...and haven't been keeping up with music, apart from what they play on a local radio station (which, most of the time, appears to be playing music from Guitar Hero games).
What should I buy? Biffy? What have I missed from 2013?

tbh not a lot, most of the best music of 2013 has come from albums that were released in 2012.
Think my top 10 of the year so far in no real order would be
1. Frightened Rabbit - The Woodpile 2. Jagwar Ma - The Throw 3. The 1975 - Chocolate 4. Biffy Clyro - Black Chandelier 5. Chvrches - The Mother We Share 6. Suede - It Starts And Ends With You 7. Imagine Dragons - It's Time (again) 8. Noah And The Whale - There Will Come a Time 9. Foals - My Number 10. Haim - Falling
Also Frank Turner,Bastille, Queens Of The Stone Age,Paramore,Primal Scream. Also from 2012 you can not go wrong with Tame Impala - Lonerism (still singles coming off that and its awesome)

Alt-J - Breezeblocks? Foals - My number Thanks for the recommendations. The Alt-J songs (at least, the first few on the album) are ok but not really my kind of tempo. I remember thinking 'Tessellate' was OK, it must have been out when I was still doing a chart. Foals - much more up my street, the plucking at times reminds me of Battles, whom I've been getting into lately. I reckon I might get that album together with a Battles album.

I'll get through it eventually Albums from 2012 could still be relevant for me to know about, I lost track with music sometime in 2012 because of stopping doing a chart and starting writing my thesis. Not heard of the artists at 2, 3, 5, 7, 10 - are they big or just "thorney" big?

Imagine not having heard of Imagine Dragons, The 1975 or Haim, you can tell you've been in Poland Frag sounds like a good name for a tribute act from thorney's list i'd second: - HAIM (one of my favourite up-and-coming bands at the moment, thanks in no small part to thorney who entered 'forever' into one of the hidden indie treasures contest ) - frightened rabbit (best song of the year so far and quite possibly the best album too) - chvrches (my favourite song by them is 'lies' but that might not be on itunes. new single 'gun' is really good as well) - the 1975 (both 'chocolate' and 'the city' are very good) - foals ('my number' is another top-5-of-the-year song, also see if you can get 'inhaler') biffy's album was OK, but to be honest i barely listen to it at the moment. 'black chandelier', 'different people', 'the joke's on us' and 'pocket' were the highlights i remember. there are also new muse ('panic station') and editors ('a ton of love') songs around at the moment - and daft punk released a new album which you may have heard about even in poland

listening to 'opposites' again now to see if i can find anything else good to say about it...
'black chandelier' is superb, but to be honest, from what i remember the other singles (with the possible exception of 'stingin' belle') were a bit bland.

I wish I had never heard of Haim, can't stand them and clearly a here today gone tomorrow band.
The 3 albums I have played the most this year have been Suede, Frankie & The Heartstrings and Miles Kane. All 3 are superb albums.
Frightened Rabbit have done one of the best singles of the year and the album isn't quite as good as that song, but still worth getting.

I have avoided hearing haim, are you jealous? Lol. To be honest I haven't heard that much of them either as XFM is the main radio station I listen to and they don't play them which is slightly surprising.

XFM is supposed to be an alternative station though, so why would it be playing AOR?

Bit harsh on Haim their early singles are beautiful and Falling is actually their worst song their debut ep us amaze and they aren't really aor are they they mix 80s like Cyndi Lauper and Fleetwoid Mac and make it sound contemporary using modern rnb rhythms also if the first song you heard by them was this you would probably live them as much as me

I never actually said there was anything wrong with being AOR, I just said it wasn't XFM's remit, like you wouldn't hear Arctic Monkeys on a jazz station or Jay-Z on a reggae one.
For the record, though, if you want to claim somebody doesn't sound AOR, maybe better not to mention Fleetwood Mac? I do agree that 'Falling' is the worst Haim song I've heard.
