Twas a very sad day when Planet Sound closed (end of 2009). Was I the only one on Haven who sent letters/texts to be posted on ITV's Ceefax Music Entertainment Section? No. I had an OMD Top 10 published in about 1990. Would you like to share that with us? They are still one of my favourite bands.

No. I had an OMD Top 10 published in about 1990. Would you like to share that with us? They are still one of my favourite bands. It would have been something like: 1. Genetic Engineering 2. The Romance Of The Telescope 3. I Betray My Friends 4. Maid Of Orleans 5. Messages 6. Stay (The Black Rose And Universal Wheel) 7. Of All The Things We've Made 8. This Is Helena 9. Distance Fades Between Us 10. She's Leaving I remember the top two for certain, and number 8 (strangely), and as my tastes haven't changed that much the others can't be far wrong. I am in the camp that Dazzle Ships was even better than Architecture & Morality...almost uniquely, it seems. Experimental OMD was indescribably fantastic, far more out there than Kraftwerk et al. It still amazes me they ever had hits. The 1981 charts look ever more charmingly bizarre given what is going on now.

Yes, I too was amazed (and delighted) when they started having hits No Enola Gay or Electricity? Genetic Engineering is a brilliant song. Even top 20 (just) was good going for a song like that.

No Enola Gay or Electricity? Genetic Engineering is a brilliant song. Even top 20 (just) was good going for a song like that. It shows how good the top 10 is that I couldn't find room for EG or E. "Genetic Engineering" had a girl in the video (Joann Kenny) who was also in the video for the similarly haunting "Drowning In Berlin" by The Mobiles a year earlier. She went on to be a bit-part player in Grange Hill, so she ended up with a top 5 herself. And a note to Depeche Modettes. They may have called an album Speak & Spell, but it took OMD to actually use one.

^ I'm surprised that there's no 'Electricity' in there either. Without a doubt it's one of the best singles by any act that failed to chart. I can remember it being released in late 1979 and immediately loved it. I finally got around to buying it a few months later when it was re-issued. It did chart in the Record Business chart though, independent releases always did better on that chart as because they had no sales returns from Woolworths they filled out the chart with a larger amount of independent and specialist shops. Its chart run on the Record Business chart was (date of entry 13/10/79) 75-59-78-79-83

Feel the love for OMD I saw them live a few times in my student days in the late 70s / early 80s. I still haven't managed to see them again since they re-formed A few years ago I worked with someone who was taught by Andy McCluskey's brother

It's OK, I've just downloaded Dazzle Ships, so it's now at number 37.

Can we try to stay on topic guys or start a new thread please Is it possible to split the thread and move the OMD posts over to the general Music forum?

English Electric is indeed a very good album. History Of Modern (the first comeback album) was also excellent.

I think I might be alone in not actually caring that much for 'Enola Gay'. the lyrics are dark but the music was just the wrong side of being too poppy for me. It sort of spoils the song.
In 1980 I bought both 'Electricity' in the April and 'Messages' in the May or June then the following year I bought 'Souvenir' in the August but as far as buying OMD singles goes that was it. I was never too keen on much of their 1980s output from 1984 onwards but they did return with a couple of good records in 1991. I own their 'Best Of' album though I tended to skip most of those mid to late 80s tracks.

Together they wrote the, ugh, Atomic Kitten oeuvre. Although I've said before that "Whole Again" given the Architecture & Morality treatment would have sounded very special.

It's the opposite for me. The fact that it sounds like a cheerful love song while being about the first nuclear bomb is what makes the song special.

Up till about 1984 OMD couldn't go wrong. But then the commercial pressures (from "Dazzle Ships" just being too stunning, too uncompromising, to sell in sufficient numbers to keep the record company happy)...led to a definite downturn in quality. A lot of mostly pretty decent pop music followed, but up until then, they'd done so much more, so much better...
I don't really care for the 1991 era stuff, "Pandora's Box" aside...
I saw Paul Humphries on tour alongside Claudia Brucken a few months ago. They were both pretty amazing...
