I was reading somewhere yesterday back in 1997 paul weller heavy soul was disqualified from number 1 it says he sold enough to be number one but then dropped to 2 anyone know why ??

The special edition package contained postcards so this was classed as free gifts, so the sales of the special edition therefore didn't count.

Specifically, there were five postcards and the rules at the time would only permit four (there were some restrictions on size too) so the record company did apparently send some work experience kid out to a load of shops to take one out of each copy (though of course that wouldn't have affected copies already sold) but it cut no ice.
Of course some minor breaches did get overlooked, but maybe EMI shopped them.
