Cliff releases his 100th album 'The Fabulous Rock 'n' Roll Songbook' on 11 November 2013. This new studio album of 15 great rock 'n' roll tracks was recorded live at the Blackbird Studio and The Parlor in Nashville, Tennessee, and is Cliff's tribute to the greats of rock 'n' roll who inspired and influenced him, such as Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly.
Track Listing
01 Rip It Up
02 Wake Up Little Susie
03 Poetry In Motion
04 Sealed With A Kiss
05 Stood Up
06 Such A Night
07 School Days
08 Teddy Bear/ Too Much
09 Don't Let Go
10 Dream Lover
11 Stuck On You
12 Fabulous
13 Rave On
14 Johnny B. Goode
15 One More Sunny Day
Originally I was pessimistic about the chances for this album as I didn't see any reason why it should sell any better than his last album Solicious which didn't do that well commercially.
However with the 100th release angle this has already generated publcity on the news on both the BBC and Channel 5.
If Radio 2 get behind this as they did with Rod Stewart I think there's a 50-50 chance this could be a "surprise" hit during the Christmas season.

It will be interesting to see whether his sound goes back to the harder-edged rock of "Move It". In which case it might get some critical acclaim as well.

From the album preview .... .... it's make Shakin' Stevens sound like Johnny Rotten. Paul McCartney's Run Devil Run with Dave Gilmour, Mick Green, Pete Wingfield, Ian Paice, Geraint Watkins this sure ain't. You know what Cliff Richard should have done for his 100th album to generate a shed load of publicity .... he should have made an album of new tracks with a bunch of Radio 1Xtra urban merchants, a bunch of EDM hipsters; with maybe a smattering of Kerrang/NME rockers. Imagine Cliff making an album with the likes of Rudimental, Naughty Boy, Disclosure, Major Lazer, 2 Chainz, Wiley, Tinie Tempah, James Murphy, Zedd, Madeon, You Me At Six Bring Me The Horizon & Biffy Clyro ..... now that would be worth listening to, wouldn't it?

Confession time. I went to see Cliff live earlier this year, when he was touring this album in Australia. The venue was the Sydney Opera House, which was one of the reasons why I succumbed to temptation.
I have to admit, he put on a very good show, and he still has a good voice. Some of the tracks he played, which are on this album, rocked far more than I'd expected. Can't say as much for the blue rinse audience. I'm sure I was the youngest person there, apart from a few 30-somethings who'd come along with their mums.

Albums released - 100 Albums I own - 0
I've reached the century!
That said, some of his really early songs are decent enough. It's only in his later years that he became increasingly bland although even songs like Wired For Sound (1981) were better than a lot of songs around at the time. Unfortunately he continued to release singles of ever decreasing quality (Millennium Prayer was abysmal) so that his 1950s /early 60s material was often overlooked.

I have a triple CD compilation by Cliff, and I'd say ~30% of the songs are first class, another 30% are take-them-or-leave-them fine, and 40% simply aren't for me.
He's had 2 strong periods:- The early years, 1958-63. Lucky Lips was the last top song from that era. The late 70s revival, 1976-82. Bookended by Miss You Nights and The Only Way Out.
Outside of those eras, there are occasional good tracks. I'm a sucker for Congratulations, and I thought his SAW hit was pretty strong. But I can't think of a single song of his from the last 20+ years that I come even close to liking.

Yeah, I kind of agree that Cliff has made some decent records but he's made so many awful ones with no sense of quality control that I can't really imagine buying even a Greatest Hits album by him, let alone a studio one. And yes it is interesting (if not unusual for a "heritage" act) that at some point in say the 1990s he gave up trying to sound contemporary. Part of the problem is that it seems so calculated.
Incidentally, I believe that total of 100 includes compilation and live albums, so it's not quite as prolific as it looks.

I own one of his albums for compilation purposes: I have this one too, but just for work purposes as personally, i cant stand him. Fair play to him though for releasing 100 albums.

Even as a Cliff fan there are some of his songs I just don't like and surprisingly one of those is Mistletoe & Wine.
We Don't Talk Anymore is just a classic pop song.
My favourite is Ocean Deep released as the B side t Baby You're Dynamite - by the time they realised their mistake and flipped the record it was too late - the record had dropped down the charts and the momentum was lost.
This album has a 50-50 chance of doing well with help from Radio 2 but I doubt any single from it would. I really can't see Cliff ever having another chart single while he is alive.

Found the studio version of 'Ocean Deep' on my usual streaming site of choice... which led me to his album of original songs 31st Of February Street: www.deezer.com/en/album/300361
