Some rather sad news - Ellise May Pauling died last week, aged 82.
Mrs Pauling's husband Lowell was a musician, who toured with many of the great rock & rollers of the fifties, as a member of The Five Royales.
One night, Lowell was feeling particularly lonely, separated from his wife, and so he jotted down a few of his deepest feelings.
And came up with a song with which The Five Royales had a minor US hit.
To be honest, I think this is one of those where covers are better than the originals. The Shirelles and The Mamas And Papas discovered depths in the song that the smaller King label could not plumb with the more primitive technology.
But a rather sweet version came out in 1965, by Reparata & The Delrons:
From an album with the almost archetypal girl group title - Whenever A Teenager Cries.
RIP Ellise.
Incidentally, she never got the royalties due to her husband...
