Never really got the hate for Nickelback or U2, it's like people hate them just because it's cool to hate them. Strange how a band like U2 could go from being the biggest and respected band in the world to the most hated. They were unstoppable at one time!

Wouldn't go that far but bono is annoying and their music is now sh*t. But nickleback were never good, they have 2 songs which are listenable and sold in decent numbers. They got big by accident a good few albums into their career off one hit. U2 atleast made 2 or 3 huge albums

personally i find it bizarre to state that U2 are 'the new nickelback' when U2 have a pretty impressive history behind them (including some real classics, although they haven't released a good song since 'beautiful day' IMO), whereas nickelback became huge off the back of 'rockstar', the success of which was mystifying at the time.
oh and the lead singer's married to avril lavigne, which is probably reason enough to make anyone unpopular
*edited to correct the fact that i basically read the question the wrong way around... i've been doing rather a lot of that lately *

my hate for Nickelback is mostly cos of the bad bad lyrics (I wanna be a rockstar/I want a credit card lalala) and the fake-rock attitude think I hated the guy before he married poor Avril Lavigne so that's not my reason for hating him

It's just nonsense Nickelback are an average rock band that have had a couple of huge hits and only been around 16 years or so and one great song 'How you remind me' I still really like whereas U2 have been going over 30 years and have only become irrelevant in the last ten , how many bands get a career like that.
Rolling Stones went through the same thing in the 90s and they are cool again and it could happen to U2 as well.

I think U2 try a bit too "try hard", Bono and his world peace mission, the guitarist calling himself "the edge", this new album free on the hip/cool iTunes.

on the other hand, this question has made me wonder who 'the new nickelback' are if not U2. who else plodded along, then produced a whopper of a hit which everyone despised?

kings of leon won't be far off, they are certainly plodding along since "sex on fire", 3 albums went under the radar before "only by the night" and two since, their last 9 singles failed to trouble the top 30 and rightly so, in fact only 1 of their last 4 singles even troubled the top 100! (153, 98, 174 and the last one didn't chart) whilst the casual fan like the song sex on fire there are a lot of fans of their early work who hate it with a passion.
I'm sure someone liked "rockstar" it spent 9 month in the UK charts so someone was buying it!!

The Beatles are the new 5 Seconds Of Summer.
Why ?
I haven't a clue. It's a stupid thing to say, but I'm a nonentity attention seeking with a stupid blog, and this will get everyone talking about me.
Regardless of whether or not you like U2 and/or Nickelback, it is one of the most pointless discussions to have been started at Haven for at least 24 hours.

Disagree.
They are the new Rolling Stones = brilliant for the first decade, pretty good for the next decade, then became a money grabbing tax avoiding parody of their former selves there after bar the odd semi recovery. Or comparable with Madonna who has similarly released easily her worst two studio albums in her last two releases.
As for Nickleback, I'm reminded of the late period Family Guy episode where Peter has a flashback to show when he borrowed/stole Doctor Who's Tardis and took Kurt Cobain forward to a decade in the future where he saw Chad Kroeger's band ... and cue the final image of dropping a horrified and depressed Nirvana front man back to his house in 1994 alone and looking at his shotgun.

^ you trying to insult me? Thanks moron you know you can skip threads if you dont like them No, I wasn't insulting you. I was writing about the original link, hence the very clear reference to an attention seeking nonentity with a stupid blog, as pointed out by greendemon. (Thank you). However, you, borneoman, were very clearly referring to me, when you said "Thanks moron".

I'm not keen on U2, but I doubt they will ever, ever, ever come even close to plumbing the abyssal, godawful, cacodaemonic anti-music of Nickelback.

What a daft thing to say, U2 have been around a lot longer, not that I like U2, Bono has a God complex and is a tw*t. It's like saying is Madonna is the new Lady Gaga!

Nickelback I have absolutely no time for, but I've given the new U2 album a listen, and don't totally hate it. I guess you have to at least respect U2 for those days (before I was born) when they were pretty incredible. Nickelback have never been anywhere near decent.
