Belgium's Christian Benteke scored after 7 seconds against Gibraltar - the fastest ever World Cup qualifying goal, beating the 8.3 seconds by San Marino's Davide Gualtieri against England in 1993. I had completely forgotten about that. I've just Googled the England team that conceded that goal:- David Seaman Lee Dixon Gary Pallister Des Walker Stuart Pearce Paul Ince David Platt Stuart Ripley Andy Sinton Ian Wright Les Ferdinand Not a bad team - I'd say Pallister, Ripley and Sinton were the weak links. Managed to finish behind Norway and the Netherlands in the qualifying group, and therefore didn't make it to the USA. Sometimes, it is better not to dwell on the "good old days", and just sit back and enjoy the present day footballing calamities.

Ripley was a good player but injuries prevented him from being a really great player. He went off injured in this game if I remember rightly and only won one more cap, four years later. Pallister was good enough but never got a proper run in the England team at a time when there was a lot of competition. Steve Bruce never even won a cap (though Keith Curle did, which shows how p*ss poor Graham Taylor was). It's worth remembering the underhit backpass from which San Marino scored came from Stuart Pearce...
