Pot 1 has six European teams and two South American teams ~ England could draw any one of them. Yes, but Pot 2 contains Colombia, Uruguay and Peru, none of whom can be drawn with Argentina or Brazil. So that leaves 4 European nations plus Mexico in Pot 2 as the only possible opponents of Argentina or Brazil. Hence, a 2 in 5 (40%) chance of England getting Argentina or Brazil. And just a 10% chance of getting Poland.

Pot 1 has six European teams and two South American teams ~ England could draw any one of them. I would like: Poland, England, Iran & Panama. We'll probably get something like: Brazil or Argentina, England, Denmark or Sweden, Nigeria. We managed ok in 2002 with Argentina, England, Sweden, Nigeria.. We then beat Denmark and lost to Brazil.. so all those teams in that list is who we played that world cup.

My England group of death would be:- England, Germany, Iceland, Nigeria. Not sure if three European teams in one group is allowed?
But yes, we need to avoid Germany. I think if we played Iceland again, we would beat them. Nigeria are the team to avoid from Pot 4.

Former PSV and Schalke forward Jefferson Farfan was on the scoresheet as Peru claimed the 32nd and last spot in next year's finals. It will be their first appearance since 1982 - the longest wait for any of next year's qualifiers.

So looking at that, we could seriously have a group consisting of Poland, Peru, Iran and Saudi Arabia, and two would go through? I think I'm right in saying Iran and Saudi Arabia can't be drawn in the same group, as no two countries from the same federation can be in the same group (excluding UEFA, of course, as with so many qualifiers there will be two European countries in some groups).
Peru are the final qualifiers, having beaten New Zealand 2-0 on aggregate.
Haven't they dropped that rule for this tournament? In the past, Iran and Saudi Arabia would have been in the same pot, but now the pots (apart from the hosts) are determined purely by FIFA ranking.

So, despite England boycotting the first 3 World Cups, and supposedly being rubbish for the past 50 years, we rank 5th equal in World Cup Finals appearances amongst 2018's participants (behind Brazil, Germany, Argentina and Mexico). Our streak of 6 consecutive finals is only bettered by those 4 nations, plus Spain and South Korea.

According to the BBC: "No teams from the same confederation, with the exception of Uefa, will be drawn in the same group. A maximum of two European countries can be in any group." www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/41962101

And just a 10% chance of getting Poland. It depends somewhat on the draw procedure. For example, if they draw pot 1, then 2, and so on, and put each team in the first possible group, then each pot 2 team has a 12.5% chance of playing Russia (since the first drawn team from pot 2 will go to group A).
