It's all change at the top this week as Heaven 17 are shunted down to number nine after being at number one for three weeks! Yazoo capitalise on the situation by rising three places to the top spot! The Human League stay solid at two, they seem to be feeling that position! Meanwhile The Police make a strong debut at three taking deep breaths, I'm sure they be in contention for the top spot next week. Mike Oldfield continues casting shadows and rises to number four this week!

Thanks this week to Andy, Thorney, raliverpool, rubcale, Kingpin, smokeyb, Earl Purple, Shireblogger, Milliways, Mark, coolchristie2 and me, alexrange was missing in action this week which probably explains a couple of the sharper drops like Bonnie Tyler for example. I was quite surprised by how much Heaven 17 dropped this week though! We can now begin posting for the WB: 29/05/1983

Elton John gets to #1 in a chart that also has both Rod Stewart and David Bowie getting new entries. The 3 main solo male vocalists from the 1970s all still going well in the 1980s. David Bowie's song is the 2nd single from the album "Let's Dance" but the song dates back to about 1977 when he co-wrote it with Iggy Pop and the latter recorded it first. This the second occasion of two co-writers of the song charting with it separately in a few weeks, "Our Lips Are Sealed" just dropping out this week, co-written by Terry Hall of the Fun Boy Three and Jane Wiedlin of the Go-Gos.
Scottish band Big Country are also back with another song that sounds not that dis-similar to their last one.

I'm going to point this week's spotlight on Yello, who released a brace of inventive singles from the "You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess" album. Championed by Radio Luxemburg, "I Love You" will get higher than the #90 position it occupied this week, whilst "Lost Again" will make a very brief Top 75 appearance. It would be another 5 years before "The Race" finally rewarded them with a Top 40 hit in Britain.

It was this week in 1983 that the late Keith Harris (with Orville & Cuddles) made their solitary appearance in the UK album chart, at #92.

I'd heard of Yello around 1983 and even recognised Dieter Meier but it wasn't until 1988 that they got in my chart and it wasn't "The Race" but "Of Course I'm Lying" that got them to #1 in my chart.

Had a peak at next weeks chart it looks poor for new entries lots of faceless disco, soul and wine bar music only 3 great songs. Will listen to them all but I don't have high hopes.

There was a summer slump in 1983, definitely. And there was in sales, too, if you recall Gezza's topic. Number ones were not selling more than 70K a week and sometimes less.
