I was just thinking I've never ever purchased a soundtrack album in my life who here buys them for some reason I've never really fancied buying them myself.

I'm the same, I'd much rather watch the TV show/film that the songs came from than just listen to the soundtrack.

I saw a soundtrack I took a liking to today which got me thinking I've never bothered buying soundtracks.

No movie soundtracks that I can think of but I have at least three cast recordings of stage musicals.

Very few. Mostly single artist soundtracks - Prince's "Purple Rain", Eurythmics "1984", Beatles "A Hard Day's Night", for example. Plus the Various Artists soundtrack to "Trainspotting".

Oh yes, I've got the Trainspotting soundtrack as well. I've also got the Beatles ones as part of the boxed set of albums.

I love soundtracks.
First one i ever ever bought was Grease.
I know i have all the James Bond soundtracks from all the films even the non bond films and i have all the obvious musical soundtracks from the day like South Pacific, West Side Story, Wizard Of Oz, Blues Brothers, Grease, Grease 2, Saturday Night Fever, Stayin Alive, Rocky, Rocky 2, Rocky 3, Rocky 4, The Young Ones, Summer Holiday, The Lost Boys, Fright Night, My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins, Billy Elliot, i could go on and on.
Basically i just love a good soundtrack. Now heres the weird part. I dont necessary watch the film first before i buy them. I tend to see with the vocal ones who the artists on them are.
Have some soundtracks that are now long deleted like the 8 Halloween soundtracks.
Tend to buy them if they are really cheap if i know its just musisc on them like the Lord Of The Rings soundtracks or Harry Potter.

I think soundtracks were more high profile in the past and gave you a real opportunity to discover new artists or hidden gems that you wouldn't usually have the time for.
From memory I have Lost Boys, Vanilla Sky, Trainspotting, the Saint, Blues Brothers, Hackers, Top Gun

I remember Mark Kermode pointing out in his series that when he was a kid in the 1970s and early 1980s, if you liked a film the only way to relive that experience at home was with a soundtrack album.

I have a few ones, some old like Out of Africa, The Piano, those were amazing soundtracks. The latter was scored by Michael Nyman and was everywhere at the time.
I also bought a few soundtracks cos they had Tori Amos songs, like Great Expectations, Mona Lisa Smile and even Mission:Impossible 2
I remember also buying the City of Angels soundtrack cos it had Alanis Morissette´s Uninvited (+ Sarah Mclachlan´s Angel and Goo Goo Dolls Iris)... wasn´t it #1 in the US???
recently there was this soundtrack I loved for this little Irish movie called Once, best musical movie ever and best sound soundtrack ever.

I have a handful: the first 2 Lord of the Rings movies, the Drive soundtrack and probably one or two others I've forgotten. Generally it's classical soundtracks, especially to fantasy/historical films, but the Drive soundtrack is excellent.
There are a few I've considered getting in the past - never quite can be bothered though. I do kind of want the Skyrim soundtrack...
