May the 4th be with you. Ok, Star Wars is 14 years away still, but you never know with time travel....
As the Beatles remain at #1 with the Shirelles now celebrating definitely their 2nd biggest hit behind them, we have new entries by Sam Cooke and then Billy J Kramer doing a Lennon-McCartney composition, so the Beatles are already writing hits for other artists too.
Petula Clark is singing in a foreign language. The flip-side "Chariot", pronounced chario-oh and also sung in a foreign language (I think French) is the same song as "I Will Follow Him", currently at #5 on its way down from a #2 peak.
Notably among those not charting is Al Martino doing "I Love You Because". Regardless of the fact that it didn't chart, Jim Reeves will not be considered for charting that in 1964 (the year he crashed his plane) but he does have a song on the next playlist.

In the UK the Beatles had two #1s that stayed on top for 7 weeks (and none for longer) and "From Me To You" was one of them. The other was "Hello Goodbye" - probably an answer that would catch many out as that isn't really considered their classic. "She Loves You" managed 6 weeks in two runs and "Get Back" also stayed on top for 6 weeks.
On this chart "From Me To You" has managed 4 so far, but is under serious threat from Phil Spector's Crystals who get a high entry.
The second entry is a song that doesn't really achieve its potential with this version. To put it bluntly, it is sung with no emotion whatsoever that relates to the lyrics. Fortunately someone saw the potential 18 years later.

As well as the Beatles being among the great musicians of the early 1960s we also have Phil Spector, with his famous "wall of sound". In the USA the Crystals' biggest hit was "He's A Rebel" which peaked at #1. That song peaked at #4 in this chart in October 1962.
Two high new entries this week. Bobby Rydell got to #1 in this chart in 1960 with "Wild One", and now is seeking one near the end of his chart career. "Forget Him" was actually written by British songwriter Tony Hatch, who was best known previously perhaps for "Look For A Star" which might have been a bigger hit in the USA had there not been two rival versions by Garry Mills and Garry Miles (just to confuse everyone more, the latter was really James "Buzz" Cason). In the USA, "Forget Him" would be his final hit and his joint 2nd biggest ever but not for a few more months. He has a different one out there which may or may not appear in the chart next week.
Also entering high is a very high energy pop song by Nat King Cole, which, when I heard, I felt had a "Eurovision" buzz to it. In particular I think there are similarities between this song and "Congratulations". Had the USA entered Eurovision, this song would have been a major contender... (I am now going to google to see if the likeness between these two songs has been noticed already. I usually find that in these cases it has...).
There have been various versions of Sukiyaki but I earlier "rejected" an instrumental version by Kenny Ball in favour of waiting for the original Japanese version by Kyu Sakamoto, which topped the US chart.
Etta James gets in this chart with one of her few hits to get into the US top 30, with many others peaking between 30 and 40. "Trust In Me" scraped into US #30 on 22 April 1961 but failed to reach this chart.
James Brown doesn't get in this time but watch out for him, I'm sure he'll have some big hits later on...

The Crystals remain at #1 a second week under pressure from last week's high entries and a new one from Gerry & The Pacemakers.
Another famous 60s band makes their debut this week - the Hollies started off doing cover versions then started writing their own songs (and then finished off doing covers again). This song was recorded by the Coasters previously and has a few nursery rhyme lyrics in it.

Interesting how "Forget Him" was Bobby Rydell's last hit in both the UK and the USA but ends up not being his last hit on this chart, due to the fact that in the UK it entered the top 50 before Wildwood Days entered the US top 30, and then Forget Him was a hit later on in the USA.
In any case it gets him his 2nd NM retro #1, with Wild One being his first, and we know that as he hits #1 and also gets the highest entry, his career here is nearly over and these will be his last two hits.
Further down we have another Shadows hit. This is lesser known than some of their others but did peak at #2 in the UK. Buddy Holly's version of the classic "Bo Diddley" was another UK top 10 hit for him posthumously and enters a few places higher than his former backing group who also get a new entry this week.

Up until this point the artists who have had more than one NM #1 are:
Elvis Presley (6) Everly Brothers (3) Cliff Richard (3) Sam Cooke (2) Neil Sedaka (2) Bobby Rydell (2)
Roy Orbison has had one #1 and I think four #2s The Beatles have had one #1 and two #2s so far and so have Bobby Darin and Ray Charles.

-- ( -- ) Rondo - Kenny Ball & His Jazzmen -- ( -- ) Indian Love Call - Karl Denver
Bobby Rydell remains at #1 with one of his hits but only climbs from #8 to #6 with the other so his quest to have both the top 2 looks in jeopardy.
The highest entry by the Chiffons is a song written by Carole King & Gerry Goffin and later recorded by Carole King herself. It was a US hit for her in 1980, a year I was closely following the US chart so I very much remember her version.
I mentioned the Jim Reeves will lose out on "I Love You Because" because of Perry Como's version, and previously his only chart entry was "He'll Have To Go" but now he gets a second hit.
The Everly Brothers song is one of those "hard to find" and not on Spotify for some reason even though they have loads of songs on there.
Among those not charting is Kenny Ball's rendition of "Rondo Alla Turca", a piece I am very familiar with as I used to play it. Whilst I quite like the jazzy style of it, I just decided it wasn't "original" enough. And he didn't do the F# minor part...

A 3rd week for Bobby Rydell with the biggest challenge now coming most likely from Jan & Dean with a song co-written by Jan (Berry) and Brian Wilson who also performs uncredited on the track. (So 2 hits this year about surfing written by Brian Wilson with help from someone called Berry).
Another new arrival from the British beat groups with the Swingin' Blue Jeans.
Then we have America's very own Essex girls with a song that got to #1 for them over there and only just scraped into the chart here.

A 4th week at #1 means that "Forget Him" has stayed longer at #1 than "Wild One" which was 3 weeks on top in 1960. That song was knocked off the top by Max Bygraves.. how times have changed.
Looking down at the new entries, the most notable name is Marvin Gaye. His UK career had a stuttered start, with a #50 hit duet with Mary Wells and #49 and #50 solo hits, and until Paul Heaton was the only singer I think to feature on two singles that peaked in the bottom position of the UK chart.
The other notable name is the Tymes who had a UK #1 early in 1975 but topped the US chart with the song they enter with here.

As usual, having reached the mid-point of the year, I run through some sporting winners of 1963.
Football:
For England, Merseyside seemed to be the happening place. However it wasn't quite Mr Shankly and his bunch this year but the other side - get out the Z-Cars theme, it is those Toffeemen Everton who took the league title in 1962-63 with a total of 61 points, 6 clear of their next rivals Tottenham.
Tottenham Hotspur did succeed however in the European Cup-Winners Cup, the first English club to win a European trophy.
They did however surrender their FA Cup, going out in the 3rd round at home to Burnley and the eventual winners would be Matt Busby's Manchester United, who we obviously feel might have won more over the previous 5 years had it not been for the Munich Air Crash. (Note that the FA Cup in 1981, 82 and 83 had the same winners as in 61, 62, 63 )
The League Cup final was still a 2-legged affair and was a hotly contested derby with Birmingham City winning 3-1 on aggregate against Aston Villa.
In Scotland, Rangers ran out easy winners in the league, 57 points from 34 games with Kilmarnock in 2nd place and Celtic down in 4th. Rangers also won the Scottish Cup beating Celtic in the final while Heart of Midlothian won the league cup final being Kilmarnock in the final.
Tennis:
Chuck McKinley was successful at the Wimbledon Men's singles and Margaret Court won the women's singles. Fred Stolle and Billie Jean King the runners up, both beaten in straight sets.
American Football:
The Chicago Bears were NFL champions, beating the New York Giants whilst the winners of the AFL were San Diego Chargers beating the Boston Patriots (who later became the New England Patriots). This is the days before the Super-Bowl. (I think in previous years I only listed NFL winners).
Baseball:
Although the New York Yankees had won it the previous 2 seasons, in 1963 they were swept aside by the Los Angeles Dodgers who won all 4 games.

Back to the charts now:
6 July 1963:
1 ( 1 ) Forget Him - Bobby Rydell < 5th week at #1 > 2 ( 2 ) Surf City - Jan & Dean 3 ( 3 ) On Fine Day - Chiffons 4 ( -- ) Ring Of Fire - Johnny Cash 5 ( -- ) Wipe Out - Surfaris 6 ( 7 ) It's Too Late Now - Swinging Blue Jeans 7 ( 9 ) Easier Said Than Done - Essex 8 ( -- ) Devil In Disguise - Elvis Presley 9 ( 5 ) Wildwood Days - Bobby Rydell (#4) 10 ( 4 ) I Like It - Gerry & The Pacemakers (#2[2])
11 ( 15 ) Nature's Time For Love - Joe Brown 12 ( 8 ) Welcome To My World - Jim Reeves (#8) 13 ( 6 ) Sukiyaki - Kyu Sakamoto (#3) 14 ( -- ) Just One Look - Doris Troy 15 ( 19 ) So Much In Love - Tymes 16 ( 16 ) Hey Mama - Frankie Vaughan 17 ( 10 ) Atlantis - Shadows (#9) 18 ( -- ) Not Me - Orlons 19 ( 14 ) If My Pillow Could Talk - Connie Francis (#14) 20 ( 20 ) My Summer Love - Ruby And The Romantics
21 ( 13 ) Bo Diddley - Buddy Holly (#11) 22 ( 12 ) He's The One - Billie Davis (#7) 23 ( 18 ) It's Been Nice - Everly Brothers (#18) 24 ( 11 ) Those Lazy Hazy Crazy Days Of Summer - Nat King Cole (#3) 25 ( 26 ) Confessin' - Frank Ifield 26 ( 29 ) Pride And Joy - Marvin Gaye 27 ( 17 ) Let's Go Steady Again - Neil Sedaka (#9) 28 ( -- ) Fingertips Pt 2 - Little Stevie Wonder 29 ( 23 ) Shut Down - Beach Boys (#23) 30 ( 24 ) String Along - Rick Nelson (#24)
-- ( 21 ) Don't Try To Change Me - Crickets (#18) -- ( 22 ) Ice Cream Man - Tornados (#16) -- ( 25 ) Da Doo Ron Ron - Crystals (#1[2]) -- ( 27 ) It's My Party - Lesley Gore (#6) -- ( 28 ) Just Like Me - Hollies (#14) -- ( 30 ) Falling - Roy Orbison (#19)
-- ( -- ) Harry The Hairy Ape - Ray Stevens -- ( -- ) Faraway Places - Bachelors
Bobby Rydell holds on for perhaps a surprising 5th week at #1 but really it's perhaps more the lack of strength of the challengers. However this week gives us some classic new entries, and another major artist making his debut.
There is also a connection between the #2 and the second highest entry, not just the word "surf" but the fact that Brian Wilson co-wrote and performed on "Surf City" and later recorded a version of "Wipe Out" with the Fat Boys.
Ring Of Fire was co-written by Johnny Cash's future wife. His debut position here of #4 is the same position where his cover of "Hurt" peaked 40 years later.
Further down we have a debut for "Little" Stevie Wonder, with a live song, the first live recording to reach #1 in the Billboard Hot 100. Doris Troy's entry was covered the following year by the Hollies. As you can guess, they won't be charting with this one now...
It is interesting to compare Elvis Presley's performances now with how he did in my chart in 2005 with all his UK #1s. "Devil In Disguise" was one of the bigger hits, peaking at #6. Whilst one of his biggest hits on the retro chart, "Return To Sender" could only manage #29 in 2005.

The Dakotas were Billy J Kramer's backing group. This track is an instrumental.
Detroit City was later covered by Tom Jones.

A second week at #1 for Johnny Cash but he's seriously under threat. Peter Paul & Mary have already had a #1 this year with "Puff The Magic Dragon" a song Peter wrote. This song wasn't written by any members of the band but another folk singer whose real name is Robert Zimmerman but is recording under the name of Bob Dylan. He's released an album called "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" containing almost all songs he wrote himself (whereas his first album was almost all cover-versions) and this song is one of the tracks on it. Peter Paul & Mary were impressed enough to record their own version.

We have a 2nd week on top for Peter Paul & Mary's cover of Bob Dylan, the second biggest UK hit for Johnny Kidd & The Pirates climbing to #2 with "Shakin' All Over" having topped this chart for 5 weeks 3 years earlier. During this last week Lemmy of Motorhead died and of course they covered Johnny Kidd's "Please Don't Touch".
The highest entry is a song that was a UK #1 and composed by Lennon and McCartney, as was Billy J Kramer's previous hit with the backing group still in the chart on their own having had a top 10 hit.

As the folk song written by one of the greatest lyricists ever holds on to #1, it is threatened by the king of parody with the second hit within a year to use Ponchielli's "Dance Of The Hours" as its base. This tale about a boy at summer camp his most famous song and was his only hit single so he's considered a one-hit wonder but I happened to grow up listening to several of his albums. Songs like "Let's All Call Up AT&T And Protest To The President March", for example... The link to that song is here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHTazxaQ9bsIn the hit here he mentions a number of names and bad things that have happened to them. One of his characters is called Leonard Skinner, and it is known that the band Lynyrd Skynyrd named themselves after a teacher of that name who said they'd amount to nothing. It's doubtful though that that is anything more than a coincidence. Just Like Eddie was a tribute to Eddie Cochran, a song produced by Joe Meek. The Caravelles hit went top 10 in both the UK and USA. Not an original song, Ernest Tubb recorded it in 1950, but they were a British female duo and got to #3 in the USA (and #6 in the UK) however they didn't have any more hits. Freddie & The Dreamers' first UK hit "If you've gotta make a fool of somebody" was not considered for this chart as James Ray had done it in January 1962. Now they do a new song that does get them into the chart and was their biggest UK hit, peaking at #2.

17 August 1963:
1 ( 5 ) Hello Mudduh Hello Fadduh - Allan Sherman < 1st week at #1 > 2 ( 1 ) Blowin' In The Wind - Peter Paul & Mary (#1[3]) 3 ( 3 ) Bad To Me - Billy J Kramer & The Dakotas 4 ( 2 ) I'll Never Get Over You - Johnny Kidd & the Pirates (#2[2]) 5 ( 4 ) Denise - Randy & The Rainbows (#4) 6 ( 11 ) Just Like Eddie - Heinz 7 ( 12 ) You Don't Have To Be A Baby To Cry - Caravelles 8 ( 7 ) In Summer - Billy Fury (#7) 9 ( 17 ) I'm Telling You Now - Freddie & The Dreamers 10 ( 6 ) Ring Of Fire - Johnny Cash (#1[2])

21 ( 28 ) Danke Schoen - Wayne Newton 22 ( 30 ) Blue Girl - Bruisers 23 ( 19 ) Mister Porter - Mickie Most (#17) 24 ( 27 ) Christine - Miss X 25 ( -- ) Be My Girl - Dennisons 26 ( 25 ) Come On - Rolling Stones (#23) 27 ( 21 ) The Cruel Sea - Dakotas (#9) 28 ( 23 ) Candy Girl - Four Seasons (#15) 29 ( 20 ) Devil In Disguise - Elvis Presley (#4) 30 ( -- ) Surfer Girl - Beach Boys

-- ( -- ) After You've Gone - Alice Babs -- ( -- ) Hey Girl - Freddie Scott
So yeah Allan Sherman's one hit does get to #1 (Unless by the time of Crazy Downtown I allow in US top 40 hits and also choose to chart, the latter of which I probably won't even if I do the former). Note that Maureen Evans got to #2 at the end of last year with "Like I Do" so a really good 9 months or so for that Ponchielli tune.
That it makes it is also helped by the chart not being overly strong at the moment. If "Bad To Me" didn't get to #1, maybe there's another Lennon-McCartney song just around the corner that will?
The Angels got to #1 in the USA but only scraped #50 here being a least successful chart act and therefore even less successful than The Essex who at least made it to UK #41 with their hit. (The latter of those groups had one of their songs covered for a top 10 UK hit in 1974. More to come on that one.. But my latest playlist features 2 songs covered that year and I didn't know until now that both of those were covers. As I decided that I'm allowing 7 years before a song can be recycled again, unless the new version is totally different AND an improvement, in which it can immediately, by 1974 they'll both be eligible).
Major Lance gets an entry and will probably also beat Wayne Fontana next year with the ums.

No change at #1 for Allan Sherman and the new entries include an uptempo song from Martha & The Vandellas, a soulful ballad by Ben E King that will deny Shirley Bassey getting in with this song, a duet with the married couple of Steve & Eydie, a song for which there was also another version floating around, and a song that would be a UK #2 hit 27 years later.
I decided that the time for reviving hits would go back even before my chart era, which is why Cliff Richard is kept out in the cold because this is less than 5 years since the Tommy Edwards version which reached #1 in the UK and USA and is a far superior version of the song. That was actually a re-recording by Tommy Edwards and the melody came from the 1920s but lyrics were added around 1951.

-- ( -- ) Whispering - Bachelors
Two big entries this week, with the Beatles dislodging Allan Sherman, and the Crystals classic which actually finished 2nd ranked in the playlist, below the Beatles but above Allan Sherman, however it's unlikely to reach #1. Their last hit "Da Doo Ron Ron" did make it to #1 and knocked the Beatles off the top to get there.
In the UK chart, "She Loves You" had two runs at #1 totalling 6 weeks, and also spent 6 weeks at #2 and 6 weeks at #3, in a long chart run that takes it all the way to the end of the year and beyond. I do not foresee that happening on this chart, however it has given them their second #1.
I have noted that Peter Paul & Mary drop out of the top 10 from #3, and that a number of last week's climbers in their 2nd chart week have already gone down, and that last weeks entries haven't made significant climbs. The scores of the top 11 were all quite tightly packed.
Note: In the USA the Beatles had hits with B-sides charting separately, and had hits that were not UK hits, so we'll be getting flooded with their songs soon. They got to #2 in the USA in 1964 with "Do You Want To Know A Secret" which of course they wrote but has already been a hit on this chart for Billy J Kramer. That song had "Thank You Girl" as its B-side but that song didn't reach the top 30. "Yesterday" was a US #1 in 1965 so will be eligible to chart here too.
