Six new entries in this week's Retro Rewind chart from:
- The Newcastle upon Tyne progressive folk rock group Fog On The Tyne album cut written by the group's leader Rod Clements reached UK #5.
- The Italian producer responsible for the music to the original 1971 Michael Holm recording, recovers his own track to score a moderate sized European hit, which also reached USA #46, and the top 50 in Australia.
- The self written and produced melancholic introspective UK #3 & USA #1 (AC #1) & Ireland #2 track by the English-Irish singer-songwriter is arguably his signature tune.
- The Canadian singer/songwriter/guitarist's country flavoured ballad title track of his USA, UK & Australian #1 album.
- After their frustrated lead singer Allan Clarke left the group in December 1971, the Manchester beat group appointed Swedish singer Mikael Rickfors. The first result was this different sounding UK #26 dramatic pop hit.
- Paul McCartney's response to the events of Bloody Sunday in Northern Ireland on 30 January 1972 was the first recorded song by the band to include Irish guitarist Henry McCullough. It was completely banned from media exposure in the United Kingdom, being banned by the BBC, Radio Luxembourg and the Independent Television Authority. On the BBC Radio 1 chart show Pick of the Pops, Alan Freeman had to refer to it as "a record by the group Wings". It made UK #16 & USA #21, but faired better in Europe going top ten in most territories including #1 in Ireland & Spain.

One of those oddities that "Son Of My Father" caught on at football grounds more than probably any other pop song of the 1970s. Until the PSB cover of "Go West" at least.
Definitely a better album than single chart in this particular era...

One of those oddities that "Son Of My Father" caught on at football grounds more than probably any other pop song of the 1970s. Until the PSB cover of "Go West" at least. Nowadays I hear it a lot watching the PDC darts "Oh Gary, Gary. Gary, Gary, Gary, Gary Anderson...."

I didnt know Giorgio Moroder did Son Of My Father. I thought only Chicory Tip did. Only just found this thread. I was only 4 and half when the above chart you have posted. Giorgio's version was actually the third version: But considering he produced and co-wrote the original first version from 1971 with German singer and lyricist Michael Holm: Then he was fully entitled to capitalise and "recover" his own song using the UK version global hit version lyrics. PS. I have my 1960s Retro Chart thread here: fatherandy2.proboards.com/thread/84300/retro-tracks-rewind-charts-1960 if you want to have a look

Seven new entries this week come from:
- The sleazy blues rock boogie-woogie Jagger/Richards penned USA #7 & UK #5 tale of a gambler who cannot remain faithful to any woman, which was the lead singer preceding the Exile On Main Street double album.
- The Al Bell written and produced gospel soul USA #1 (R&B #1) & UK #20 hit for the Stax records act. This track was sampled in Salt'N'Pepa's 1991 hit "Let's Talk About Sex".
- The lead single of the forthcoming Honky Château album, was a much bigger international hit peaking at UK #2 & USA #6. According to Bernie Taupin its lyrics were written as an analogy comparing getting stoned to going into outer space (Hence this infamous literal performance of the song www.youtube.com/watch?v=lul-Y8vSr0I). Although at the time critics including David Bowie climbed it was inspired by his earlier Space Oddity single, his Life On Mars (Hunky Dory) album track, and his forthcoming single "Starman". Still as he once said "Copycats borrow, geniuses steal..." (cough Ashes To Ashes cough).
- The USA #42 third and final single from the San Francisco psychedelic soul group's There's A Riot Goin' On alnum was an ode to getting stoned. Hence, it did not receive much radio airplay.
- Ray Dorsett's UK #21 rocker for the British good-time blues and jug band. In retrospect I can't help but think Chinn & Chapman were inspired by this song to compose one of Suzi Quatro's biggest hits ...
- The Canadian hard rock band's breakout USA #32 & Canada #2 hit was taken from their second album On Record, but was a cover of a Hot Chocolate song.
- The New York folk rock singer songwriter's storytelling USA #23 & Canada #3 breakthrough hit released on Elektra records.
