Eleven new entries in this week's Retro Rewind chart from:
- The best-selling single of the former Beatles solo career and title track of his second studio album, its lyrics encourage the listener to imagine a world at peace without the barriers of borders or the divisions of religion and nationality. It's initial 1971-2 run saw it remain unreleased in the UK (where it topped the charts in 1981 after his murder), but hit USA #3, #1 in Australia, Canada, South Africa, Italy ... and top ten more or less everywhere else. It is easier to name who has not covered this song, although only this year his widow Yoko Ono rated Lady Gaga's 2015 version the best and Madonna's 2004 version the worst..)
- The pseudonym for the London born musician Phil Cordell, this instrumental progressive rock track peaked at UK #5, Switzerland #1, and went top three in Germany & the Netherlands.
- This country pop rock track from the UK & USA #1 album Imagine was deliberately done in the musical vein of Paul McCartney's homespun Ram album, it contains bleak lyrical content personally attacking his former songwriting partner.
- Written by Noddy Holder and Jim Lea and produced by Chas Chandler this West Midlands Glam Rock group's second hit single peaked at UK #1 & Ireland #1, Australia #9, and top ten in several other European countries.
- This Tapestry album "recover" of the 1960 Shirelles smash hit was in a considerably slower tempo and with a more contemplative, melancholy feel than in the original recording. It features Joni Mitchell & James Taylor on backing vocals.
- Written and co-produced by Roy Wood, this UK #23 was taken from their 4th & final album Message from the Country.
- This USA #53 & UK #33 was the last hit for the Motown girl group before they disbanded in 1972. It was written and produced by Berry Gordy, Freddie Perren, Alphonzo Mizell and Deke Richards.
- The American female girl rock band reached USA #40 with the title track of their second album. They had a changeable female line up but their key members were sisters Jean & June Millington.
- Long before Whitney Houston, this Woodstock guitar instrumental performance released as a posthumous USA #78 (double A-side with "Dolly Dagger") single is surely the definitive version of the United States of America national anthem.
- This 1950s style rock shuffle track from Ram was released as a single across Europe. It's most successful peak was Netherlands #7.
- The non single title track of the Newcastle upon Tyne folk rock group's second album produced by Bob Johnston was never released as a single ... until it was rerecorded in 1990 with a certain mad as a box of frogs Geordie footballer.

As of 2016 this song featured in a memorable scene in the John Cusack & Kate Beckinsale film Serendipity; and regularly receives airplay on Radio 2 & Radio 6 Music.
Eight new entries appear this week from:
- Originally written by Pete Townshend for his aborted Lifehouse project, this Who's Next gritty rock ballad album track released as a single hitting USA #34, is so good even Limp Bizkit could not ruin it!
- This self penned funk track produced by Tom Dowd, Arif Mardin, & Jerry Wexler, and features Donny Hathaway on electric piano reached USA #9 (R&B #2).
- This USA #3 (AC #1) & UK #14 soft rock hit was written and produced by singer David Gates.

- The USA #4 (R&B #4) & UK #5 & Canada #3 debut solo single for the Jackson 5 lead singer was a ballad written by Elliot Willensky, and produced by Hal Davis.
- This Aqualung progressive rock album cut was written by Ian Anderson and received regular airplay on USA rock stations during the early 1970s probably due to its distinctive long bluesy piano introduction.
- This USA #12 (AC #1) cover of the Association's baroque pop classic written by The Addrisi Brothers, was produced by the same man behind The Association's record, Bones Howe.

10 more Retro Rewind entries this week from:
- The USA #1 (R&B #1) & UK #15 somber, Hohner Pianet electric piano based hunk record with a rhythm box (or drum machine) providing the rhythm, making it the first number-one hit to feature a programmed rhythm track. Sly Stone and his sister Rose sing lead on the song. Bobby Womack plays rhythm guitar on this bona fide classic.
- The Marc Bolan penned UK #2 Glam Rock hit from Electric Warrior was produced by Tony Visconti. The music and rhythm are similar to that of the Howlin' Wolf song "You'll Be Mine", written by Willie Dixon which Bolan freely admitted at the time (as back in those days libel lawyers were not as ambulance chasing as they are today).
- The opening instrumental track, except for a spoken line from drummer Nick Mason, "One of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces." from the progressive rock quartet's Meddle album. Features double-tracked bass guitars played by David Gilmour and Roger Waters.
- The USA #12 (R&B #2) classic soul song by Chicago R&B/gospel group, was written by Luther Ingram & Mack Rice; and produced by Al Bell. It turned into a nice little earner in the 1980s thanks to cover versions by the Kane Gang, & Bruce Willis .... and Madonna's Express Yourself settling out of court for plagiarism handing over a rumoured 25% of the songwriting publishing and royalties.
- The popular song written by Jimmy Holiday and Eddie Reeves and recorded by Ray Charles for his 1971 album The Volcanic Action of My Soul, was covered in a folk pop style by the husband & wife duo resulting in a USA #7 (AC #1) & UK #8 hit.
- This easy listening Christian ballad UK #13 hit was written by Guy Fletcher & Doug Flett.
- Written by guitarist Alvin Lee, it was the lead single from the English blues rock band's 1971 album A Space in Time and became their only USA hit making USA #40.
- This UK #3 novelty was written and produced by Jonathan King. The lead vocals were supplied by Barbara Kay, then in her 40s.
- This Steve Barri produced pop track for the Los Angeles blue eyed soul rock group reached USA #16 & Canada #2.
- The slow dramatic ballad written and sung by Barry Gibb, and released on the Bee Gees' album Trafalgar in 1971 reached USA #53.

That certainly surprised me - would never have guessed you would chart Diana Ross' Surrender at #1.
I found it rather frantic and it probably reached #100 here on the back of I'm Still Waiting.
It split opinion in the US going top 10 in a number of markets but was completely ignore in others resulting in an overall poor showing.
Obviously Tony Blackburn had immense influence amd I do like Waiting but compared to some of her other singles I an baffled how it did just so well.

Where as I love it from the way it starts off with a stomp, but then quickly builds to a gospel chorus. Hence, it does not fall foul of the thinking "Hmm, Aretha Franklin would sing that so much better, because the verses are perfectly suited to Ms Ross purring low sexy vocals, and the chorus is basically "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" minus the flab and histrionics. And it gets the job done inside 3 minutes. Brilliant.

The London power rock band score their 5th Retro Rewind chart topper with one of the classic Who Next album cuts.... Another week with ten new entries:
- First written by Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks in the aborted late 1966/early 1967 Smile album sessions. The complex progressive surf pop track was finished off in 1971 by Carl & Dennis Wilson and became the final track and title track of the group's latest album. Released as a single it neither troubled the USA or UK charts.
- The English comedian's self penned innuendo-laden comedy novelty song which topped the UK singles charts (denying T Rex's Jeepster for over a month), & Australian charts. On Desert Island Discs in May 2006, Conservative Party leader David Cameron picked it as one of his eight favourite records.
- The South African's self penned progressive Glam Rock track produced by Gus Dudgeon reached UK #4 on Fly records.
- This USA #4 (AC #1) pop rock track written by Paul Williams, featured the lead vocals of Chuck Negron. However, it was written for, and rejected by the Carpenters.
- The self penned USA #4 second single and title track from the album Coat of Many Colors topped the USA country charts. It was inspired by the biblical story of Joseph and his Coat of Many Colors.
- Written by songwriters Roger Greenaway and Roger Cook, and produced by George Martin. The Liverpool born singer turned TV Personality reached UK #3 (& Ireland #3). It was the theme to the fifth series of Black's BBC variety show Cilla, and her final top ten hit.
- The much played Electric Warrior album track, was a short melancholic folk Glam Rock ballad produced by Tony Visconti. It was also the other side of the Jeepster single.
- This ballad remake of the Lulu USA top 30 hit, for her 1972 Young, Gifted and Black album which like Lulu's New Routes was produced by Arif Mardin, Jerry Wexler and Tom Dowd it was released as the B-side of "Rock Steady" and peaked at R&B #9. On the Cashbox chart which split A & B sides it peaked at USA #73.
- This influential UK #31 African worldbeat track was recorded by the pseudonym of French composer, arranger and producer Michel Bernholc.
- The title track of the fifth studio album by the British rock band, was their first album with American guitarist Bob Welch and the first to feature Christine McVie as a full member. Bob Welch's track which appeared in the movie Almost Famous moves closer to the melodic pop sound that would finally break them into America four years later after he had left the group.

Eleven new entries this week from:
- The seminal power rock reworking of the Mississippi blues song written and first recorded by husband and wife Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929, which was the eight minute final track off the English rock band's untitled 4th studio album (now commonly known as "Four Symbols).
- AKA "The Rollerskate song" written and sung by folk music singer Melanie Safka-Schekeryk. It topped the USA, Canada & Australian charts and reached UK #4. It was later reworked in 1976 by the Worzels.
- The latest self penned midtempo piano pop effort by the Irish born songwriter hit UK #5 & Ireland #7.
- This 1969 USA #121 song written by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield, referring to Amarillo, Texas, was covered by the Yorkshire born singing peaking at UK #18. But it was a much bigger hit in Europe where it went top ten in most territories including #1 in Germany & Spain. In 2002, Tony Christie's version was used in the Channel 4 sitcom Phoenix Nights. The song was then re-released by Peter Kay with an all star video in 2005 to raise money for Comic Relief...
- The famous self penned country song about old people, which has been covered by dozens of artists and is this Illinois born singer/songwriter's signature tune.
- This self written & produced funk soul USA #69 (R&B #13) single, was the opening track taken from the album Roots.
- This much covered, much sampled ("No Diggity No Doubt") USA #42 was written by Bill Withers about his own grandmother. This folk R&B track was taken from his first album Just as I Am, produced by Booker T. Jones.
- The Sunshine pop USA #55 & UK #25 duet single between Motown singing groups, was taken from their joint album The Return of the Magnificent 7.
- The USA #98 & UK #34 title track of the fifth album by Cree folk singer/songwriter, saw her embrace Nashville and country music. It has been covered on numerous occasions, but the most successful version is Swedish singer Lena Andersson Swedish language version "Är det konstigt att man längtar bort nån gång?" which spent 9 weeks at #1 in Sweden.
- This progressive languid blues rock USA #60 single from the corresponding "Bark" album, was written by the group out of a jam session and featured new drummer Joey Covington on lead vocals, and Carlos Santana on guitar.
- The 15 minutes plus progressive rock title track of this suite is Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky's most famous piano composition and has become a showpiece for virtuoso pianists. But I'd imagine most of you will instantly recognise the Promenade sections as being the theme to The New Statesman, the 1990s TV comedy series satirising the United Kingdom's Conservative Party Government of the period starring Rik Mayall as Alan B'Stard.

- The Tapestry album recover of the landmark 1967 Aretha Franklin soul single.

The Canadian singer/songwriter tops my Retro Rewind chart for the first time with this haunting Seasonal offering... Elsewhere, seven new entries from:
- The haunting confessional melodic pop ballad from Imagine, which was not released as a single at the time, but received significant radio airplay. The song topped the charts in 1981 via Roxy Music's superb effort.
- This British reworking of the Bill Backer, Billy Davis, Roger Cook & Roger Greenaway penned pop song that originated as the jingle "Buy the World a Coke" in the groundbreaking 1971 "Hilltop" television commercial for Coca-Cola. The result was a global top ten hit including #1 in the UK, & New Zealand, and #7 in USA & Australia.
- This USA Cashbox #41 & UK #45 seasonal ballad was written by Richard Carpenter and Frank Pooler and originally recorded in 1970. It topped the USA's Xmas Christmas chart in 1971 (Joni Mitchell was #2, and a song by a Beatle & his Mrs was #3 , but as it was a much bigger international hit 12 months later I will chart it then).
- The title track of his 1972 album was written by the soul singer with producer Willie Mitchell, and Al Jackson, Jr. This soul classic reached USA #1 (R&B #1) & UK #7.
- The British blue eyed pop soul ensemble formed by Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway made UK #4 & USA #29, as well as topping the charts in South Africa & New Zealand. The one hit wonder group's lead singer was the former Plastic Penny vocalist, Brian Keith; and this song was later covered by Paul Young.
- The Miami-based soul and R&B singer-songwriter much sampled USA #6 (R&B #2) signature funk soul tune.
- The charming homespun USA #22 single culled from the very poor Wings Wild Life album. It was later a 1974 minor UK hit for David Cassidy.

The former Beatle finally gains his first solo Retro Rewind chart topper with the Imagine album cut. Nine more new entries arrive from:
- The John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page, & Robert Plant written opening hard rock track of the 1970s rock legends fourth album was a reference to a nameless, black Labrador Retriever that wandered around the Headley Grange studios during recording. The retriever, despite his advanced age, was still sexually adventurous, like the song's protagonist who reiterates his desperate desire for a woman's love and the happiness it provides. Where this was released as a single a couple of months after the album it reached USA #15, Canada #14 & Australia #10.
- The 11 & a half minutes progressive rock jazz fusion hybrid title track of the group's 1971 studio album was written by Jim Capaldi and Steve Winwood.
- The USA #1 & UK #3 (deliberately) Neil Young sounding debut country folk rock single of the band's self titled first album was written by their singer/guitarist Dewey Bunnell whilst stoned, and produced by Ian Samwell.
- The self penned seminal funk proto hip hop spoken word poem and song produced by Bob Thiele for the Chicago born artist.
- This feel good UK #6 & USA #17 rocker written by Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood was taken from the album A Nod Is As Good As a Wink... to a Blind Horse.
- This future Carpenters single was written by Carole King and Toni Stern, and was taken from the USA #1 album Music.
- The Minnesota born singer/songwriter folk singer became a one hit wonder with this acoustic USA #4 hit on Elektra records.

Eight Retro Rewind entries come from:
- This much covered folk classic is regarded by many as the unofficial Canadian national anthem. It is also the most requested (7 times) song written and composed by a female artist on BBC Radio 6 Music's Do You Remember The First Time.
- The eerie string-laden Marc Bolan penned, Tony Visconti produced Electric Warrior album cut which has been covered by numerous artists including Morrissey; The Enemy; Claire Maguire; & Shakespear's Sister
- The seven & a half minute long In the Court of the Crimson King progressive rock album classic cut, became a belated hit across Europe early in 1972. Kanye West sampled the song on "Power", from his 2010 album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
- The flip side of the "Black Dog" single, is a medium tempo hard rocker which begins with bassist John Paul Jones on Hohner electric piano. The basic structure developed from a riff Jimmy Page came up with which was enhanced by John Paul Jones, whose electric piano introduces the theme on the finished track. Before Robert Plant brings in his multi-tracked falsetto vocals. In other words this sounds like Queen before Queen existed.
- The London born "Scottish" rock singer's folk ballad from Every Picture Tells A Story. It features Lindisfarne's Ray Jackson on the mandolin.
- The spiritual and very jazzy What's Going On soulful mantra later covered by the likes of Aretha Franklin; Mavis Staples; John Legend; D'Angelo; & The Roots.
- The final song on the Canadian's Songs Of Love & Hate album, became an unlikely France #4 hit after it was used in a documentary on the 15th century French heroine.
- The Scottish bubblegum pop group's UK #5, which faired much better in Europe including topping the charts in the Netherlands; Norway; Belgium; & Switzerland; & #2 in Germany ...

Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, & John Bonham grab only their second Retro Rewind number one hit .... Otherwise, ten more entries coming from:
- Written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans of Welsh rock group Badfinger, and first released on their 1970 album No Dice. The song has been recorded by over 180 artists largely thanks to the New York songwriter's definitive baroque pop cover version with some help from producer Richard Perry. It topped the charts in the UK (Y/End ranked 1st Best seller), USA (Y/End ranked 4th best seller), Australia (Y/End ranked 2nd best seller), Canada, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, etc. In 1973 Paul McCartney described the ballad as "the killer song of all time". Considering what occurred to its two writers, Harry Nilsson, & Mariah Carey and that hushed up attempted suicide on September 11th 2001 (as some other event kept the media away from being otherwise curious to her official "extreme exhaustion" and a "physical and emotional breakdown" statements by her record company & management) means many people regard the song and its lyrics as a curse.
- Written by lead singer Jon Anderson, this relative punchy and succinct progressive rock track picked up significant airplay from the group's Fragile album.
- Pete Townshend's Who's Next rock album track lyrically comparing his relationship to God to that of a lover.
- The folk rock slow tempo and mellow acoustic sounding David Gilmour and Roger Waters composition from the album Meddle. The track features a sample of Liverpool fans singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" as four members of the London group were fans of Liverpool FC!
- The self penned baroque folk pop opening track of the Californian born singer/songwriter's debut self titled album. This track has been covered by Ron Sexsmith; & Fleet Foxes.
- The Welsh diva's stun Bond theme written by John Barry & Don Black surprisingly only peaked at UK #38 & USA #54.
- The Sly Stone written and produced album track taken from the USA #1 album There's A Riot Goin' On.
- The lead track and single from the soul group's 1972 Standing Ovation album on Motown reached USA #27 (R&B #3).
- This more contemporary Glam Rock sounding Russ Ballard composition reached UK #32 for the 1960s Baroque pop singer.
- The Massachusetts rock group formed in 1967 and named after their guitarist and band leader reached USA #39 with their R&B flavoured blues rock track breakthrough hit cover of The Valentino's original penned by Bobby Womack.
