I have tried searching google but cannot find anything.
I know Whitney Houston had the first cd single release in the UK with "I Wanna Dance..." in 1987 but can someone tell me what was the first single to reach No.1 in the UK on CD single over vinyl and what year was it?
Thanks in advance.

Given that "I wanna Dance..." reached number one in May 1987, wouldn't this be the answer to your question? Or are you asking a different question that I'm not reading properly?

I am asking if that sold more than vinyl 7 inch? What I am asking is what was the first cd single to reach No.1 that sold more cd copies in a week than vinyl copies

And while we're on this theme, I'd like to know what was the first #1 which was only available as a CD single ?

I don't think CD singles became massive until the early 90's. But I don't know when they would have first outsold vinyl or cassette singles (cassingles).

I think the first single to reach number one without being available on vinyl was Think Twice by Celine Dion. At the time I was collecting all number one singles and was therefore forced to buy it even though I didn't have a CD player. I still have it and to this day I don't think I've ever played it. Dreadful record. Er, I mean, CD.
There had already been a few which were not on 7" but were on 12" - Mr Vain and Boom! Shake The Room both spring to mind.

I think it may have been 'Unchained Melody' by the Righteous Brothers in 1990. If I recall it sold almost 400,000 copies on CD which accounted for almost 50% of its sales with the rest being split between cassette and vinyl.

^ if I've remembered the above incorrectly then it was 'Bohemian Rhapsody / These Are The Days Of Our Lives' by Queen which sold nearly 600,000 copies on CD in 1991/92.

It was also the last cassette single I bought from Woolworth's, on one cold Friday in February 1995 at the Gosforth, Newcastle branch. 10 and a half years later I next set foot in a Woolies, this time in my birth town of Wallsend, and bought 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor' by the Arctic Moneys on CD. And that was the last record I ever bought in Woolies, in fact it was the last time I ever went into a Woolies and three years later they closed down... I'm sure you all wanted to know that!
