Kirsty MacColl gets a second week at the top with A New England, extending her lead with a healthy 43 point margin over the rest of the chart.



Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson move up to number two with I Know Him So Well, on their sixth week on the chart.

Both A New England and I Know Him So Well are topping two individual charts, with Kirsty MacColl's song having wider appeal, picking up points from ten charts.


Bryan Adams heads back up the chart to gain a new peak at number three with Run To You.


Big Sound Authority make their Top Ten debut with This House (Is Where You Love Stands), which moves up to number four. Also sharing fourth place is Bruce Springsteen with Dancing In The Dark, now in its fourth week at this position across two separate chart runs.


This week’s highest new entry is from The Smiths with How Soon Is Now, in at number 13. Their previous four entries on the Retro Chart all went Top Ten, including a number one in 1983 for This Charming Man. All of The Smiths Retro-Chart entries have beaten the comparative Official UK Chart peaks. How Soon Is Now continues this trend, already eclipsing the number 24 peak on the Official Chart.

John Fogerty was the lead singer with Creedance Clearwater Revival. He wrote the songs "Proud Mary", "Bad Moon Rising", "Have You Ever Seen The Rain" and also "Rockin' All Over The World" which Status Quo successfully coivered. When he split with the band, he gave them all future royalties on CCR songs. They then sued him for plagiarism when his new music sounded "too close" to his old music, thus for copying himself. John Fogerty won, as the court ruled you can only copyright melody and lyrics and not a style of music.

REO Speedwagon were around about the same time as Creedence Clearwater Revival, starting out in 1968, but it took them years to find success. Once they did they got two US #1s, the first in 1981 and the one that charts here, a great piece of soft rock.

I have a good friend who is a really big fan of Gary Numan. As John Peel pointed out several times on TOTP, Bill Sharpe worked for the BBC and also was the keyboard player with Shakatak (and they made some great songs, especially the instrumental parts). A bit different for him then, but it gave Gary Numan his biggest hit post 1982's "We Take Mystery (To Bed)".

Teena Marie's big UK hit happened in the summer of 1980. Her big US hit happened nearly 5 years later.

Kool & The Gang's song title is pronounced "miss led" and not "mizzled" or "miled". Strange thing is English pronunciation compared to spelling.
