A new number 1 this week as the Beatles with Strawberry Fields push the Rolling Stones of the top after 4 weeks. The Stones are the filling in a Beatles sandwich, with Penny Lane at number 3. I'm wondering how come "The Look Of Love" by Dusty Springfield is in there. That song didn't reach the UK chart at all, and charted in the USA in October 1967. So why are people charting it in February-March? It enters my chart on 14th October at #19...

Sorry if I don't conform to your rules of only including records which reach the charts.

This week's NEW ENTRIES:-
Beach Boys - LITTLE DEUCE COUPE :: With Brian Wilson struggling to make progress on the "Smile" album, Capitol Records decided to release the Beach Boys' 1963 US LP "Surfer Girl" in the UK. [It was the second of three albums the band was pressurised into making in 1963 alone]. My favourite cut from "Surfer Girl" is "Little Deuce Coupe" which originally appeared as the B-side to the "Surfer Girl" single in the USA, but to the best of my knowledge never got a 7" release outside North America. It's a song about a car.
Beach Boys - CATCH A WAVE :: The best album track from "Surfer Girl" features a rare appearance by Mike Love's sister, Maureen, on harp. The lyrics were re-written in 1964 by Brian Wilson and Roger Christian, and then recorded as "Sidewalk Surfin'" by Jan & Dean. It made the US Top 30, proclaiming the thrill of the "newest sport around", skateboarding.
The Smoke - MY FRIEND JACK :: A song about tripping on LSD that was so blatant, the BBC actually noticed, and promptly banned it. In continental Europe it was a much bigger hit, and the Smoke picked up several tv appearances. The Smoke came from York, and this was their one and only hit. Their guitarist, John Lund later twiddled knobs for Frank Farian. Hence Boney M putting out a cover in 1980, but it was their first UK single to miss the Top 40.

The Yorkshire Mod psychedelic rock band's only hit peaked at UK #45 despite being banned by the BBC for alleged drug references, but it was a big hit in Europe, being most successful in Germany #2 peak. The band who wrote this earned further royalties after Boney M covered this song, helped by the fact the sound engineer was John "Zeke" Lund former guitarist of The Smoke!

I'm wondering how come "The Look Of Love" by Dusty Springfield is in there. That song didn't reach the UK chart at all, and charted in the USA in October 1967. So why are people charting it in February-March? It enters my chart on 14th October at #19... ..and I'm charting it cos others are charting it:) - I missed the 1966 charts (or I would have charted it then), and this Dusty track is much better than the current UK single of hers, don't understand why it wasn't a UK hit - Gladys Knight eventually made it one and her version wasn't quite up to Dusty's (though still great).

I confess to having followed others' suit too - although the fact it was released at this time in the UK makes me feel like it's the right time to chart it. I only chart the US hits as I don't know when or if they were released in the UK when they didn't chart.

Out of curiosity, how accessible were the US charts to British music fans back in 1967 ?
Obviously, there was no Internet to interrogate. I don't believe any British newspapers or music papers published the US charts at the time (although I'm happy to be corrected). Were there any US chart countdowns on the pirate radio stations ?
My suspicion is that the various competing UK charts were more than enough to satisfy music fans over here, and we were only aware of the US singles that their record companies chose to push over here, or that the occasional radio DJ chose to spotlight.

I don't know about 1967, of course. In 1980 I used to get the Billboard charts as well as the official UK charts (compiled by BMRB at the time) in Record Mirror.
Paul Gambaccini used to count down the US singles chart on Radio 1. I don't know when that started, but obviously radio 1 didn't even exist until 30 September 1967. Certainly by 1979 he was doing that broadcast.
So in this time I got introduced to various hits by Styx (in addition to Babe), Air Supply (in addition to All Out Of Love), Hall & Oates (in addition to I Can't Go For That (which isn't that good anyway) and Maneater (which is quite good)), Huey Lewis & The News, Cars (other than their 3 UK hits, of which My Best Friends Girl wasn't even a hit in the USA), and even Journey.

Well, as a kid, I wasn't aware of anything happening in American charts during the 60's. I knew they existed, in reference to chart positions of songs I liked and read about, but they weren't on UK radio that I was aware of. Pretty sure they would have been on the American Forces Network though - I know I was listening to the American Top 40 in the early 70's on it with Casey Kasem aka Shaggy in Scooby Doo, and the networks had been broadcasting since the 40's.

I was around then and didn't know much about US music charts, occasionally DJ's might say this was a big hit in the US. Like popchartfreak I listened to radio Caroline, radio north sea, radio Luxembourg and AFN although reception was always a bit dodgy on a small transistor radio, from memory that would be around 1970/1.

3rd March 1967
The Mamas & The Papas get what would have been their 3rd chart-topper (if I'd done 1965/66 charts) with the fab oldie, done harmony-oldie style, and holding off the Fabs at 2 and 3. Highest new entry is the track that got reissued in the Uk in 1972, at which point I bought the record with my pocket money and it topped my chart: Bernadette is epic. The other high new entry is one my dad bought in a batch of singles he got from somewhere in 1967/8: they all had "Not For Sale" printed on the label, so it must have been from an RAF mate who knew a DJ or something: My Friend Jack by The Smoke. I liked it but didn't love it at the time, but it's grown into love with the years. I have to comment at how low records are peaking in these charts compared to how I always envisaged they would peak in my personal charts of the time. Just shows what happens when there are so many great records about. At least most of those I loved at the time have recharted over the years in higher positions! Frinstance 2,3,4,10,15,18 & 19 have all made the UK charts in later years (just out of the top 20) while 7,9,16 have also made my personal charts along with all the aforementioned.
