Ed Sheeran's new album on first listen: OK, Clearly Castle On The Hill is excellent, it nails the Radio-friendly-anthemic-song-about-when-I-was-younger-and-everything-was-great genre in a way maybe only Summer Of '69 has before it, but really the rest of the album seems to be an oddly disjointed but bland attempt at including something for everyone.
Second listen: Alright, some of the tunes are pretty good, but the folksy lyrics with deliberately everyman references to sweaty bed sheets, driving down the A14 and sipping champagne from a cider can (why would you do that?) are just annoying.
Third listen: Actually those lyrics are quite clever in how simplistic but authentic they are, that song about his Mum dying is very touching and the one where he basically sings his family background Who Do You Think You Are style is quite an achievement, but is it really necessary to shoe-horn in those traditional Irish, Spanish and African bits as though someone thought a bit of cultural theft would make it sell better? Also, you really shouldn't use strings as such an obvious attempt to switch on the listeners emotions, it's like someone's holding up a sign saying "cry now".
Fourth listen: Got a little emotional during one of the string sections, did a little jig during one of the Irish bits, considering a family holiday in Suffolk. He's got to try to remember not to rap though, such a bad idea.
Fifth listen: OK, I give up, I tried my absolute best to resist but this is excellent, I'll probably be listening to it all year

Thanks for the review - I listened to it non stop for about a week not so much because I'm an Ed fan but because I was late to the party to listening to albums on Spotify and this is probably my first brand new one on that format. Hence I am probably responsible for some of the singles "sales" via streaming that many don't like. It was.a very simple but addictive album but find I wear off it quickly too. I don't mind the world music bits per se - it's lovely having Irish folk inspired songs so high in the charts but some of the lyrics are dreadful especially the 'Let's be a simpleton and strum a guitar' nonsense of 'What so I know?' and the endless references to drink and throwing up.
I love 'Supermarket Flowers' the most - sounds like something you hear in a modern hands in the air church maybe but it is touching. 'Galway', 'Dive' (great melody there), 'Eraser' and 'Save Myself are my favourites. The worse have to be the sickly 'Paean', the aforementioned 'What do I know' and the dull 'Hearts don't break'
It's a bit like fast food at the end of the day (or world buffet in this case maybe!) - most fairly pleasant but nothing of outstanding quality, That said there are far worse albums that do better so good luck to him.
