LP Smiths - Frankly Mr Shankly (1LP The Queen Is Dead)
Topping my retro rewind chart is this Stiff Records release which sound like Pulp nearly a decade before they became professionally active. The band's self penned UK #21 hit featured the lead vocals of Jim Irwin whom after the band folded in 1990 became a music journalist with Melody Maker, Mojo, The Word, Time Out, The Sunday Times and The Guardian. He famously gave a one star review for the Klaxons debut album, Myths of the Near Future which subsequently won the 2007 Mercury Music Award (which has gone down infamy for beating Amy Winehouse' Back To Black album - which he gave a glowing 5 star review to in the Guardian declaring it "an instant timeless classic"!) Since 2010 he has returned to songwriting for the likes of Pixie Lott; Lissie; Nothing But Thieves; Lower Than Atlantis; Lana Del Rey; Gabrielle Aplin; Jack Savoretti; etc.
My featured faller is taken from the album Parade, and was written by The Revolution members Wendy & Lisa together with Prince. This jazzy flavoured track stalled at #45 in the UK & Australia, and peaked at #23 in both USA & Canada.
The True Blue album track was written by Brian Elliot with additional lyrics by Madonna, who produced it with Stephen Bray. It became a massive global smash hit topping the charts in USA, UK, Australia, Canada, Italy, Ireland, Belgium, Netherlands & Norway.

"Papa Don't Preach" is only one 80s single from Madonna, which I dislike.

40 Pet Shop Boys - Opportunities (6wks 32-7-6-15-28-40)
LP Housemartins - Get Up Off Your Knees (1LP London 0 Hull 4)
My highest new entry is the Stewart Levine produced London sophistipop soul act with this track on EMI records which despite substantial radio airplay failed to reach the UK top 40.
My featured faller is the London synth pop group whom became international one hit wonders with their USA #12 & Australia #6 single. The spaghetti western themed video, filmed on-location in Hampstead Heath, featured a cameo appearance by Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead. In the late 1990s they successfully sued Paula Cole "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone" for plagiarism.

My featured faller is the gospel pop song (which inspired the world's best selling single of 1989) written and recorded for the soundtrack of the Jim Henson film Labyrinth. Bowie and producer Arif Martin recorded "Underground" at Atlantic Studios in New York. The UK #21, USA #53, Canada #73, & Australia #26 track included a large chorus of backing vocalists (including Chaka Khan, Luther Vandross, Cissy Houston and Chic's female vocalists) and blues guitarist Albert Collins.
My highest new entry is the Birmingham reggae group's self penned anti-apartheid song which was censored in South Africa. It featured backing singers Jaki Graham, Mo Birch and Ruby Turner, and reached UK #5 & #1 in the Netherlands.

The death of their manager Tony Fletcher of a heart attack shortly after supporting David Bowie on his Glass Spider tour caused them to disband. Their singer/songwriter & bassist Mark Burgess went on to manage his younger brother's band The Charlatans.
