My highest new entry is the UK #15 hit re-rerelease of the September 1982 acerbic Liverpool alternative comedian's comedy record made with a number of The Blockheads and produced by Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley, largely thanks to his appearances in the first series of the BBC sitcom The Young Ones, and the ITV sitcom Whoops Apocalypse.

LP Michael Jackson - The Lady In My Life (1LP Thriller)
The second single from the synth pop trio's Into The Gap album produced by Alex Sadkin, which peaked at UK #3, USA #11, Australia #14 & Canada #11.
My highest new entry is the global #1 (including USA, UK, Australia & Canada) love song third single from the former Commodores lead singer's second solo album Can't Slow Down, which is most famous for that Bob Giraldi's directed video featuring the story of Richie as a theater and acting teacher having a seemingly unrequited love for a blind student (Laura Carrington) until he discovers she shares the feeling as demonstrated by the discovery that she is sculpting a likeness of his head. The bust used in the video, which bears little resemblance to Richie, has been parodied in popular culture. Richie himself complained to the video's director, Bob Giraldi, that the bust did not look like him. Director Giraldi's response was "Lionel, she's blind..."

This UK #65 single from the Middlesborough supporter's album Wired To The Moon (thanks to Graeme Souness) was famously sung by the Liverpool FC players whilst waiting in the tunnel at the Olympic Stadium in Rome at the European cup final in 1984 which they won. Fast forward 34 years and the same equivalent players singing the Canadian rapper (& Liverpool FC supporter) Drake's God's Plan in the dressing room in Kiev before the 2018 ECL final was in hindsight not such a good idea...
My highest new entry was the harmonica heavy third single to be taken from their 1984 album Into the Gap which peaked at UK #2, Ireland #5, Australia #47, & USA #44.

My featured faller is a New Wave track I can't recall hearing until 1990 when I got a Greatest Hits album by them, as it was not a hit in the UK. This USA #11, Canada #35, Australia #60 hit by the Californian all girl band was produced by Martin Rushent from their Talk Show album, & was written by Charlotte Caffey and Kathy Valentine.

EMI bungled the release of Ocean Deep.
Originally the B-side the Baby You're Dynamite it was promoted to double-A a couple of weeks later but the momentum was already lost and there was little airplay - a real lost opportunity.

EMI bungled the release of Ocean Deep. Originally the B-side the Baby You're Dynamite it was promoted to double-A a couple of weeks later but the momentum was already lost and there was little airplay - a real lost opportunity. I have mixed feelings over Ocean Deep.
On the one hand it is a real good AC ballad which should have been the A side; but on the other hand it seemed to become the easy listening Daniel O'Donnell-esque template he used increasingly from the second half of the 1980s onwards where he seemed to give up trying to be modern sounding (bar the occasional effort).

The highest of nine new entries debuts at the top and is the second single by the Liverpool group signed to Trevor Horn's ZTT record label with this anti-war #1 hit in the UK, Ireland, Germany, New Zealand, Belgium, Greece; & Australia #4, Canada #32, & USA #43. Featuring a memorable Godley & Creme directed video.
My featured faller comes from the London female trio's socially aware UK #23 third single released from their self-titled second album produced by Jolley & Swain.
As a bonus I have included the brilliant live February 1985 American Music Awards performance covering the 1980 Dirty Mind album Prince song. Remember this cover was recorded in 1983, the best part of a year before Prince became the biggest popstar on the planet via the Purple Rain OST & album. Watching this back, and comparing her other live performances of this era it is very easy to see why she was rated as a superior talent to Madonna ....
