For retro singles charts I listen to a playlist of up to 40 songs, then score them up all and from that I compile the charts. 40 songs usually covers 4 or 5 weeks. This one was the tail-end of the last playlist, and I have scored up the next playlist.
During the 3 weeks I do not listen to music, and that begins this Tuesday, 11th July and ends on Tuesday 1 August and is inclusive of both dates and even Wednesday 2 August until midday.
The next 3 weeks are "catch-up" for the current weekly chart because I listen to 2 playlists at a time and compile 2 charts a week from it. Therefore during this period I also do not listen to retro playlists.
It is unlikely I will have time to score up the current retro playlist before the 3 weeks but will do so during catch-up. However I do have enough to get me all the way until 15 February as the next playlist covered 6 weeks. The one after that (that I haven't score up yet) just 4 weeks.
I will say that at this moment the number of great songs is diminishing. I usually run through and mark these first, and it can extend to at best of times 15 in a playlist. For the playlist coming up I marked just 7 songs. A few others in listening through came up as reasonably good, and quite a lot turned out way below quality.
Incidentally, one of the reasons I started doing this was to help me compile oldies playlists, and not just so I would know how many NM #1s the Beatles would actually have if my chart era covered their whole career...

1969 is going to get off to a slow start.
There are many re-issues about to hit my playlist, most of which were rejected, one was added as it wasn't a hit (missed the US top 40) the first time. There are also two songs from 1969 that were #1 in the UK in 1975, and one of them is #1 here now.

-- ( -- ) The Beginning Of My End - Unifics -- ( -- ) I've Gotta Be Me - Sammy Davis Jr. -- ( -- ) Are You Happy - Jerry Butler
No new entries this week. Songs near the bottom even start going back up. There were 3 possible entries this week but none of them made it in. It looked like none of them had a score high enough to normally get in but I thought they might scrape it with songs going down possibly dropping below that threshold too but they didn't.
For next week I have 7 songs of which 5 are placed higher than Unifics (on the monthly playlist).
I don't know if this is just the start of 1969 but the next playlist isn't that great either. Certainly 1969 seems to be a drop in standard from the last 5 years that preceded it, and the end of 1968 was a huge bang.

We have 4 new entries this week. The Turtles get the highest entry with a song that would later be a hit for Salt N Pepa and the Lightning Seeds in the UK. The song was actually about 3 years old and written by the Byrds (in spite of them being more famous for releasing Bob Dylan covers they could write a song too). They never actually released it so the Turtles eventually did.
Another song given hip-hop treatment in the 1990s is "Ready Or Not", the main chorus of which was used by the Fugees in their 2nd UK #1. They also sampled an Enya track.
Marv Johnson had a very early #1 on thie retro chart back near the beginning of 1960 with "You Got What It Takes". That wasn't his only hit as he had 3 more singles that year but this is the first time since 1960 he has charted.
That song (You Got What It Takes) was co-written by Berry Gordy, founder of Motown, and Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell also covered it.. By 1969 Tammi is losing her fight against cancer of the brain and will soon retire but more music will be released through this year.

31 ( -- ) Sweet Cream Ladies Forward March - Box Tops 32 ( 19 ) I Heard It Through The Grapevine - Marvin Gaye (#1[5]) 33 ( 29 ) Lo Mucho Que Te Quiero - Rene & Rene (#34) 34 ( 40 ) I'm Livin' In Shame - Diana Ross & The Supremes 35 ( 24 ) This Is My Country - Impressions (#18) 36 ( 28 ) If I Can Dream - Elvis Presley (#32) 37 ( 27 ) Crimson And Clover - Tommy James & The Shondells (#24) 38 ( 26 ) Build Me Up Buttercup - Foundations (#2[3]) 39 ( -- ) The Way It Used To Be - Engelbert Humperdinck 40 ( -- ) You - Johnny Johnson & The Bandwagon

-- ( -- ) But You Know I Love You - First Edition -- ( -- ) Give it Up Or Turn It Loose - James Brown
The Turtles classic gets to #1, their first after "Elenore" got stuck at #2 near the end of last year behind "Eloise". Thus both of these and "She'd Rather Be With Me" were bigger hits on this chart than their standard "Happy Together".
No longer doing epic songs over 8 minutes, John Fogerty's song gets the highest entry this week. Below that, Paul Jones is singing a song from the musical "Hair". No "Let The Sunshine In" on this version, just "Aquarius".
A bit further down Eden Kane's brother enters with his famous UK #1. I have marked this as the worst UK #1 of 1969 before, and if the charts were stronger than they are right now this might not have charted, but the list was generally quite weak and this got in.

John Fogerty's composition reaches the top. The Zombies get a high new entry at the same time as member Colin Blunstone is doing his own solo version of "She's Not There" under the name of Neil McArthur. That song reached #2 for them in 1964 and remains their biggest hit to date.
Barry Ryan follows up "Eloise" with a song that enters inside the top 20.

No change at #1, last week's highest entry by the Zombies makes a good climb and the highest new entry comes from Noel Harrison. As Frankie Laine's country ballad makes it in (a song written by Marty Robbins - you remember him?) - this is his first hit for a while. And will be his last ever.
The new entry at #29 was originally recorded in 1966 but wasn't a hit back then. In 1969 it peaked at #44 in the UK chart. In 1985 a cover version by the Untouchables peaked at #59 around the time we are doing now in retro chart, but don't expect to see that version in my chart.

In the USA, Proud Mary peaked at #2 (one of 5 singles by Creedence Clearwater Revival to peak in that position). "Dizzy" climbed above it to #1 on one of those weeks, so now there's a bit of revenge as Dizzy is kept off #1 by this song. (The previous week Proud Mary was #1 behind Sly & The Family Stone's "Everyday People"). In the USA, "Time Of The Season" also peaked at #3 where it is now likely to peak here.
The top two entries are by two of the 60s britpop groups (or British Invasion or whatever they're called), the Hollies and Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich. For the latter of those we are nearing the end of their career. For the Hollies I suspect something big may come from them during 1969 but maybe they'll have to change their style a bit first.

Noel Harrison gets to #1. The tune was originally based on a piece by Mozart and with French lyrics. It was then given an English lyric and used in the film "The Thomas Crown Affair" in 1968 after which it became a hit in 1969, peaking at #8.
This is the last chart before the break, so you won't see another one published for about 5 weeks. (The break is 6 weeks but I have been posting these relatively slowly).
I feel there is a slight change of direction but it's slow and it may be needed. I thought the year might have taken off by now but it hasn't really.
Of the new entries today, we have UK's Eurovision co-winner: it finished in a 4-way tie for first. This week we'll see how popular this song was on Haven along with other UK entries. We have 2 old songs that have been re-issued: Harlem Shuffle was originally released in 1963 but was not a hit (surprisingly). The intro may also sound familiar as it was sampled for House Of Pain's "Jump Around".
Sarah Vaughan and Billy Eckstein's song is also a re-issue, or just an old recording released late on in the UK. Sarah Vaughan actually had a #1 on this chart at the start of 1961 with "Serenata". That one had more of a "swing" feel to it, this one is just a love ballad, and dates back to the 1950s. Love ballads like this with male and female vocals were popular in the UK in the 1980s. Sort of shows how dated they were.
We've had Paul Jones's hit of "Aquarius" and now the 5th Dimension decide to medley it with "Let The Sunshine In". Both these songs, along with Nina Simone's recent hit "Ain't Got No - I Got Life" all come from the musical "Hair".

Briefly back. This is from the playlist of just 3 weeks of 1969 that I had in the week following the 3 weeks when I was still on one playlist. This week I am in my last of the double playlists in catch-up and when I hit the festivals I will either have no retro playlist again or a very short one. After all that is over, it will be full swing again. So not sure exactly when I'll finish the 1960s or reach the "summer of 69", but that will probably be whilst the Bryan Adams song is still in the other chart thread...
In any case, a classic song by The Who comes in as the highest new entry with the first UK reggae #1 behind it.

Ok, so who had the #1 in my chart on my 4th birthday? Indeed they did..
Then a bunch of artists entering my chart. Other than Marbles, all artists I know well but not for those particular songs. Cowsills aren't that well known in the UK but they had a big hit in my chart here in 1967 with "The Rain The Park And Other Things".

The Who remain at #1. There seem to be quite a few instrumentals as for the second week the highest new entry is one - the theme from Hawaii Five-O and in case you don't know it but remember Jive Bunny's hits, it's the instrumental part that starts "That's What I Like". The lowest entry is also instrumental - in 1962 we had Nut Rocker. Now a piece from a different Tchaikowsky ballet, Swan Lake, is given a reggae treatment.
Cream's hit "Badge" is co-written by George Harrison along with Eric Clapton of the band.
Elvis fails to chart.. I wonder which way his career will go next..

Just as Simon & Garfunkel storm to #1 they are going to be under threat from the Beatles who enter with Billy Preston, a song that was a UK #1 for 6 weeks.
Two separate entries from Diana Ross & The Supremes. "I'm Livin' In Shame" is the better song but "The Composer" contains a lyric "You're the number one in my personal chart...". You see, Diana Ross did personal charts back in 1969..
Ray Stevens is back to his novelty stuff now. He'll be doing mostly that of course.

-- ( -- ) Morning Girl - Neon Philharmonic
No change at #1, but the Beatles climb to #2 and also get another new entry. The highest entry is by Marvin Gaye. The B-side to this single is "Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home)"... Marvin Gaye had a big #1 at the end of 1968.
More surprising is the new entry by Des O'Connor whose singles have struggled to get into this chart before. This one is uptempo, a bit like the kind of thing Tommy Steele or Lonnie Donegan were doing at the start of these charts in 1960.
Chicken Shack's single is a cover of a B-side by Etta James. The lead singer is Christine McVie - she is married to John McVie of Fleetwood Mac. (And yes later she will join the group too).

The retro playlists will be put on hold for 3 of the next 4 weeks during the festivals, however I still have a 2-week backlog of these to post charts for (i.e. 7 more charts) plus whatever comes out in the next one, so I'll be well into the "summer of 69" by the time this period ends.
There will be a special mention on the chart close to 20th July (which was a Sunday) of course.
