There we go blowing our playoffs, albeit we did well in the end to even reach them. Selling Ricky Holmes in the transfer window and not replacing him isn't the way to get promoted when you're on the edge of the playoffs.
I think Lee Bowyer did as well as he could with the players he had.

Sky Sports are reporting that Sam Allardyce has left Everton after being sacked. What a surprise!

There's some sad news being reported on the news that former Aston Villa and Bolton player Jlloyd Samuel has died today in a car crash in Cheshire. Aged 37, he played for Villa for almost a decade from 1998 to 2007 before moving to Bolton for four years.
While I hope Boro can climb a mountain to beat Villa tonight in the second leg of the semi final play-off for promotion to the Premier League it's going to be an emotionally charged atmosphere at Villa Park tonight. RIP.

I'm team Villa tonight sorry I had a 250/1 bet on Newcastle finishing top 10, Sunderland relegated, Man U top 2, Villa promoted. So only Villa left to go £502 for £2 I would be gutted to fall at the last hurdle but I have already been paid out £200 for another small bet of Villa, Wolves, Blackburn, Luton, Wigan, Liverpool all top 6

Boo to both you guys but if Villa do win tonight and beat Fulham to get promoted I'll be happy for Razzle Dazzle! 500 notes sounds good to me!

Obviously I'd like to see Boro win but honestly can't see them beating Fulham, even if they somehow get past Villa tonight. They just seem to bottle it in the big games...

Sadly Boro haven't reached the play off final. Villa have won on the away goal as the game ended up 0-0 tonight. Bah! But onwards and upwards and the final is now between Fulham v Aston Villa. I'm neutral about who I want to win so I hope it's a good final.

Raz Daz, do you have a cash out option, or never take it? Sam put a £1 bet on various promotions, think he's got 2 out of 5, and Villa was his 3rd, so they are in the final, he needs Rotherham to win tonight now, then he's on for £112.
Oh and Salford City appointed Graham Alexander which sounds like a very good appointment?

Sadly no cash out. The bet I placed wasn't available as a standard accumulator because your not allowed to accumulate more than 1 event per league so as I had Sunderland to go down and Villa to go up I had to use a request a bet which you can't cash out on
The perk being I wouldn't have been able to put the bet on otherwise
I'm working on a cover bet or two involving Fulham just incase.

The England 23-mna squad has been announced. As reported both Joe Hart and Jack Wilshere have missed out. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44138600It's not the strongest of squads and there are some untested players amongs the 23 but we should at least make it out of the group stage. I would have liked to see Jonjo Shelvey in there as his form for Newcastle in recent weeks has been excellent. He can turn defense into attack in seconds with his passes. However he can be a bit hot headed and was sent of twice during the season for Newcastle. Perhaps it is this that led to Southgate overlooking him. Incidentally I only found out the other day that goalkeeper Jordan Pickford went to the same school as me. Obviously that was well after I had left but it's good to see a local lad doing well. Other notable former pupils include one of the local MPs, musician Martin Stephenson (of The Daintees) and Si King from the Hairy Bikers. Si King was there at the same time as me but I have no recollection of him.

I'm not sure we will make it out of the group stage. It's a very poor squad, led by an average coach. I just can't see us beating both Panama and Tunisia, while I assume we'll lose convincingly to Belgium.

I think Southgate should be applauded for being his own man, and not bowing to pressure to include established stars who've had a poor season (Hart, Bertrand).
My only concern is the shortage of midfielders. He's given himself lots of options in defence and attack. But if one of our midfielders gets injured and another picks up 2 yellow cards, we'll be in trouble. I'd have included Adam Lallana at the expense of one of the full-backs.
We'll easily beat Panama, and do enough against Tunisia to make it to the knock-out stages. But that will be as far as this team gets. At least nobody is hysterically over-hyping our chances this time, which means the pressure won't be too much.

Big mistake not taking one of Shelvey, Wilshere or Lallana over the likes of Delph.
I think he plans on using Walker as a CB looking at the squad

Big mistake not taking one of Shelvey, Wilshere or Lallana over the likes of Delph. I think he plans on using Walker as a CB looking at the squad Personally I feel: Shelvey = A walking Red card waiting to happen. Wilshire = not fully match fit, incapable of playing midweek & weekends. Plus allegedly he is "not a good tourist"; & pulling out of the last two friendlies against the Dutch and the Italians, only to play in the next game for Arsenal probably did him. Lallana = Injury prone all season + coming back from injury, so does not deserve selection even if he ends up being MoTM in ECL final. However, I would have selected Leon Bailey of Bayern Leverkusen & Jadon Sancho of Borussia Dortmund over Delph & Wellbeck. IMHO a huge error missing out of the potential Jamaica & Trinidad & Tobago internationals, in the same way that Roy Hodgson ignored Wilfried Zaha so he ended up becoming an Ivory Coast international. All in all a typical Southgate beige cardigan selection. On the plus side even The S*n & the Daily Heil are going to have their work cut out to hype this up with their Brexit worshipping IngurLand supporters; and well done to "Miss Pizza Hut Bagman" on insisting on no Official World Cup song.

Whilst Shelvey has had 4 red cards in nearly 200 Premierhsip games we have several shades of beige in the squad and at some point we will be losing or drawing and need to bring on a player a bit different to unlock a defence. Shelvey is the only dully fit English player with the range of passing to unlock a defence.

Shelvey - decent player? Yes. Significantly better than anyone else in the squad? No. Based on the some of the comments I've read today, you'd think he was the second coming of Pele.
Bar one or two question marks, it's about as good a squad as Southgate could've picked. We should make it out of the group. We might get past the 2nd round. Any further than the quarters would be a miracle.
Official World Cup thread soon!
