I finally got round to watching the Foo Fighters headline set at Glastonbury the other night, and I was struck by a sudden realisation that they are the metal New Order.
Formed following the tragic early death of the lead singer of one of the best bands in history, they both had fantastic debuts followed by improbably long and successful careers, during which they maintained a very loyal fan base and continually surprised with how great they could be.
I just wondered, are there any other bands who trod remarkably similar paths?

Pearl Jam, were born out of Mother Love Bone. Mother Love Bone only recorded just one album, called Apple but sadly singer Andrew Wood died of drug addiction in 1990, before it was released. One of the standout tracks from it was Crown Of Thorns, which later featured on the soundtrack to the film Singles in 1992 joined up with their song Chloe Dancer. After Wood's death, members Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament were asked to join Temple Of The Dog with Soundgarden vocalist and recently departed Chris Cornell and recorded an album. And shortly afterwards Gossard and Ament joined Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready and formed Pearl Jam and went on to much bigger things.

Most classic rock bands have similar paths where members have been in more than one example Ian Gilman. But maybe I have misjudged he topic.
