The Welsh Open got underway yesterday but without Ronnie O'Sullivan and Judd Trump, who both withdrew. Ronnie has still travelled to Llandudno to work as a pundit for Eurosport.

Meanwhile, WST has announced a new tournament, the Saudi Arabia Masters, to take place later this year, with organisers describing it as "the fourth major", which is absolutely ridiculous but also not surprising at all given the Saudi authorities seem to be of the belief that throwing a load of money at a sporting event earns prestige, rather than history, moments and atmosphere.

They must have the prize money in line with the triple crown events?
I wonder if the atmosphere will be there - if there will be even much of a local contingent attending. Presume they'll be supporting Vafaei, if he plays?

They must have the prize money in line with the triple crown events? I wonder if the atmosphere will be there - if there will be even much of a local contingent attending. Presume they'll be supporting Vafaei, if he plays? The prize money will be on a par with the World Championship, if not more. Today's statement put the Saudi prize money at "over £2 million". Last year's World Championship had a total prize fund of £2.35M with £500k to the winner. This season's UK Championship had a prize fund £1.2M, with £250k to the winner. The only Saudi events where I've seen a half-decent atmosphere have been those staged by WWE, where the crowd is fully aware of what they're watching and know the crowd interaction plays a key part. I haven't watched any of the boxing events staged there but by all accounts, the crowd was dead - partly due to the high number of rich celebrities in attendance. Also, it's by no means a given that a Saudi crowd would support an Iranian player.

Mark Allen won the Players Championship, beating Zhang Anda 10-8 in the final. Allen closes the gap on Ronnie O'Sullivan and Judd Trump at the top of the rankings, with just £128,500 separating the three, with three ranking events left this season. Zhang moves up to a career-high 12.
The next tournament is the non-ranking World Masters in Saudi Arabia (this is the one with the stupid golden ball thing), starting on 4th of March and featuring the top 8 in the world, plus 2 wild cards.

Watching some clips of the Saudi Arabia tournament felt like watching a snooker match from the 80s and early 90s.
Despite how gimmicky it is - the golden ball is something different. Must be very distracting though.

There was also a last-minute change to the format with John Higgins and Ding Junhui flying out and the tournament becoming a 12-man field instead of 10. Higgins actually potted 15 reds, 15 blacks during his win over Mark Williams but missed the yellow.
My biggest issue with the golden ball from a practical standpoint would be its potential to make for awkward cueing on a shot if the cue ball is at the baulk end of the table. Thankfully, it's removed once a 147 is no longer possible. It would be interesting to see if anyone brings it into play before a ball is potted and actually manages to get a snooker behind it.

To be fair, it was a good effort on the yellow - given where the cue ball finished right next to the yellow at an acute angle. It was quite funny seeing the interview afterwards with only about a dozen or so in the crowd staying behind.
That's what I mean by the golden ball being distracting. It looks awkward enough during the break off when the players are having to almost bridge over the golden ball and practically breathing on it. Makes for a good TV shot I guess.

Quarter-finals of the World Open, taking place in China:
Judd Trump v Kyren Wilson Jackson Page v Elliot Slessor Hossein Vafaei v Ding Junhui Neil Robertson v Barry Hawkins

World Open quarter-finals: Judd Trump 5-2 Kyren Wilson Jackson Page 5-2 Elliot Slessor Hossein Vafaei 0-5 Ding Junhui Neil Robertson 5-2 Barry Hawkins
Semi-finals: Judd Trump v Jackson Page Ding Junhui v Neil Robertson
Robertson needs to win the tournament to secure his place at the World Championship, otherwise he will have to go through qualifying. This week's results mean Tom Ford has secured automatic World Championship qualification for the first time ever. Barry Hawkins' run to the quarters ensures his Crucible spot and means Jack Lisowski will have to qualify. Robert Milkins will get the last automatic Crucible spot unless Robertson wins this week, or Page wins and goes on a run at the Tour Championship.
John Higgins is currently holding on to the final Tour Championship place and can only miss out if Robertson or Page win the World Open.
We should get the draw for the World Championship qualifiers next week though they may have to delay it if Jackson Page wins the World Open as the rankings of those involved would be dependent on his performance at the Tour Championship.
