The Flying Pickets version was number 1 on the day I was born I didn't know that you are a little younger than me.

Only You would be very high up in mine.

I have to admit I like the Flying Pickets' version of Only You. A stripped down cover of a recent hit was a very unusual thing to do at the time, and they certainly past the "a cover should be distinctly different from the original" test.
I wonder what Yazoo thought of it?

84 I'm So Excited – The Pointer Sisters
It wasn't until I did these lists that I realised how many Pointer sisters songs I liked, I became aware of them first i think on the soundtrack to Beverley Hill Cop but this also featured in a hit movie National Lampoon's Vacation. It is probably most well known now for being a favourite X factor song that nearly always gets played when people get put through to Boot camp. It reached #9 in the US and #11 in the UK. Do you have this in the right year, I thought it was 1984 or was it a re-issue then?

I just looked it up. Originally reached #30 in the USA in 1982. So low I didn't notice it. Reached #9 in the USA in a remix in 1984 when it also was a top 20 hit in the UK.

79 She Blinded Me With Science - Thomas Dolby
I must admit I prefer his 90s music to his oddball early 80s stuff but anybody who gets Magnus Pyke in their video can't be ignored. I always thought this was a hit at the time but it only reached #49 here but it was his biggest hit in the US reaching #5.

78 Someone Somewhere (In Summertime) - Simple Minds
I had thought about entering Simple Minds into Hit Factor but after U2 struggling and Depeche Mode underachieving doubt their would be much point. Another single taken from 'New Gold Dream' it only reached #36. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUedmyr2G0M

77 The Mighty Wah! - The Story Of The Blues (Part 1)
This song has quite a few fans on Haven as I remember it doing very well in the retro chart. It is also quite hard to find as none of their music is on Spotify or download services. The best song by far by Liverpools finest Pete Wylie. A very big hit it reached #3 in the UK

76 I.G.Y. – Donald Fagen
This might be a bit of a curveball, I discovered Steely Dan and Donald Fagen through Dave Lee Travis of all people, he used to play this song all the time. I just think its just so classy. I think this will have been a big influence on a band that could top one of my lists later on. From the album 'Nightfly' the single reached #26 in the US.

75 Ever So Lonely – Monsoon feat. Sheila Chandra
Now we have a song that may be looking back to an ethnic sound but it is also very ahead of its time as well, it really wouldn't take much to make this a current hit, it even has a feature. Seriously though there must be remixes of this, ahh of course Jakatta did a version. This track reached #12 in 1982.

74 Back On The Chain Gang - Pretenders
Only entry for Pretenders in 1982 but we will see them a few more times I'm sure. This reached #17 in the UK.

73 I Love Rock 'n’ Roll - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
Now we have a real rock classic covered so many times usually very badly. This was her first big hit with her new band, I'm sure if i did a 70s list The Runaways - Cherry Bomb would do very well. This was number one all over the world but peaked at #4 in the UK.

72 All Of My Heart – ABC
First of three entries in 1982 for ABC taken from the faultless album 'The Lexicon Of Love'. ABC had an amazing hit rate in 1982 with all three singles going top 6 in the UK, this gorgeous ballad reached #5 but unlike the other two songs wasn't a hit in the US.

71 Stool Pigeon – Kid Creole And The Coconuts
This was one of my big favourites at the time even though i didn't actually know what a stool pigeon was but it sounded bad! I guess this theme was revisited 10 years later with Snow - Informer hehe The exciting thing about Kid Creole is they mixed so many different sounds this kind of Cab Calloway meets hip hop. It reached #7 in the UK

70 You Can't Hurry Love - Phil Collins
Another song which I think did really well here, it just kind of found itself this high though, it maybe should be lower. This reached #1 in the UK and #10 in the US. Yeh its not doing anything for me today.

69 I Don't Wanna Dance – Eddie Grant
This must be one of the most diverse batches yet, this was another video that was always on TV in 1982. This reggae classic spend 3 weeks at number one in November 1982 and also reached #53 in the US.

My #1 of the year has already appeared in your chart.
I think Simple Minds would struggle in Haven Factor for having not enough good enough songs. My favourite Simple Minds song is Alive & Kicking. That reached #1 in my chart and #2 in Haven's combi-chart.
Their songs could individually of course be used for some kind of rock-idol contest.

My # 1 of 1982 was a big hit, but almost everybody dislikes this song now.

68 Today - Talk Talk
One of the 80s band that I have always loved is Talk Talk, they are just so atmospheric and they just make perfect pop songs. This was their 3rd single and first top 40 hit reaching #14 in the UK

67 Theme from Harry's Game - – Clannad
Keeping the atmospheric pop going with probably the most atmospheric band ever. Clannad are the folk group that all others will be compared. Don't think i ever watched the show this track was made for but don't think that mattered as you just couldn't avoid it at the time. This reached #5 in the UK and #2 in Ireland. We will hear more from them soon.
