***********************NUMBER 9************************
The La's - There She Goes
A new style of indie music was coming that was using sounds of the 60s and with a bit of psychedelic influence. The first hint of what would become Brit Pop was this song. It really was like nothing else on the radio, it sounded like your dads music but it was also something new and exciting. Is it that guitar riff or the simple melody and chorus but if this is where Indie is heading, I am expecting it to invade the charts!! It woudl eventually reach #13 in 1990, making #59 in 1988. It even got to #49 in the US.

Deacon Blue - Real Gone Kid
Deacon Blue are back with a new album in 1988 and they are aiming for the stadium and the top of the charts. Everything has been turned up and this was one of the catchiest pop/rock songs of 1988. It was played absolutely everywhere and I probably did get a little sick of it but I did love the 12" mix which they played at our Village discos. Anyway Deacon Blue have properly arrived and are now the biggest band in Scotland, you try and get tickets for their gigs now!! It reached #8 in the UK and just saw a number one in Spain, nice!

Cheap Trick - The Flame
Its power ballad time haven't had one for awhile. The band were reluctant to use this song as they normally performed their own music, it was meant for Elkie Brooks, but it was still customary for returning US rock bands to have big power ballads written for them so they eventually agreed. This was a great decision as it gave them their biggest ever hit in the US where it reached number one, also in Australia and Canada. Its story in the UK was some what different, thanks to the fact the only radio station that was playing it was Atlantic 252 it became a bit of a cult song and spend a massive 14 weeks in the top 100 never getting higher than 77. Bruno Brookes revealed at the time that it was now the biggest selling song never to make the top 40, a record it held until the download era, and if it had had all its first 10 weeks of sales in one week, it would have been a top 10 hit. It was also a staple of all those rock compilations at the time so I think many people in the UK actually thought it had been a hit. Anyway I loved it a masterclass in power ballad creation.

The Adventures - Broken Land
A band from Ireland finally had their dues paid. They released many great singles but none managed to grab the public attention enough to give them a top 40 hit until this song about 'The Troubles'. So many people related to this song and it was actually the most played song on Radio 1 in 1988. Not being much of a lyric guy I never really got the message at the time, I just loved the whole sound. It reached #20 in the UK.

***********************NUMBER 5************************
INXS - New Sensation
Two bands vied for my attention of favourite band of 1988, they were Deacon Blue and INXS, both had perfect albums and I still play them both today. Our school was funny as even those two bands were considered bands that girls like. What can you do, so much macho and fake metal love in our school. Anyway I was not scared to show my love of INXS and wore their T-Shirts with pride. This is one of the most pop moments on 'Kick' and it reached #3 in the Us and just #25 in the UK. They really struggled with breaking that top 20.

Midnight Oil - Beds Are Burning
But in this list being compiled in 2017, they don't have the biggest song by an Australian act. This song I didn't miss the message at all. This really is just perfection and such unlikely hit in 1988 but it showed that if rock bands wrote a great song they woudl be rewarded by the public sometimes. It really did get a bit overplayed though hence why I preferred 'Dead Heart' at the time but you cant deny its the classic now. It reached #6 in the UK and #17 in the US.

Just three songs left, one band from England, one from Scotland and another from US. All three songs were re-issued at some point.

Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine
In 1988 I was quite ready for them yet, I tended to avoid the heavier side of rock but this was something different and after listening to my sisters album I realised how catchy many of these songs were and by 1989 I was a total fan. In fact I met by first girlfriend through my GNR T-shirt, we only lasted 4 days, guess that would be 2 dates these days but you have to start somewhere. Anyway I was listening to more rock now but this band were just another level. This is probably their most famous song and it woudl eventually be a huge hit in the UK as well as the US. It reached number one in the US in 1988, their only number one surprisingly and on re-issue in 1989 it would get to #6 in the UK.

Deacon Blue - Dignity
In 1988 they woudl eventually have a hit with their signature song. A rerecorded Bob Clearmountain production it somehow makes the song even more epic. Its interesting hearing this version again as I have only really heard the more downbeat album version over the last twenty years. It still isn't the hit it really deserved as it only makes #31 but it sold them a lot of albums and made them the biggest live band in Scotland. What song that can be left that is more magical than this?

***********************NUMBER ONE************************
Prefab Sprout - Cars and Girls
Well there you go my favourite song of 1988. Did anyone see that coming? Narrowly missing the top in 1984 they do it 1988. There was many chart travesties in 1988 but this missing the top 40 was the biggest. It is my favourite Prefab Sprout song and it for me it is pop perfection. It has every element I love in 80s pop. I must have totally worn away my 7" copy of this song. Ironically in 1988 all I wanted more than anything was a girl, wasn't fussed about a car. I guess I was coming to the end of listening to songs based on The American Dream and that imaginary Brat pack lifestyle that I dreamed of. It reached #44 in the UK.

ok with 1989 coming soon here are the 10 songs that just miss the top 100. 1989 was one of my favourite years in my life and has probably the most varied music so far as the sound of the 80s has really changed. 110 Baby I Don't Care – Transvision Vamp109 Me, Myself And I – De La Soul 108 Wheels Of Wonder – Kevin McDermott Orchestra 107 Thrill Has Gone – Texas 106 I Want It All - Queen 105 Lazyitis - Happy Mondays 104 Ride On Time – Black Box 103 Janie's Got A Gun – Aerosmith 102 Could Have Told You So – Halo James 101 I Don't Know Why I Love You – The House of Love <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="6.899999999999977" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 6.9px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 5px; top: 245px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_22998149" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="6.899999999999977" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 6.9px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 473px; top: 245px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_82901219" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="6.899999999999977" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 6.9px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 5px; top: 532px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_90597004" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="6.899999999999977" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 6.9px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 473px; top: 532px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_75026900" scrolling="no"></iframe>

ok a duplicate song in the top 100 so have to move everyone up one so that means we start with this 100 Fisherman's Blues - The Waterboys
Taken from the only Waterboys album I ever bought, not even sure why again I think I blame Radio 1 for brainwashing me with this song. My favourite DJ on radio 1 at the time was Nicky Campbell but because I was in Skye I was probably listening to more Radio Scotland so that wouldn't have helped either. This even more Celtic sound for them reached #32 in the UK. <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="6.899999999999977" style="position: absolute; width: 10.600000000000023px; height: 6.899999999999977px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none;left: 5px; top: 181px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_84732571" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="6.899999999999977" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 6.9px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 473px; top: 181px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_46184201" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="6.899999999999977" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 6.9px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 5px; top: 468px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_27479581" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="6.899999999999977" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 6.9px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 473px; top: 468px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_45146589" scrolling="no"></iframe>

99 Hit The Ground – The Darling Buds
Following The Primitives again, The Darling Buds finally crack the top 40 with their most pop song yet. Sadly it will remain their only top 40 hit reaching #27 in the UK. She looks nice in this video as well.

98 Dream Kitchen – Frazier Chorus
This is an odd one. I never liked Frazier Chorus as much as I felt i was supposed to, they really were very critically acclaimed at the time but this is probably their most famous song. This reached #57 in the UK and random fact the singer is Martin Freeman's brother.

97 Straight Up - Paula Abdul
Now this song and Paula herself have really dropped down my lists. Think this was actually a number one in my chart so should really be in the top 30 but it hasn't aged that well. If you ever listened to Atlantic 252 you were never more than 30 mins from another Paula Abdul song. This was a US number one and reached #3 in the UK.

96 Big Area – Then Jerico
Then Jerico return in 1989 with a massive single which I think we all thought was going to finally place them among the top rock bands in the UK but apart from the success of this song it didn't really happen. I blame the hair metal invasion more than anything, this rock was just not rock enough for 1989. Shame as they were almost the proto-Muse with this. This reached #13 in the UK.

95 Like Princes Do - Diesel Park West
Another band that was out of step with tends were Diesel Park West, too late to join bands like Big Country, Echo and The Alarm but too early to be part of Brit Pop. Indie was all about dancing in 1989 and DPW were really out of step. They had so many class singles like this though. This reached #58 in the UK.

94 Rocket – Def Leppard
Yes it was all about rock like this or indie dance/madchester in 1989 not inbetween. A sixth single of the very milked 'Hysteria' album, this one is no classic but still made #15 in the UK and #12 in the US.

93 Trouble Me – 10,000 Maniacs
One of my favourite bands that you tended to here on Saturday afternoon on Radio 1, think it was Richard Skinner also Bryan Burnett on Radio Clyde. Natalie Merchant is one of the best singers ever. This reached #77 in the UK and #44 in the US.

92 Runnin' Down A Dream – Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers
There is another song to come of this Jeff Lynne produced album, he really could do no wrong for me in this era. This peaked at #55 in the UK and #23 in the Us.
