71 I Drove All Night – Cyndi Lauper
Cyndia Lauper returns in 1989 with this big rock track, it was definitely the right song for her at the time as the charts were filling up with so much pop/rock and hair metal. It is also 100x better than the Roy Orbison version, which I really can't stand. This song peaked at #6 in the US and #7 in the UK.

70 Requiem – London Boys
Ok some explanation required for this. Our village discos especially when I was in Skye played lots of really good music, it wasn't a wall of cheese but sometimes some special cheese slipped through. That band were The London Boys!! I just loved them so much and they remind me of that brilliant Summer of 1989 as much as The Stone Roses. I think nearly every girl I dated or was close to in 1989 danced with me to London Boys at some point lol This was their debut hit and it eventually reached #4 in the UK, it seemed to take forever to become a hit. I had already become a fan of hi-nrg from Euro holidays and I followed the chart in Record Mirror so was so happy when these guys broke through.

Loved The London Boys - preferred this to London Nights.
They had 3 or 4 smaller hits which should have been much bigger.
This has just put me in the right mood as we prepare to watch THE match!

69 Free Fallin' – Tom Petty
Probably his most famous song in the UK and it was great you was finally getting a little of the success over here that he had for years in the US. It still only reached #59 here but it has been very popular on downloads/streaming and has gone silver here since. It reached #7 in the US.

68 Dressed For Success – Roxette
One of the biggest new bands on radio in 1989 especially Atlantic 252 were Roxette, they had so many big hits in my chart in 1989. Their 2nd hit of 'Look Sharp' it reached #14 in the US but missed the 40 peaking at #46 here but would reach #18 when re-issued next year.

67 When I See You Smile – Bad English
I had lost track of John Waite since his mega hit 'Missing You' and have caught up with his career since but Bad English was the return for me. When I heard the song for the first time his voice was instantly recognisable. This awesome power ballad was so obviously a Diane Warren composition as well and was lapped up by US radio and was a US chart topper. Did not do so well here again only getting Atlantic 252 airplay it reached #61.

66 Chains – The River Detectives
A new band from Scotland now who made one of the albums of the year and kind of where The Proclaimers it was ok to like. This single and band were promteley heaving by Bryan Burnett on Radio Clyde and reached #51 in the Uk chart.

65 W.F.L. – Happy Mondays
I have to admit I wasn't ready for this 1989 and didn't get it but when I started going to clubs in 1990, it made much more sense. Originally out in 1988 this new Vince Clarke remix reached #68 and #3 in the Indie chart.

63 Leave a Light On – Belinda Carlisle
First new single of her brand new album 'Runaway Horses' and if its not broke don't fix it. Its another soaring pop/rock anthem that she just does so well. It reached #4 in the UK and #11 in the US.

62 New York Minute – Don Henley
After making one of my favourite songs ever I was glad to rediscover Don Henley again with his 'End Of The Innocence' album and this was one of the stand out tracks, so atmospheric. It reached #48 in the US but its not really a single to be fair. www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8y9hwFxvkQ

61 Queen Of The New Year – Deacon Blue
This for me was the last really good Deacon Blue single, yes they were good after this and had their moments but this was the last really high point. It always makes me feel so good love a bit of Cajun feel. Yes a track that the Hooters would have been jealous of. It reached #21 in the UK.

60 Rooms On Fire – Stevie Nicks
After the brilliant 'Tango In The Night', Stevie Nicks returns with one of her best solo singles ever and it remains her biggest hit in the UK where it reached #16 and the same position in the US.

While we wait for Haven Factor a couple of bonuses
59 Baby, I Love Your Way/Freebird – Will To Power
I was already familiar with both these song especially 'Freebird' but this US pop hit just did something different we these two classic rock anthems. Now the trend of slowing down rock songs has really got out of hand but here it works as its still fast enough to shimmy to along to. A huge hit on US radio, not surprisingly, it peaked at number one there and eventually got to #6 here after a lot of Atlantic 252 brainwashing.

58 The Real McCoy – The Silencers
Still one of my favourite bands they will have a few more hits in 1989. 'A Blues for Buddhal' was such a strong followup album to their brillaint 1987 debut but Uk success still denied to them luckily France kept them in beer money. This reached #81 in the UK www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNJx8ar1wjA

57 One – Metallica
Hmmm ok up until this point I did not get thrash metal or the love for Metallica but this song just changed everything, these guys are actually damn talented musicians. The absolutely captivating video showing the suffering of WW1 survivors just added even more menace and chills to this spooky song. Eveyrthing about this song is just brilliant, I love the guitars so much. It is giving me chills already and we are barely a minute in. This was their second top 20 reaching #13 in the UK and #35 in the US.

56 Every Rose Has Its Thorn - Poison
On almost the other side of the metal industry were Poison, who specialised in frat boy sexist hair metal songs but again they could be good and this brilliant ballad proved there was more to them than cheeky lyrics. It was a unwritten rule in 1989 that every rock band had one song like this on their album as US radio would lap it up. This song was no exception as it gave them a US number one and it reached #13 here.

55 Voices Of Babylon – The Outfield
Never getting the dues they deserved in the UK, The Outfield release one last brilliant single to UK indifference as usual. This is arguably their best single full stop as it has more of a YES/Rush influence than their previous singles moving away from their old Policesque sound. It was also a bit Bee Gees I guess but it was just a big anthem with again fantastic production. It reached #25 in the US and #78 in the UK.

54 London Nights – London Boys
Here we go again, its more London Boys. Yes I know its so wrong. But for some reason we all loved these guys as this song reached #2 in the charts. But I loved that album so much.

53 If I Could Turn Back Time – Cher
Cher returns and she continues with the rock style which has been doing so well for her lately. This probably her most epic yet, it could have been a Bon Jovi or Heart song. Well guess what Diane Warren strikes again. It was a huge worldwide hit, it reached #3 in the US and #6 in the UK.
