The commentators mentioned we all love the underdog in the Iceland game, not when they park the bus and are just really really boring I don't, give me Peru any day who played some lovely attacking football. Some of us like Iceland they're like my 2nd team! (hence wanting to see all their games). Of course that might have something to do with Gylfi Sig playing for them... And the only country which includes a Reading player, Bodvarsson.. even if it doesn't appear he is in the picture atm, surprising as I'm sure he scored in the 2nd half of last year for them and scored in the Euros. Thought Gylfi did OK, which given that he was out injured for the last two months of the season is impressive. Still dont think Iceland's style particularly suits him though. Game for me was OK to watch, and with mrh in terms of qualifying. They shouldn't fear either Croatia or Nigeria, think they have to beat Nigeria though.

| | | | 0-1 | Cionek (og) 37 | | 0-2 | Niang 60 | Krychowiak 86 | 1-2 | |
Losing starts for the two highest ranked teams in the group as Colombia are made to pay for playing most of the game against 10 men against Japan. Poland were particularly poor against Senegal though the winning goal was somewhat controversial as Niang ran through to score literally seconds after being waved back onto the pitch after receiving treatment. Colombia's loss means only 2 of the 8 quarter-finalists from 2014 have won their opening game this time. Emptying the dishwasher was more interesting than that 1st half with Russia and Egypt.

The commentator said it was only the 3rd time we have won our opening game. I make it the 5th time. 1970 1-0 vs Romania 1982 3-1 vs France 1998 2-0 vs Tunisia 2006 1-0 vs Paraguay 2018 2-1 vs Tunisia Yeah that confused me as I read sometime last week I think it was that our record was 5 in 14 World Cups. Assumed that was correct so didn't check it so having seen this post I'm still confused...

An easy win in the end for Russia after a very good second half performance. Russia will be through to the last 16 if Saudi Arabia fail to beat Uruguay tomorrow. A Uruguay win would also see them through. Pos | Team | Pld | GD | Pts | 1 | | 2 | +7 | 6 | 2 | | 1 | +1 | 3 | 3 | | 2 | -3 | 0 | 4 | | 1 | -5 | 0 |

Since 1966, a list of all the teams that have: - won their first group game but failed to get through the group
- lost their first group game but did get through the group
In 1998 it didn't happen at all. In 1986, 1990 and 1994, 3 teams qualified from 4 out of 6 groups making the latter more likely and the former less likely, but the former still happened twice.
1966: Won first game but didn't qualify: Brazil, Italy lost first game but did qualify: Hungary, North Korea
In 1966, 3 of the groups saw the two teams that eventually qualified play each other in the first game.
1970; won but didn't qualify: Belgium
1974 won but didn't qualify: Scotland, Italy lost but did qualify: Argentina
1978: won but didn't qualify: Tunisia
1982: won but didn't qualify: Algeria, Hungary, Scotland lost but did qualify: West Germany, Argentina, USSR, France
1986: won but didn't qualify: Portugal lost but did qualify: Belgium, Spain, England,
1990: lost but did qualify: Argentina, Yugoslavia
1994: won but didn't qualify: Norway lost but did qualify: Bulgaria, Italy, Mexico, Saudi Arabia
1998: no occurrences either way.
2002: won but didn't qualify: Costa Rica, Argentina Lost but did qualify: Turkey
2006; won but didn't qualify: Czech Republic, South Korea lost but did qualify: Ghana, Ukraine
2010: won but didn't qualify: Slovenia, Switzerland lost but did qualify: Spain
2014: won but didn't qualify: Ivory Coast, Italy lost but did qualify: Uruguay, Greece, Algeria
Spain went on to win after losing their first game, while West Germany (1982), Argentina (1990) and Italy (1994) reached the final after losing theirs. A few teams appear on both sides of this.

Four goals so far for Ronaldo, none for the rest of the Portugal squad. What is the most goals a player has scored in a major tournament before one of his team-mate has scored?

An improved performance by Saudi Arabia against the once again lacklustre Uruguay but it's not enough to save themselves and Egypt from elimination. Russia and Uruguay are both through to the last 16 and will face each other to see who finishes top. Portugal revert to their 2016 type, doing just about enough to beat Morocco, who are the first team eliminated. Iran put up a battling performance against Spain but miss out due to a somewhat fortunate goal. Spain go top based on disciplinary record. France qualify for the last 16 without doing a great deal. Peru are out having played pretty well across two games. Australia stay alive thanks to another penalty but need to beat Peru and hope Denmark lose to France.
