I'm going to the England-Spain game next Saturday so was particularly interested to see the England squad announced today.
Loftus-Cheek gets in despite not playing for Chelsea. But it's the keepers that stand out. Alex McCarthy called up is good to see, expected that with the injuries to Heaton and Pope. But didn't expect to see Butland keep his place over Hart when he's now playing in the Championship.

...didn't expect to see Butland keep his place over Hart when he's now playing in the Championship. Hart's conceded 7 goals in the past two games against the phenomenal goalscoring machines of Watford and Fulham. He doesn't look reliable to me. Butland is a decent 'keeper, and I would have been disappointed to see him dropped, just because he stuck with a relegated club. Enjoy the match. Could be a good game.

Newcastle were robbed of a penalty though at 2-1 as Forest went down the other end and made it 3-1... Yeah that should have been a penalty and Perez was quite rightly incensed at the decision not to award it. Rafa was trying to calm him down but it didn't work.

Finally in Newcastle related news, now that Wonga have gone into administration that is three organisations who have sponsored Newcastle that have bit the dust in the last decade and a bit - ntl, Northern Rock and Wonga. We are even the kiss of death for cable companies and financial institutions!

Shame it's only rich idiots at small clubs that seem to suffer... Robin what do you make of what is going on at County? Sack Nolan who took you to the playoffs, and then be looking to replace him with Kewell from Crawley who's win ratio is woeful to say the least! Discovered today that the commentator Darren Fletcher is the Notts County vice-chairman! I knew his radio career started in the area but is he a fan?
Actually, whilst double-checking where his career started I've discovered that he left yesterday following Kewell's arrival.

Just discovered we've signed a 21 year old Iranian international who played in the World Cup, Saeid Ezatolahi. I didn't see any of their World Cup games, just highlights. Anyone remember him?

Sadly the decision to sack Nolan was the right decision. We’ve been very poor since January and Nolan has been looking like a broken man in recent weeks. More time wouldn’t have made any difference, he’d clearly lost it! Kewell is a very odd decision and Notts fans don’t really know what to think. I guess we’ll just have to give him time. Promotion is already looking like a write off for this season. As for Fletcher, I think he’s a Forest fan. No loss!

European automatic qualifiers for the Women's World Cup are now decided: ENGLAND SCOTLAND NORWAY SWEDEN GERMANY ITALY SPAINIn the playoffs: Netherlands Switzerland Belgium Denmark Runners-up who are eliminated: Iceland Wales Austria Scotland qualify for the first time with a win over Albania which saw them leapfrog Switzerland, who could only draw 0-0 with Poland. England beat Kazakhstan 6-0 in their final game to extend their unbeaten run in World Cup qualifiers to 16 years. With Holland and Denmark in the playoffs, both of last year's European Championship finalists could potentially miss out on the World Cup, along with semi-finalists Austria.

What’s the Nation’s League? Is it a new name for the European Championships? If so it’s a sh*t name.

What’s the Nation’s League? Is it a new name for the European Championships? If so it’s a sh*t name. No, it's a new competition that's intended to be a replacement for friendlies. All the European teams are split into 4 tiers with each tier split into 4 groups. There's promotion and relegation between the tiers and the final positions will be used to determine the playoff teams when Euro 2020 qualifying ends next year. (The main Euro qualifying tournament will now begin in March.) The 4 group winners from the top tier will play a mini tournament next summer to determine the overall Nations League champions.

Ah thanks for that, I was confused. However it really sounds like a waste of time. I won’t bother watching

That will explain why it feels like a friendly then.

Thanks for the explanation. I read an article during the week which didn't explain it as well as i'd have hoped. This simplified version does the job
The article did say I think that you can qualify for the European Championships via the Nations League making the qualifying campaign basically redundant?

The qualifying campaign isn't totally redundant as it still determines the 20 automatic qualifiers. The highest placed teams from the Nations League who don't qualify for the Euros will then go into the playoffs, with 4 teams per league battling for 1 qualifying place per league. That means there will be at least 1 team from League D (the 16 bottom ranked teams) at Euro 2020. So the 16 group winners from this Nations League will go into the Euro qualifiers knowing they are guaranteed a playoff place at the very least.

Meanwhile, UEFA plan to introduce a third European club competition from 2021: www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/45483586Maybe this third competition could be just for the winners of the domestic cups? Then it would be a cup for cup winners... or even: a cup winners' cup.
