59 Blink 182 - Enema Of The State
The spirit of MTV2 continues. We will be hearing a lot more of this genre when we do the 00s album list but for now we need to settle with the breakthrough album from Blink 182. This their third album broke them worldwide thanks mostly to the videos for 'All The Small Things' and 'Whats My Age Agfain'. 'Dude Ranch' is a good album as well but didn't make the cut this time. This record and on eother still come, has made me a life long fan of pop punk and that will never change. The album reached #9 in the US and #15 in the Uk and sold 15 million copies worldwide quite impressive as we are now in Napster time in 1999.

58 Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible
I have taken so long to update this as I didn't know how to approach this record but to 'This Is My Truth' every Manic Street Preachers song I owned was a single. I had every one from 'Motown Junk' onwards so I never got to appreciate how good 'Holy Bible' was at the time, I only really loved 'La Tristesse Durera' at the time. Now after many years of having it pummelled down me that it it is their best album, which I still don't think, I know rank it number two but out of actual plays, it would not be in my top 5. But really I do really like it know, seriously why didn't i love 'Faster' even at the time, really weird. maybe one day it will be my favourite like every other 'cool' person. This album reached #6 in 1994.

57 Gene - Olympian
Gene were another band that I loved from their first single, they were a bit like the Smiths but they were dreamier and lighter. I don't think there has been ever a Gene song i don't like but these first two albums were just brilliant especially their debut which didn't even feature 'For The Dead'. They have also aged much better than a lot of Brit Pop with a more timeless 80s sound being the reason. Their debut album reached #8 in 1995.

56 Soundgarden - Superunknown
The definitive Soundgarden and one of the top 10 grunge albums of all time. I really think this album maybe too low or I have overrated 'Nevermind' but its still a very good placing. Every single on this is a classic and even the album tracks are all a very high standard. Honestly if nobody had heard grunge before I woudl probably nominate this album to someone before Nirvana purely as it is more accessible overall, even 'Nevermind' is very heavy and punky in places. Chris Cornell is also argubably the best grunge vocalist as well. Not surprisingly this was a US number one and reached #4 in the Uk and sold over 5 million worldwide most of those sales in the Us mind you.

55 Dubstar - Disgraceful
Now some pop and how much did I love this band. They were like a cross between St Etienne and Pulp to me, combining the 60s influenced dance pop with kitchen sink stories and melancholic lyrics. She was a gorgeous and brilliant frontwoman and I even managed to catch them live. I prefer them when they are dancier though, even the album version of 'Stars' is too slow for me preferring the dance mix. I honestly played this album to death at the time, Their debut album reached #30 in 1995.

54 Smashing Pumpkins - Gish
Now for an album I didn't hear at the time and I only bought it in the last 2 years although I did buy 'I Am One' at the time. This album has flown up my list but as it doesn't have that personal feeling that many of these higher up records have, it is struggling. I know it is brilliant but I just don't know it inside out yet. After playing all their 90s album, there is even a case for this album being better than 'Infinite Sadness' as that record is maybe a bit too long. This was their debut album and it went unnoticed at first by many others as well only reaching #146 in the US in 1991 but it has achieved platinum status since.

53 Pixies -Bossanova
One of the oldest records on the list and also one of the first I bought, the wife had the two albums previous so that worked out hehe. No way is this as good as 'Doolittle' but it is still a brilliant record and the best moments like 'Dig For Fire' are total classics. The album reached #70 in the us and #3 in the UK, yes that surprised me as well. in 1990.

52 U2 - Achtung Baby
By far U2's best album of the 90s and probably my 2nd favourite of them all. Like many I wasnt convinced by 'The Fly' but when I heard the rest of the album and the later singles, I was sold. It just does not let go from 'Zoo Station'. U2 really succeeded in going dance especially on 'Even Better Than The Real Thing'. But it wasnt all space age disco rock, there was soem of their best ballads and slow songs as well. Just a brilliant album. The album was number oen everywhere in 1991 and has sold over 10 million worldwide.

So which album just misses the top 50 albums of the 90s, there was about 5 albums fighting for these last spots and by a whisker this record just missed out.
51 Radiohead - The Bends
My favourite Radiohead album and it also has my favourite Radiohead song so no surprises (erm) that it is this high. I'm sorry but i am one of those they were better when they rocked people although I love 'Ok Computer' as well but, they just went to far in the 00s. Just an epic album and I dont understand why it underachieved so much in the US, they really should have been even bigger after 'Creep' with this record. It reached #4 in the Uk and #88 in the US in 1995-1996.

Before the top 50 we will have a few spoilers or clues.
Only two bands have 3 albums in the top 50, I am sure at least one of those is obvious, and 7 bands have 2 albums on the list to come.
22 albums are Brit Pop or Indie 20 albums are rock or alt rock 5 albums are dance or electronic 3 albums are from singer/songwriters
8 acts have not appeared on the list at all so far and two of those will be in the top 5!

50 Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication
This the 7th album from them marked a change in style from them which would carry on through most of the 00s and it is probably their most chilled record which fits the theme. It is also their most successful selling 15 million copies in the US alone. I would rank it as my 3rd favourite Chilis album. Some Chili Peppers albums aren't great all the way through but this one certainly is. It reached #3 in the Us and #5 in the UK in 1999.

49 Air - Moon Safari
keeping those chilled vibes, two great records for a Sunday morning so far. I was already into French dance music at this point with Daft Punk and Cassius but Air came along and did something quite different although it was kinda similar to Bjork and Trip Hop. Just very classy music. Some brilliant pop as well like 'Kelly Watch The Stars', their videos were everywhere in 1998. It reached #6 in 1998. I just love this song and video so much.

48 Blur - Blur
Now a change of style. For many this is Blur's best album and for a time it was probably my favourite as well but nostalgia has returned another album of theirs to my favourite. We were not sure what we were getting when we heard 'Beetlebum' it was very classy and not cheesy and much darker with some brilliant Graham Coxon guitar and then we got 'Song 2'. Blur go grunge for the first time since 'Popscene' and make a indie disco anthem that filled the dancefloor with moshing for 2 minutes. The album pretty much continued the same vibe between indie tracks, weird ditties and moshy tracks. Definitely their most alternative record. It reached #1 in the UK and #61 in the US in 1997. That intro though!!

47 Happy Mondays - Pills 'N' Thrills And Bellyaches
This album feels like it is from a different era entirely from most of the list, being as many of these songs were released in 1989. This album I know off by heart, played it so much I know which song comes next, I just don't get that with records anymore. The album tracks on this record with the exception of 'Kinky Afro' were always better than the singles. I loved 'Gods Cop' and 'Bobs Yer Uncle' for example. The album reached #4 in the UK in 1990.

46 Suede - Coming Up
I really could not separate 'Coming Up' and 'Dog Man Star' and even after playing them both again, I still struggled to choose which was better. Although 'Coming Up' has the best single overall on it,see below, 'Dog Man Star' was the more complete record with less filler. 'Coming Up' is their mainstream album Iget that, the one where they joined the Brit Pop party properly, even though they probably started Brit Pop ahem. It is one of their more positive records. This album returned them to the number one spot in the UK and was their biggest seller, their only platinum, album in 1996.

45 Bjork - Debut
Another of those records that you just did not see coming. The first single 'Human Behaviour' was maybe not such a shock from her Sugarcubes work but much of the rest of the record was. Just a brilliant electronic dance record, so good that Madonna copied it for 'Ray Of Light'. You can even sing 'Ray Of Light' over 'Big Time Sensuality'. We all loved Bjorks transformation in our flat at the time and this album got hammered at parties. It reached #2 in the UK and #6 in the US in 1993.

44 Fatboy Slim - You’ve Come a Long Way Baby
More dance music and its no exagerration to say I was obsessed with Fatboy Slim. Big Beat was my favourite music genre possibly ever, I just loved its blend of funk, 60s music, samples and just big catchy choruses. It and trance were my big two genres for DJing when I was on the big stage. Its not a perfect album but it was so important to me that it had to be in my top 50. Also I can live without ever hearing 'Praise You' again. It reached #1 in the UK in 1998 and #34 in the US. Is there a tune bigger than this!!??

43 Suede - Dog Man Star
Suede's darkest album and the fan favourite, it may not have as many killer singles as the other 90s records but what it misses in bangers, it makes up for in feels. Some of their most beautiful songs are on this record which feels more like the sound of Suedes early B sides, that is not an insult, their B sides on their early singles were all amazing. An amazing album but you have to be in the mood for it. It reached #3 in 1994.

42 Screaming Trees - Sweet Oblivion
We return to grunge after a bit of a gap. Screaming Trees were really underrated at the time, Mark Lanegan has since been regarded as one of the best rock voices ever. They had been going since 1986 so actually way before grunge was even coined but they became part of the grunge scene with the release of their breakthrough album 'Sweet Oblivion' in 1992. But it was still not a big seller compared to other grunge records at the time and only reached #141 in the US in 1992. They were kind of my grunge secret as nobody had heard of them, which was a real shame as this album is perfection.
