41 Garbage - Version 2.0
So what was Garbage 2.0, it was turn up the beats and the electronic side but still keep that grunge edge. they even leaned into trip hop on this record which they would dip even further into on the next record but really they were even more pop and accessible than the debut record especially with songs like 'Special'. It was great having them on Haven Factor as it reminded me how much I loved them and this so nearly was higher. It reached #1 in the UK and #13 in the US in 1998.

40 Beck - Odelay
Beck had been one of those names you read in Melody Maker without knowing what he sounded like, then he had a massive worldwide hit with 'Loser' and I think we all thought he woudl just be another one hit wonder and then 'Odelay' came along. The first single 'Where It's at' was very classy and hinted that this album could be something special, and it had that Tarantino vibe which was so trendy at the time but the singles jsut got better from then on. The album is just brilliant and critics agreed, it was NME's album of the year in 1997 and won several grammies. The Dust Brothers production still sounds so fresh. From this record Beck has carved out a career which has outlasted many of his 90s alt rock rivals, with a brilliant single out now. The album reached #16 in the US and #17 in the UK.

39 REM - Monster
This was an album many of us where crying out for REM returning to the rock of albums like 'Green' or 'Document' and yes 'Monster' is quite grungey but it is still very much a mainstream 90s REM record as shone by snogs like 'Strange Currencies'. This album is an album of two halves and side 1 is vastly superior to side 2 but its REM, and they still have two records to come, which I am sure you would have guessed by now. But it was great playing this one again especially 'Bang And Blame which drips of 'One I Love'. For me this was their last essential album and it reached #1 in the UK and US in 1994.

38 Ash - 1977
The US didn't get it all their way. Time for a story about Ash, I bought their debut single 'Jack Named The Planets' in Fopp in a B&W foldout sleeve and I was sure they were an obscure US indie band, I had heard them on Steve Lamacq teh night before but never heard where they were from. I would never have predicted that in a short time they would produce one of the best debut albums of the 90s but also be from Northern Ireland. Count the singles on this album its like a Greatest Hits, just banger after banger, think there is 9 singles on the long version of the album on Spotify!! From the indie floor fillers like 'Girl From Mars' and 'Oh Yeah' to the punk of 'Kung Fu', just a fun, rocking party record. The album reached #1 in 1997 in the UK and we will feature this Brit rock anthem. <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="6.899999999999977" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 6.9px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 5px; top: 165px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_76973120" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="6.899999999999977" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 6.9px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 473px; top: 165px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_33108862" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="6.899999999999977" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 6.9px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 5px; top: 452px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_66160347" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="6.899999999999977" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 6.9px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 473px; top: 452px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_57829933" scrolling="no"></iframe>

37 Manic Street Preachers - Generation Terrorists
Another band that I was with from just about the beginning. I remember the first time I heard 'Motown Junk' which isn't on the record sadly and I was like what is that!! I was taping it of the radio, so I instantly had to rewind it and play it to everyone!! I bought the single the next day and I have been a lifelong fan of Manic Street Preachers ever since, I think I own more singles and albums by them than any other act. But anyway they were this punk band so different from the rest of my collection and the common musical bond between me and my ex. But then they did something incredible they released 'Motorcycle Emptiness', the hype was true maybe this band could take over the world and sell millions of records and as we know, although they never cracked the US, they did become on eof the biggest UK rock bands of the last 30 years. 'Generation' is still such a special record to me, I know it is bit rough and ready in places but that rawness and talent was just exploding in these guys. We havent had a band since Arctic Monkeys that had the same effect and our kids really need one, grime stars and rappers aren't enough, or maybe I cant deny that rock is over but in many ways it wasn't in great shape in 1991 either yet.

36 Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness
Maybe a surprise that this isn't the highest Smashing Pumpkins album but that's only because of one thing, it is so long. It probably has my favourite Smashing Pumpkins song on it '1979' but if it was a tighter record, it would probably be in my top 10, I also didn't buy the album at the time, the only albusm I bought at the time were 'Siamses Dream' and 'Adore' from the 90s. It was their only chart topper in the US and reached #4 in the UK and sold over 6 million worldwide.

35 Shamen - En-tact
Another record from the very start of the 90s, as already mentioned we had a common love of The Shamen in our student flat at the time, left of course by 'Progen' but my personal love was for 'Hyperreal' which sampled Evil Dead which was a film series I discovered in the same year. Almost every night out had a Shamen song in their in my early student days, so much part of my life. As for the album itself a mixture of pop dance tunes and ambient chillout it was a quality dance record. The album reached #31 in 1990. This was my first Shamen record of many. <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="6.899999999999977" style="position: absolute; width: 10.600000000000023px; height: 6.899999999999977px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none;left: 5px; top: 133px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_69553185" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="6.899999999999977" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 6.9px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 473px; top: 133px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_87554046" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="6.899999999999977" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 6.9px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 5px; top: 420px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_74796818" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="6.899999999999977" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 6.9px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 473px; top: 420px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_3843275" scrolling="no"></iframe>

34 Sheryl Crow - Tuesday Night Music Club
This maybe a surprise but I was obsessed with Sheryl Crow for a few years and the song that I got into through isnt the one you woudl think 'All I Wanna Do' wouldn't make my top 10 favourite songs on this album, no it was thsi very sexy song which actually wasn't a hit 'What I Can Do For You', I bought the album on the strength of that single, which actually cam eout first, although I don't see Wikipedia backing that up. So for an album that ranks 'All i Wanna Do' as its weaker tracks that just tells you how good this record is, country pop/rock and ballads which were just brilliant. It was just a random purchase, I would never have expected her to become the global star she did, she so easily could have been another Shawn Colvin or Jewel. The album reached #3 in the US and #8 in the UK and has sold over 5 million copies worldwide.

33 Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman
Sometimes I just wanted to hear or buy something different. I bought this album purely on its review in NME without even hearing the record, it was so passionate, it made me feel this must be the best LP ever created. Well we will settle for arguably the best dance album of the 90s. I'm not an expert on electronic music but this album just changed me so much, I think it was one of the records that made me feel I could be a working DJ one day. It is just one of those albums that when you put it on, you jsut have to let it play to the end, the vibe and atmosphere are timeless and jsut take you to a different place. This was Underworld 's first success and they are still going to this day of course. The album reached #12 in the UK in 1994.

32 Alanis Morrisette - Jagged Little Pill
When i said we had three singer songwriters, I think most of you guessed this would be one of the record still to come. Special prize of an emoji cake for the person who guesses the singer/songwriter still to come. Alanis made an instant impact on me, 'You Oughta Know' was such an angry record and let us know this was no gentle warrior like Tori Amos, she told it as it was. one of the classic breakup songs of all time, file next to Kelis 'Caught Out Here'. She was no one hit wonder as the anthems just kept coming. A brilliant pop/rock post grunge album only bettered for me in this genre by one record still to come. This her 3rd album after two pop albums which were only hits in her native Canada made worldwide slakes of over 33 million this album was a phenomenon, it reached the top in almost every country. This song still gives me chills in that chorus!

31 Embrace -The Good Will Out
I have been hard on many of their contemporaries on this list with Travis and Verve maybe too low down but its maybe that I have not had this record so overplayed as those other albums. 'All You Good Good People' is the post Brit Pop anthem for me, it is better than 'Bittersweet Symphony' so so underated in the musical history. Embrace combined the feel of those bands but they just had that magic something for me, he wasn't even a great singer. They were Oasis, Verve, Suede, Travis all in one epic band. They could only have existed when they did I think. I think Embrace need more credit for their legacy and that's why this album is so high I think. The album reached #1 in 1998. This is my favourite album of 1998!

Its not really safe for me do to much on the internet until I see GoT so lets have a few more.
30 The La's - The La's
Officially the oldest album on the list with many of these songs from the 80s and its also probably the shortest as well. The Las legacy is probably not where it should have been, I think when we talk about late 80s indie, we really should include them with The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays, they were that important its just a shame we only got this album. The Las were the first modern Brit Pop band and that should be a badge that they get credit for. This album is just full of 60s tinged indie pop and some almost skiffle like 'Doledrum' and tracks like 'Timeless Melody' which woudl have been top 5 hits if they had been released 5 years later. There is no a bad song on this album, it truly is a timeless record. The album reached #30 in 1900 in the Uk.Not going for a single lets have my favourite album track but that does change all the time.

29 Depeche Mode - Violator
This is the only record in the top 200 I didn't replay but that's because I overdosed on them when I was playing them in Haven Factor. It maybe a surprise but I wasn't really into Depeche Mode at this time, I liked them in the early 80s but was not a huge fan, that really happen until the 00s when I got into them big style thanks mostly to Napster (the legal one). I always loved 'Policy Of Truth' though , felt the other singles were overplayed. But anyway now I realise this is a total classic and is probably my 3rd favourite Depeche Mode album, it just captures the time. The album reached #2 in the Uk and #7 in the US and sold over 4 million worldwide.

28 Super Furry Animals – Radiator
Most of the albums to come are albums I owned on LP that I played to death and I still have to day. I don't have many vinyl LPs anymore maybe about 100 but the ones I do have are all pretty immaculate. This to me his Super Furry Animals best album, side one especially is just faultless. With one of their best ballaads through to ultra welsh language weirdness but all the songs have a great hooks and showed the cooler weirder side of Brit Pop. It reached #8 in 1997 and is regarded one of the ten essential albums from that label, I suspect there are a few more to come from that top 10 to follow.

27 Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque
Possibly this one even. Yes another Creation records album and the breakthrough album for the band, their 2nd full album. I bought this of the back of the epic 'Star Sign' which was an epic song, it sounded like a shoegaze version of a hymn, definitely one of the best singles to come from the band and it was another brilliant album which also took in 60s and glam influences, a great record to play before going out drinking. Kurt Cobain was quite into Scottish indie music and you can hear in the song I feature what grunge took from Scottish Indie pop. The album reached #22 in the UK in 1991

26 Charlatans - Some Friendly
Which album is the best by The Charlatans? It is hard to say but their debut just has that special magic which puts it on a different level to me. It really is a perfect record taking what The Stone Roses did an putting their own stamp on it. I think many including myself just that they were opportunist at the time and the had the perfect name, they even have a song called 'Opportunity' on the album. Well even if they were bandwagon chancers they have gon eon to be one of the best indie rock bands of the last 30 years so it was all worth it. The record also did something Stone Roses never did and went to number one in the Uk in 1990. <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="6.899999999999977" style="position: absolute; width: 10.600000000000023px; height: 6.899999999999977px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none;left: 5px; top: 149px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_31209434" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="6.899999999999977" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 6.9px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 473px; top: 149px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_50507806" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="6.899999999999977" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 6.9px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 5px; top: 436px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_89609279" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="10.600000000000023" height="6.899999999999977" style="position: absolute; width: 10.6px; height: 6.9px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 473px; top: 436px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_58981096" scrolling="no"></iframe>

25 Foo Fighters - There Is Nothing Left To Lose
Into the top 25 and we have the first big climber for a while. There are not many records in this top 25 that have three songs as good as this to launch an album. This is the newest album on the list and the singles on this are so much of MTV2 history for me that I even know the videos of my heart never mind the songs. I would say this is Foo Fighters at their commercial best, this is a full on mosh pit album. Its maybe not as dark and cool as the album that's still to come but almost every track makes you smile and many of the album tracks are perfect pop as well like the gorgeous 'Aurora'. I would love to use Foo Fighters in Haven Factor but I think they'd be too marmite, big points from the usual suspects but lots of 00s. The album reached #10 in the UK & US in November 1999. Lets have their second most famous video. This is my number one album of 1999!!

24 James - Gold Mother
I had the original release of thsi album which was quite annoying when they added the singles on the re-issue. James were definitely my favourite band in 1991 and loved every song on this album although I probably prefer 'Come Home' and 'How Was It For You?' to 'Sit Down'. The album raeched #2 on re-issue in 1991.

23 Oasis - Definitely Maybe
Well it looks like Blur won against Oasis on this list but it was much closer than expected. Can't believe how much I enjoyed this album hearing it in full again. Its not perfect but the best moments are some of the best songs of the 90s. The album tracks are nearly all amazing. Just a total classic record. It reached #1 in 1994. We still have 7 albums on Creation records to go.

22 Adorable - Against Perfection
Am I being pedantic and stubborn placing this one place above Oasis?? Yes I probably am but I don't care, its a better record. Taking shoegaze and blending it with a Brit Pop swagger, before the term was even invented. They had tunes, a charismatic frontman and they were on Creation, they should have been stars. Ok they maybe weren't as accessible as Oasis, no ballads quite on par with 'Live Forever' but these songs were for the indie disco not the terraces. But somehow Ride were getting top 10 hits with tracks like this so they should have as well. It probably didn't help that the UK release of the album missed of their 2 biggest songs but the US got them. The album reached #70 in 1993 in the UK. We will play out with the Wedding Present esque 'Homeboy'
