HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 28th SEPTEMBER 1986

Annie and Dave grab a third week at the top with Thorn In My Side as they manage to hold off another strong challenge from Five Star, with Rain Or Shine stuck in the runner up spot for a second week.




Quite a way behind the leaders, Paul Simon is up to number three with You Can Call Me Al.  Cyndi Lauper is back in the Top Five  for the first time in a couple of years as True Colors moves up to number four to become her biggest hit since her debut, Girls Just Want To Have Fun.

The Bangles also return to the Top Five with Walk Like An Egyptian, hoping to emulate the success of Manic Monday, which topped the chart for three weeks earlier this year.

The Pet Shop Boys storm into the Top Ten at number six with Suburbia. Looking to break their own record with another number one song, the odds look in their favour as they becomes their highest debut to date.

Madonna is this week’s biggest climber as True Blue shoots up a massive 32 places to number eight to become her twelfth Top Ten single.

7th and final week on top for Human (phew!) leaving Madonna at 2, Quo shooting up to 3, or Pet Shop Boys up to 7 to take over next week. Madonna had just had her first chart-topper, Pet Shop Boys 2 of 3, and Quo never ever topped my chart to date. The Monkees get a new track into the 10 for the first time ever, Paul Simon his first since Love Me Like A Rock in 1973, and The Pretenders make it 7 years of top 20's.

Highest new entry is a stonking Hi-NRG version of the Supremes You Keep Me hanging On to give Kim Wilde her first biggie in a few years, in at 32, while Paul hardcastle takes the new TOTP theme tune in at 40. Red Box are all For America (not really, it's a slagging off), and Wax are systematic at 59 - but presumably not their car is not hydromatic, nor greased lightning. Shakatak & Gary Numan are back at 71 together again, and two veterans return - James Brown, and Jackson Browne, the man who had Doctor My Eyes back in 1972 before The Jackson 5 covered it.

There are 6 new entries and they all enter between #17 and #24, but this is the highest, and it's from the Phantom of the Opera.

Earlier in the year Sarah Brightman had a hit from the same musical with Steve Harley, while Cliff Richard revisited one of his early hits with the Young Ones. Now just a ballad together.

Meanwhile in the land of the soap opera, Michelle got pregnant with Den Watts and very kind but nerdish George Holloway (commonly known as Lofty) has taken a liking to her and asked her to marry him. She said yes but being a soap opera is of course in two minds. Meanwhile her father Arthur Fowler wanted to make her a nice wedding ceremony but has no money because he has been out of work since his workplace closed down and there are no suitable jobs. So he "borrows" the Christmas Club money. Therefore it's an extra blow to him when Michelle decides not to go to the church on the way with him and cancels it all. Simon, known as Wicksy, has been making music, originally with a band featuring Kelvin Carpenter and Sharon Watts but they split and he made a solo song called "Every Loser Wins". Whilst in a very upset state about what has happened, Lofty has been listening to this song. Obviously he's the "loser" that is going to win.

Good time then to cash out on it and release it as a single, with Nick Berry being the actor who sings on it. TV having the effect it does, the single leaps in the UK chart from #66 in the chart to #4. That is, at this point in time, the biggest ever leap within the top 75.

Paul Hardcastle is a musician by nature and had that big hit "19" but this one also has a TV connection as it will be the new Top of the Pops theme. (But as I mentioned earlier it has nothing to do with Roy Wood and only has one Z in the title).
