Marvin Gaye's far superior cover version of a song that was a hit for Gladys Knight & The Pips just a year earlier, actually it wasn't his idea to do the cover, the co-writer Norman Whitfield wanted him to do it in this style. As this is its US chart run and it will take about 3 more months to hit the UK it will have two split runs and probably won't get to #1 overall. Had we all charted it together I have no doubt it would have got that high. It didn't in 1986 but I guess we always mark down re-issues.

Marmalade cash in on the Beatles' reluctance to release album tracks as singles and perhaps surprisingly it enters above Fleetwood Mac.

However I think my highest entry could well end up #1 on this combi-chart.

Ray Davies' song about looking through a photo album, was taken from their seminal double album The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society which was a concept album containing a collection of vignettes of English life. In 2008 the track served as the six-disc box set career retrospective of The Kinks.

1st December 1968

It's 2 weeks on top for Marvin Gaye as the highest new entry is a plaintive heart-rending Robin Gibb-sung Bee Gees gem, I Started A Joke, never the hit it should have been, in at 3. Pet Shop Boys did a great version which topped my charts some 40 years later, but back in '68 the run of big Bee Gees tracks is beaten only by The Beatles really, in terms of British bands. Mind you, everyone comes second to The Beatles even Marmalade who enter quite low with their quickie version of Ob La Di - it sounded fine at the time, a real fave, but now I know the original version there's no comparison really, Beatles everytime. The newly-released alternative versions they recorded in '68 are all better too. 

Dave Edmunds goes top 5 with his blistering guitar work, and a classic instrumental enters at 24 for Fleetwood Mac - Albatross, a UK 1969 chart-topper, and 1973 number 2, appropriately as another new entry from Archie Bell & The Drells was also a hit that year: Showdown is a great Northern Soul track entering at 55. The fab Joe South follows up his earlier chart entries here with his signature tune, Games People Play, like so many in this chart one I associate with 1969 when it became a UK hit. Not to worry, 1969 will have just as many UK 1970 tracks from the 1969 US charts I'm sure. 

At 48 Tommy James is back with a new mature sound, Crimson & Clover - a future hit for Joan Jett in the 80's - was one I very much didn't know at the time, though ti was one I knew OF as I became aware of the American chart hits that British radio didn't play. This became an annoyance to me until Paul Gambaccini started doing the US hits in the mid-70's, and I also discovered the American Forces Network when I lived in Gloucester - actual Shaggy, Casey Kasem, running them down. Fab! Rooby Doo!

Johnny Nash gets a second chart entry with You Got Soul, ditto Sammy Davis Jr with I've Gotta Be Me, a great song, and regular on the Dean Martin Show which was big around this time, certainly in Singapore if not so much the UK, where I saw it in ooh 10 months time. In at 70 a band I've never heard of with a very morbid Chi-Lites-sounding soul track, The Unifics, while Donovan has moved to Atlantis, Aquaman will be delighted as he's dropping a big DC movie next to celebrate the 50th anniversary. Probably. Andy Kim is also back with a rainbow.

In my original retro charts, there are songs that have yet to make my top 75, on the grounds that there are much better tracks than Cliff & Tom's efforts, however much I liked them way back when. Fair to say my penchant for popular crooner hit ballads & novelty songs hasn't lasted through the years in most cases. I have affection for them, but yeah, rather hear some other stuff!
