I’ve been working on a list of my 100 favourite songs from the 21st century. I’ve been accused of only listening to very old music, plus I have friends who claim no good music has been made since the mid 90s, this is an attempt to prove both wrong.
It’s not been easy, I started out with 642 contenders. In the end it’s an unashamedly populist list with a glaringly obvious number 1, I care so little about my own credibility it even includes some Coldplay.
1. Mr Brightside by the Killers 2. Time To Pretend by MGMT 3. Lose Yourself by Eminem 4. Paper Planes by M.I.A. 5. Still D.R.E. by Dr Dre featuring Snoop Dogg 6. Dog Days Are Over by Florence & the Machine 7. Stan by Eminem 8. Let’s Hang The Landlord by The King Blues 9. Tilted by Christine & the Queens 10. Forgot About Dre by Dr Dre featuring Eminem 11. Lots of really good tunes here, all the way down the list.
It does look to me that most of them are from the 00s – I think it would be a real challenge to make a comparable list limiting it to the 10s.

I’ve put this thread in the wrong place, haven’t I? If anyone knows how to move it to the Retro Lounge, please do.

I would agree with your number one but it is a bit annoying that it has almost become the 'Come On Eileen' of the 00s.

It is one of the factors as to why I'm seriously thinking of going back to a 1960s; & then a 1970s Haven Song KO contest before doing a 2000s; & 2010s contest.

You're right, I'd love to see the split between the two decades. With a lot of good music from the first few years of the century, it took me ages to ensure I wasn't accidentally including stuff from the late 90s, I never actually recorded whether they were 00s or 10s. I think the highest placed track from the 10s is Tilted at number 9, so I guess by default that's my favourite record of the decade. Maybe I'll separate them all some time but it would take me ages.

When making lists like this I try to re-listen to the songs and remember how they made me feel when I first got to know them. It's always a pleasure to hear Mr Brightside, but I can understand how it's become a bit wearing over the years.

Your list is a great one. But it is rather lightweight on pop and dance, both of which have thrown up some terrific tracks this century. If that type of music isn't to your taste, fair enough.

Thanks! Hmmm, dance music wise, I think it was around about 1992 when I realised the genre had passed its peak. For about 6 years it had been the home to some of the most exciting, innovative music being released, but by the mid 90s it had somehow turned into a strangely homogenised background splurge, not a noise exactly but just a sound that existed as a fact of life without ever doing anything to attract attention. It was clearly a vehicle for some people to make enormous amounts of money, but is destined to be forever associated with a type of holiday I have never been on but would have absolutely hated at any age. As far as pop is concerned, I am pretty sure my taste in indie music is at the poppier end of the genre (The Killers, Pulp, even Carter USM to some extent). I know of very little actual pop music from the 21st Century that's been any good though. I kind of feel like Robyn sticks out a bit in my list, I'm very happy for her to be there though, Dancing On My Own is a brilliant, brilliant track. As it happens Can't Get You Out Of My Head by Kylie Minogue was a close contender, she just didn't quite make it.

Amy Winehouse is my all-time least favourite singer, so I can't agree with your list.

I have never got the fascination with Mr Brightside. Most of it sung on one note. They made some classics but I really don't get that one.
All These Things That I've Done is probably among my favourite songs of the 21st century.

Amy Winehouse is my all-time least favourite singer, so I can't agree with your list. Wow, really? I was just completely enchanted by her, as a songwriter, performer and singer. She seemed to have the ability to put her personal experience and opinions into songs like very few before her. As has so often been the case in pop music, the same personality traits that made her such a success caused her downfall, a tragedy as great as any to befall music this century, I think.

All These Things That I've Done is probably among my favourite songs of the 21st century. I do like 'Mr Brightside' but it's probably only my fifth favourite of theirs, behind: 1. When we were young 2. Boots 3. Somebody told me 4. All these things that I've done

I never understood why people always go for Electric Feel or Kids by MGMT when Time To Pretend is clearly superior, glad you agree there.
This list does need more pop though! Stuff like Toxic, Since U Been Gone, Biology, Push The Button, Bad Romance all deserves a place in a list like this in my opinion.

Push The Button is class, that wasn't far from the top 100 (although they never topped Overload in my humble opinion, that was even closer). Kids was nearly top 100 too, but yes, Time To Pretend is in a different league altogether. I kind of admire Toxic for being fairly unique in its sound, it was a bold move for an artist from whom something more traditional would have been expected. I still don't actually like it much though. I don't think I know Biology, and the only Since You Been Gone I know is by Rainbow.

All these things that I've done When We Were Young really ought to have made the list, I think I was conscious of the need to diversify and not just have the same artists over and over again. Human is on there of course, you've made me wonder if it shouldn't be now.

Sorry, for repeating it again, but my favourite song from 21st century and my all-time # 1 too is Anmary - Beautiful Song.
