HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 22nd MARCH 1987

Mel and Kim extend their run at the top to three weeks, comfortably clear of all opposition.




Alison Moyet has to make do with a second week at number two, with Weak In The Presence of Beauty making up a bit of ground on Respectable but still a long way off.

Prince continues to climb as Sign ‘O’ The Times moves up a place to number three.

It’s at the lower end of the Top Five where all the action is. U2 get an enormous climb of 34 places to land at number four. With Or Without You is obviously this week’s biggest climber and becomes their third Top Five single on the Retro-Chart.

Janet Jackson also gets her third Top Five single as Let’s Wait Awhile climbs 24 places to number five.

Splitting the honours at number five with Janet is Terence Trent D'Arby, whose debut single, If You Let Me Stay, is making great progress on the chart, up 13 places.

Peter Gabriel gets this week’s highest new entry as Big Time debuts at number ten, one of a mere four new songs on this week’s chart.

It's 3 weeks on top for the late Jackie Wilson as Prince threatens to get his first chart-topper at 2 with the awesome Sign 'O The Times. Billy Idol gets a 5th top 10, and Hot Choc remix their 1978 terrific riff-laden Winner back in at 8, top 10 for the second time. Ferry Aid means one Beatle song in, one out, of the 10 and Herb Alpert gets his 3rd top 10, one for each decade.

Rod Stewart brings Sailing back into the 20 for the 3rd time, I have no idea why, Tina Turner goes top 40, and Fleetwood Mac drop the first single to their great comeback album Tango In The Night, Big Love at 28. Boy George's version of Ken Boothe's cover of Bread's Everything I Own plummets, as Ken enters at 29 13 years on. U2 finally go top 40, Peter Gabriel grabs another shot at the Big Time too, and FYC return all Buzzcocky, Siouxsie rides along, and The Pretenders also go top 40 for a very much '78/'79 theme, along with The Whispers coming back new at 48 with 1980 top 10 And The Beat Goes On.

Future 90's oldie smash, Crazy, from Patsy Cline enters at 50 20-odd years after she died in a plane crash, following a terrific vintage clip on The Tube I think, and veteran 60's World Music star charter Hugh Masekela is also back with new material keeping the anti-apartheid theme strong in the chart. That leaves Kool & The Gang sneaking in for a last time (probably) and The Stranglers Shakin' Life A Leaf, probably for the same reason.

U2 achieve their third consecutive number one, replacing A-Ha who have themselves had 3 number ones since the time U2 achieved their previous one, but they were not consecutive as they had several hits between their 2nd and 3rd.

Madonna gets the highest new entry with a holiday-themed song.

If you co-own a major record label you can release music whenever you want, and Herb Alpert's last hit was "Rise" in 1979 but before that he had a number of 60s hits. The closest he came to #1 in my chart was with "Spanish Flea" which peaked at #2 sandwiched between "Day Tripper" which was #1 and kept him off and "We Can Work It Out" which couldn't get past #3. A lesser hit for him was "Tijuana Taxi", a lead-out tune for Leyton Orient, and the style on which I based Catmania.
