HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 24th MAY 1987

Whitney Houston gets her first number one on the Retro-Chart as I Wanna Dance With Somebody moves up from its debut last week at number five.



Whitney came close to achieving a number one with her Saving All My Love For You but was thwarted by West End Girls and ended up peaking at number two. Two further singles from her eponymous debut album made numbers 3 and 7 on the chart, but this latest release left the rest of the field standing.

John Farnham provided the expected challenge this week as You’re The Voice moves up a place to the runner-up spot.

This week’s surprise contender was Suzanne Vega as Luka leaps an enormous 32 places to finish up in third position, easily eclipsing the number 25 peak of her previous biggest single, Marlene On The Wall, in 1985.

There’s a tie for fourth place with Crowded House breaking into the Top Five with Don’t Dream It’s Over, meeting up with last week’s number one on the way down as Starship cross the 1,000 points barrier, one of five songs so far this year.

Highest new entry this week is from Erasure as Victim Of Love enters at number 18, instantly becoming their fourth Top 20 hit.

Two artists whose last 3 singles all reached #1 look likely to break their runs. Marillion had 3 number ones in 1985 with Kayleigh, Lavender and Heart Of Lothian, and it looked like Incommunicado may have achieved it but this week stalls at #2. Meanwhile U2's last 3 singles Pride (In The Name Of Love), The Unforgettable Fire and With Or Without You all reached #1, but this week they only manage the 3rd highest entry.

ABC, who reached #1 in 1982 with All Of My Heart enter with When Smokey Sings, which is about Smokey Robinson, not the English 70s band. Smokey Robinson enters the chart for the first time in 6 years with "Just To See Her", which is #13 in the US chart this week. He's also had a #1 in my chart, way back in 1965 with "Tracks Of My Tears" (together with the Miracles)

It's 2 weeks on top for T.Rex as another golden oldie is straight in at 2 - Tom Jones is reactivated chart-wise and a hit all over again is his signature tune, It's Not Unusual - a track I loved as a kid and would def have topped my charts had I been compiling them in 1965. Better late than never! After 4 weeks at 4 Wet Wet Wet finally drop, but it's better than some chart-toppers in 1987, and just to prove the point the over-rated Whitney monster gives her a second top 10, ahead of it suffering 32 years of over-playing. U2 OTOH is a classic, and up to 6, and still fresh.

Herb Alpert & Tina Turner both bound into the 20, 24 Carat Diamonds, and Breaking Every Rule still being chart successful 2 decades on. In at 30, errr, Star Trekkin'. It was amusing the first couple of times, and anything Star Trek would meet with my approval. Until I got quickly sick of it and grew to dislike it. Ah, well, proof I liked it for a while. A bunch of old covers enter the 40, The Beastie Boys get a second top 40, and Suzanne Vega gets a second too. Pepsi & Shirlie get a second chart entry minus the Wham! boys, Erasure keep on with the run, Boy George is back, Living In A Box get a quick foillow-up, LL Cool J returns, Alison Moyet has a subdued entry, Billy Idol's fab gentle Sweet Sixteen is a change in direction for him, The Kane Gang are back 3 years on, and The BLow Monkeys team up with soul legend Curtis Mayfield 2 years after his stage fall left him paralysed for the rest of his life. He first charted in 1971 with Move On Up.
