Bobby Goldsboro gets to #1, probably not an artist we were expecting to do so at the start of the year. I always used to do a "surprise number one artist of the year.." the rule being they must have been "known" i.e. having had some hits before or at least some singles out before that possibly all flopped.
On the new entry side we have David Essex making a debut, whilst Hudson-Ford chart as a duo having split from the Strawbs who had a massive #1 earlier in the year which they wrote.

It's a great month for new music: among the songs we have what I think is the only single of Tina Turner's whole career that she wrote herself, the debut of Manfred Mann's Earth Band, the new band for Manfred Mann, and a Spinners classic, but the highest new entry is one of the finest songs by Status Quo.

Wizzard return to #1 for the second time this year, like they did in the UK, and with the Move also having had a #1 (but not with the same song as in the UK). They will of course be battling Slade later for the Christmas #1.
David Bowie gets the highest entry, but hey hey, it's the Laughing Gnome... he actually released this originally in 1967 but having now found fame and fortune it has been re-released and reached the UK top 10.
Second highest entry is a classic soul song by Gladys Knight & The Pips who have had a lot of singles but only two top 10 hits in my chart so far, "Take Me In Your Arms And Love Me" being the biggest peaking at #9 having also entered at #16.

Eye Level by Simon Park Orchestra, the theme from Van Der Valk, reached the top 10 last year - in the UK it stumbled into the top 50 in 1972 then was re-issued in 1973 to become the "elephant in the room". A bit like Engelbert in 1967 and later Robson & Jerome in 1995 - in that it kept all the relevant cool stuff off #1. (Having said that, Eye Level wasn't bad, The Last Waltz wasn't bad although Release Me was, Robson & Jerome were just terrible, both their #1s from 1995. Ok I'll accept they were decent actors).
Anyway, The Sweet have not yet had a #1 in this chart, I think they've peaked at #2 three times so far, albeit Blockbuster was one of their lowest peaking singles, but now crashing in at #3 they are highly tipped to be #1 next week without any major competition. Slade's "My Friend Stan" will come up shortly.
It will be very interesting to see how our combined retro chart deals with 1973. But I have to wait another 3 years to find out. Whatever is the chart here is what will be submitted by myself.

The Sweet remain at #1 now under pressure from Elton John and Bryan Ferry, whilst Slade get the highest entry. They didn't enter at #1 in the UK with this song, only at #4, and whilst it will cilmb to #2 it will also fail to displace "Eye Level". Their last two number ones were mis-spelt too - here they did not omit the "i" from Friend but did print the N back to front on the label, both of Friend and Stan.
Elsewhere, we lose Paul Simon and gain Art Garfunkel. We also lose Hudson-Ford in exchange for the remaining Strawbs.

-- ( -- ) Jesse - Roberta Flack -- ( -- ) You're A Special Part Of Me - Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye
A lot of new entries this week. Sweet hold on to the top. Bob Dylan has two of his songs in the top 5. David Cassidy has been doing strangely well in this char - biggest hit so far "Could It Be Forever" reaching #1, and "How Can I Be Sure" didn't chart due to my take on covers and that the Rascals had had a big hit with it in 1967 and David Cassidy's version wasn't significantly different (or better). As well as Bob Dylan's success we have 60s bands The Hollies and The Who both getting entries in the top 20.
In spite of her success with "Killing Me Softly" Roberta Flack fails to chart this time around, whilst Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye, who both had top 3 hits recently with "Touch Me In The Morning" and "Let's Get It On" respectively, fail to chart as a duo.

-- ( -- ) Cheaper To Keep Her - Johnnie Taylor
So the Carpenters do get to #1 - I always knew they'd get there with this song, I thought they may have had more #1s in total but only "We've Only Just Begun" has previously reached the top for them.
As Sweet fall from the top, Mud make their debut. The bands would be in a battle for Chinn-Chapman songs going forward.

Always fun to be listening to Christmas songs in the first week of March but it sometimes falls this way. And 3 of the most classic Christmas songs there are too. Plus some other classics in the final playlist of the year has led me to believe that 1973 is probably the best year of music I have yet covered, and is certainly under-rated as a great year for music.
I have scored up the penultimate 1973 playlist which was also full of total classics.
Of the songs in the chart above I didn't mention but "It Hurts So Good" by Millie Jackson is the original, or at least early version of the song simply called "Hurts So Good" when covered by Susan Cadogan and later Jimmy Somerville both in a reggae style.
The number of soul songs in particular given the reggae treatment makes it feel it was just the easiest formula to having a hit. (People may mention UB40 but Homely Girl is the only soul hit from this era I recall them giving this treatment to).

The highest new entry is Alvin Stardust, which has Bernard Jewry dancing to it on TOTP as a frontman though he didn't sing on it. He will take that name for himself though, and had hits in the 1960s as Shane Fenton. His biggest hit so far "It's All Over Now" reached #5 in 1962 with "I'm A Moody Guy" reaching #6 in 1961. However on this single it's Peter Shelley writing and singing on it.

It was a fairly close battle at the top actually this week but the Carpenters remain on top for a 4th week. A lot of singles have topped the chart for 4 weeks in 1973, "Life On Mars" managed 5 whilst at the start of the year "You're So Vain" clocked up 6 weeks at the top, one of them on the last chart of 1972.
The highest new entry is the Steve Miller Band song that wouldn't top the UK chart for 17 years, and a number of these are getting to NM #1 on their first time out so this looks likely to join that list whilst Gary Glitter's second UK #1 enters lower at #12 - still a good entry position though and will probably go top 5 next week.

-- ( -- ) And You Smiled - Matt Monro -- ( -- ) Be - Neil Diamond -- ( -- ) Show And Tell - Al Wilson
The list of songs that reached NM #1 at a much earlier time than in the UK chart increases, and when I get 1957 done I'll expect "Reet Petite" to probably join the list too. As it is Stand By Me, Stand By Your Man, Space Oddity, Imagine and now The Joker have reached #1 by the end of 1973 by which time none of them had been UK #1s and 3 of them hadn't even charted yet.
Mott The Hoople get the highest entry. John Lennon joins Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr in the chart but there's no sign of a George Harrison song at present though he did reach #3 earlier in the year with "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)".
The New Seekers song became their 2nd UK #1 after a rather unsuccessful year and was the first ever #1 for songwriter Geoff Stephens in spite of his many hits up to this point. He would co-write one more in 1977 (Silver Lady) both of these co-written with Tony Macauley who has written many more #1s. In my chart Geoff Stephens has written / co-written two #1s, "Tell Me When" by the Applejacks and "Winchester Cathedral" for his own band the New Vaudeville Band which at that point was just a studio project. One of his best songs "There's A Kind Of Hush" got stuck at #2, and so did one of Tony Macauley's best songs "Build Me Up Buttercup".

December 1973 is a hot month. January 1974 is nowhere near, although that also has a handful of great songs but there is just not enough space in the top end of the chart to fit all the big ones in here.
Roy Wood gets a solo entry but expect something from his band - the one he's most famous for.

Great to see La Ross' Touch Me In The Morning reach #3 in the NM chart!
Rather surprisingly this was a much bigger seller than Ain't No Mountain High enough in the US.

There's so many forgotten gems for me in these charts. Have to admit I haven't heard that Alvin Stardust song for ages and I sometime tune in 70s radio.

I was listening to Absolute 70s radio yesterday. Listening one day of course it sounds great. The question is whether, if I tune in to it every day, I'll hear the same songs as the day before instead of different ones. With Absolute the chances are it's the former - they have their favourites and those are the ones they play.
I knew most of the big hits in my chart before. Of the big hits probably only Dr Hook was a new discovery for this year. Yet I would not have placed 1973 as such a great year for music until I ran through it having run through others.
Comparing "Touch Me In The Morning" which reached #3 in my chart vs "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" which topped my chart in 1970 I have to say 1973 is so far ahead in general of 1970 that Touch Me.. may even be the better song, just it was up against "Money" and "Life On Mars". 1970 had "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "Question" but on the whole was far weaker than 1973.
1973 started with a bang and ended with one. January 1974 has a few good songs but is generally poor.
