HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 31st JANUARY 1988
For only the third time in the history of the 80s Retro-Chart we have a tie at the top.
Tiffany has been overhauled after just a single week at the top. In her place are two equally brilliant but very different records, a late surge for Taylor Dayne saw Tell It To My Heart share the number one spot with Dignity by Deacon Blue.
The first time we had a joint number one was in April 1983 when the final week of New Order’s four week run at the top was split with Beat It by Michael Jackson. And then in August 1984, Howard Jones’s second chart-topper, Like To Get To Know You Well shared its second week at the top with Careless Whisper by George Michael.
Both Dignity and Tell It To My Heart have topped three individual charts this week, providing both acts with their first Retro-Chart number one single.
Official Chart history is made next week when Kylie takes over at number one, being the first time that three female solo artists had achieved consecutive number one singles. We’re years ahead of that achievement on our chart, in 1985 Bonnie Tyler’s Holding Out For A Hero took over from Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill, which in turn took over from Into The Groove by Madonna.
So, we emulate this feat once again on our chart, with chart-toppers from Belinda Carlisle and Tiffany being succeeded by Taylor Dayne, albeit in a shared capacity with the predominantly male contingent of Deacon Blue!
Tiffany ends up the loser in a three-way chart battle this week as she slides down the chart alongside Belinda Carlisle and Terence Trent D’Arby.
Biggest climb is a 20 place leap from Eddy Grant as Gimme Hope Jo’anna moves up to number 13.
Highest new entry is in at number 22 from Faith No More with We Care A Lot.
And here’s this week’s Retro Chart in full….
