HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 21st FEBRUARY 1988
Taylor Dayne manages a surprising fourth week at the top with Tell It To My Heart as it rapidly loses steam. Taylor posts the lowest weekly points total registered since Starship climbed back to the top of the charts with Nothing’s Gonna Stop Me Now in May last year on a meagre 125 points. She can console herself with the fact that she has equalled the longest stay at number one for a female artists – a record previously made by Whitney Houston with her four week number one I Wanna Dance With Somebody (also last May)
Tell It To My Heart and Dignity are still locked together, with Deacon Blue remaining at number two for a third week.
An orderly queue of challengers has formed behind the top two, all unable to capitalise on their slump, with our points being scattered and divided across our individual charts. Of the 14 charts posted this week there are eleven different songs at number one.
So, first up as a likely contender for next week’s number one is house act Bomb The Bass with their debut hit Beat Dis. It was the highest new entry last week at number 10 and charges seven place to this week’s number three. Krush came close to getting to number one last month, could this be the first dance-orientated chart-topper since Pump Up The Volume?
Michael Jackson is back in the Top Five as Man In The Mirror climbs three places, his fourth Top Ten hit from his enormously successful Bad album. He’s not had a number one since Thriller in 1983, could Man In The Mirror return him to the top?
Making steady progress is French singer Vanessa Paradis as Joe Le Taxi motors into the Top Five. A possible outside bet for continuing the run of female chart-toppers?
The Smiths have an incredible record on the Retro-Chart, now lead singer Morrissey has his own record out. Suedehead makes an impressive debut at number seven. The Smiths have already taken two songs to the top of the chart, could Morrissey add another to his tally?
Biggest climb is from Echo and The Bunnymen as People Are Strange climbs 15 places to number 23 – their first appearance on the chart since Bring On The Dancing Horses peaked at number 10 in 1985.
And here’s this week’s Retro Chart in full….
