McCartney wrote the song in 1969, just before the Beatles' break-up. This much covered McCartney album rock love song was credited to his wife Linda with helping him get through the difficult time. All the instruments: guitars, bass, piano, organ and drums are played by the former Beatle. This much covered song is Paul's all time favourite composition. The Wings Over America live version became a top-ten hit in the USA and reached UK #28 in 1977.

It's a first week on top for Your Song as Elton John knocks his own Border Song off the top months before it becomes a UK hit single - I can't help thinking they released the singles in the wrong order, Your Song first to catch attention and get the hit, then Border Song to become a much bigger follow-up hit. Hey ho, Elt still makes a Paul McCartney sandwich at 2 with Maybe I'm Amazed. The 5th Domension climb into the top 5, and the top 20, with Save The Country and Puppet Man, Crabby Appleton get their only top 10 with the fab Go Back, and Marvin Gaye gets a top 10 with Tammi Terrell on California Soul as his cover of Dion's Abraham Martin & John enters at 30.

Led Zep ramble quickly up to 13 for their biggest track to date, and The Four Tops replace themselves in the 20. The Hollies also add to their long list of top 20's with a song title that would have alternate meanings in more recent decades, and The Moody Blues pose a Question as they climb 25 places to 25. Mr Bloe enters at 35, not only nicking the actual name of the Tony Orlando & Wind instrumental B side which charted in 1969 for me, but also the name as an artist name, even though it was a re-recorded soundalike, the first try of which featured Elton John on piano - who also featured on the instrumental B side. 

In at 49, The beach Boys cover Leadbelly's 1940 blues song and get their last UK top 10 for 9 years with Cotton Fields, Nick Drake gets a 2nd haunting entry with Day Is Done, Dusty's back again in her Philly Soul groove with a track written by Gamble Huff & assorted other soul greats that does't quite match it's pedigree, Richard Barnes debuts with some Mountains that don't belong to Prince or refer to Shakira's breasts, and Tommy James gets a solo entry, and not his last, either.
