-- ( 24 ) All The Way - Frank Sinatra (#22) -- ( 25 ) Jack O'Diamonds - Lonnie Donegan (#24)
A slow start to a new year isn't unusual. Buddy Holly & The Crickets take over at the top with their classic "Oh Boy".
One of the new entries is by the Kaye Sisters whose #1 with Frankie Vaughan is still hanging around near the bottom of the chart. This is one of the rare 1950s hits not on Spotify. Only one from 1956 and one from 1957 and in 1958 we already have another one. (In 1957 Perry Como's "The Girl With The Golden Braids" was the missing track, which is one of his best songs actually).

"Oh Boy!" remains at #1 and "Great Balls Of Fire" has had a strange run 4-2-1-1-3-3-2 whilst "At The Hop" 6-4-3-4-5-4-3.
McGuire Sisters get the highest entry with "Sugartime". They really were sisters, 3 of them. One of them is still alive.

A bunch of new entries, but let's concentrate primarily on the entry of "The Story Of My Life" as that is the first hit written by Burt Bacherach and Hal David, and Perry Como's "Magic Moments" is along soon, which they also wrote. Both were #1s in the UK. "The Story Of My Life" was recorded in the USA by Marty Robbins but didn't peak high enough to get on the playlist.
They would go on to write a load more classics including "Walk On By", "I Say A Little Prayer" and loads of others.
On the subject of "Magic Moments", there's a video clip of Perry Como with the McGuire Sisters performing mostly "Sugartime" but adding snippets of that song in too.

Buddy Holly & The Crickets do manage to hold out for a 4th week. Marion Ryan enters as the highest new entry. If she gets to #1 it will mean a mother and son will have both hit the top separately as she is Barry (and Paul) Ryan's mother.

1 February 1958:
1 ( 2 ) Sugartime - McGuire Sisters < 1st #1 > 2 ( 1 ) Oh Boy - Crickets (#1[4]) 3 ( 5 ) Sail Along Silv'ry Moon - Billy Vaughn 4 ( 9 ) Love Me Forever - Marion Ryan 5 ( 3 ) Buzz Buzz Buzz - Hollywood Flames (#3)

16 ( -- ) Catch A Falling Star - Perry Como 17 ( 20 ) I Beg Of You - Elvis Presley 18 ( -- ) Maybe - Chantels 19 ( 16 ) Get A Job - Silhouettes (#16) 20 ( 19 ) Don't Let Go - Roy Hamilton (#19)

The McGuire Sisters get to #1. A very charming song. The King Brothers benefit from the original of this song (Four Lads) not reaching the top 25 in the USA.
Paul Anka in both retro charts but as I mentioned he's generally better around this point in his career.
Perry Como charting with Catch A Falling Star, which is charted separately from and slightly earlier than Magic Moments, but were a double A-side in the UK. "You Are My Destiny" was not covered by Lionel Richie, nor "Maybe" by Emma Bunton nor "Oh Julie" by Shakin' Stevens. (Oh Julie was one of his only 2 self-written hits).

-- ( -- ) Jo-Ann - Playmates
The volume of new songs in February 1958 is high. It goes down a little in the next playlist, but this playlist covered just 4 weeks which is just as well as I can't post a chart this Friday.
You will be very familiar with "March From The River Kwai", also known a "Captain Bogey March" albeit a slight adaptation, originally written near the start of the First World War and used in the film "Bridge On The River Kwai" thus its release in 1958. It's a famous marching band tune.
It enters as the highest new entry above "Magic Moments" which was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.
Outside of the charts, the major news item of the week was the Munich Air Crash featuring the Manchester United team plane. Sporting events are usually written into one post in the middle of the year, but I needed to mention it here when it happened. In that one I will go through the winners of the year.

-- ( 22 ) The Story Of My Life - Michael Holliday (#13) -- ( 24 ) Shake Me I Rattle - Kaye Sisters (#7) -- ( 25 ) Don't - Elvis Presley (#21)
Actually there were originally 5 for this week (based on what entered the chart) but all 3 that were totally eliminated from the playlist were from this week. As a result Playmates were put back in and this time make it into the chart.

Louis Prima gets the highest entry with Buona Sera. Acker Bilk's version reached #2 at the end of 1960, only 2 years and 10 months after this version. We also have Connie Francis having a hit with a song that was a hit for Johnnie Ray last year, but, well, this is the "definitive" version.
Between those the classic "Tequila" by the Champs.
The song that enters at #15 was a minor hit at the turn of the 70s-80s when covered by the Inmates.

A lot of songs this week, a handful next week and just one on 22 March (which is quite a novelty song!), so I'll see what I can do about spreading these out and putting the two that missed out back onto the playlist. Danny & The Juniors really suffering from being too much of a carbon copy of their last big hit.

Lollipop climbs to #2 - there were two versions out in the UK and the Mudlarks charted later but higher, reaching #2. "Sweet Little Sixteen" has the same tune as "Surfin' USA", Brian Wilson copying it. So far a number one eludes Chuck Berry but I have a feeling that may not be long in coming.

The Little Blue Man was the only song actually on this week in the playlist, the others were moved across to even things up a bit. It's a rather silly song. There are a couple of videos that have been made for it.

-- ( 22 ) No Other Baby - Bobby Helms (#14) -- ( 24 ) The Walk - Jimmie McCracklin (#12) -- ( 25 ) Put A Light In The Window - King Brothers (#3)
Maybe the Little Blue Man will get to #1 next week as it climbs up to #3. It's a very twee song but back in 1958 it feels like you can get away with it. I have the Witchdoctor on my current playlist - that's Alvin & The Chipmunks. Cartoons didn't get a hit with it for me in 1999. (In the UK that reached #2 behind Mr Oizo!)
The highest new entry was covered in 1985 by Amazulu and I have "Too Good To Be Forgotten" on my current 1974 playlist too.
My new 1958 playlist includes several songs that have been hit covers. One was #1 in 1977, one was a #6 hit in a vocal version in 1980 and has become a popular chant. There are two classics within a week of each other, one of them potentially the greatest rock and roll song of all time.

This number one will be met with a lot of disgust from many, if anyone actually reads this and checks out the song...
5 April 1958:
1 ( 3 ) The Little Blue Man - Betty Johnson < 1st #1 > 2 ( 1 ) Buona Sera - Louis Prima (#1[5]) 3 ( 7 ) Don't You Just Know It - Huey (Piano) Smith & The Clowns 4 ( 2 ) Lollipop - Chordettes (#2[3]) 5 ( 4 ) Listen To Me - Buddy Holly (#4)
6 ( -- ) Oh Lonesome Me - Don Gibson 7 ( 12 ) Billy - Kathy Linden 8 ( 6 ) Whole Lotta Woman - Marvin Rainwater (#6) 9 ( 5 ) Good Golly Miss Molly - Little Richard (#3) 10 ( 16 ) The Big Beat - Fats Domino
11 ( 13 ) In Love - Michael Holliday 12 ( 9 ) Maybe Baby - Crickets (#9) 13 ( 10 ) Can't Get Along Without You - Frankie Vaughan (#10) 14 ( -- ) Believe What You Say - Ricky Nelson 15 ( 8 ) Sweet Little Sixteen - Chuck Berry (#2[1])
16 ( -- ) My Bucket's Got A Hole In It - Ricky Nelson 17 ( 14 ) Swingin' Shepherd Blues - Ted Heath (#14) 18 ( 15 ) Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay - Danny & The Juniors (#15) 19 ( 11 ) Tequila - Champs (#4) 20 ( 18 ) To Be Loved - Jackie Wilson (#18)
21 ( -- ) Twilight Time - Platters 22 ( 20 ) Dinner With Drac - John Zacherle (#18) 23 ( -- ) Book Of Love - Monotones 24 ( 17 ) The Clouds Will Soon Roll By - Tony Brent (#9) 25 ( 19 ) Breathless - Jerry Lee Lewis (#14)
-- ( 21 ) Nairobi - Tommy Steele (#17) -- ( 22 ) Who's Sorry Now - Connie Francis (#7) -- ( 23 ) Sugartime - McGuire Sisters (#1[4]) -- ( 24 ) Baby Lover - Petula Clark (#18) -- ( 25 ) Love Me Forever - Marion Ryan (#2[3])
Yes, looking at what else there has been, we have had released by Buddy Holly, Little Richard (albeit a bit earlier) and a UK #1 from Marvin Rainwater but it has prevailed against all of those. Actually Little Richard getting to #3 with the original of the song the Swinging Blue Jeans later totally flopped with (at a time I was charting covers when the original predated the 1960s) I guess is a feat in itself. Thus "Oh Lonesome Me" was also a hit for Craig Douglas in 1962 but did only peak at #15 for him.
Actually there is something about novelty songs that make them stick in your head the way normal songs like Buddy Holly's do not. Buddy Holly has had a #1 with "Oh Boy" but that's always been considered one of his classics and of course I was very familiar with that one already. He will go on to have more, and if he only hadn't died in a plane crash so soon, possibly even more still.

12 April 1958:
1 ( 1 ) The Little Blue Man - Betty Johnson < 2nd week at #1 > 2 ( 3 ) Don't You Just Know It - Huey (Piano) Smith & The Clowns 3 ( 6 ) Oh Lonesome Me - Don Gibson 4 ( 2 ) Buona Sera - Louis Prima (#1[5]) 5 ( 7 ) Billy - Kathy Linden
6 ( -- ) Witch Doctor - David Seville 7 ( 5 ) Listen To Me - Buddy Holly (#4) 8 ( 4 ) Lollipop - Chordettes (#2[3]) 9 ( 10 ) The Big Beat - Fats Domino 10 ( 14 ) Believe What You Say - Ricky Nelson
11 ( -- ) Wear My Ring Around Your Neck - Elvis Presley 12 ( 16 ) My Bucket's Got A Hole In It - Ricky Nelson 13 ( 11 ) In Love - Michael Holliday (#11) 14 ( 8 ) Whole Lotta Woman - Marvin Rainwater (#6) 15 ( 9 ) Good Golly Miss Molly - Little Richard (#3)
16 ( 21 ) Twilight Time - Platters 17 ( -- ) The Grand Coolie Dam - Lonnie Donegan 18 ( 12 ) Maybe Baby - Crickets (#9) 19 ( 23 ) Book Of Love - Monotones 20 ( 13 ) Can't Get Along Without You - Frankie Vaughan (#10)
21 ( 17 ) Swingin' Shepherd Blues - Ted Heath (#14) 22 ( 18 ) Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay - Danny & The Juniors (#15) 23 ( 15 ) Sweet Little Sixteen - Chuck Berry (#2[1]) 24 ( 20 ) To Be Loved - Jackie Wilson (#18) 25 ( 22 ) Dinner With Drac - John Zacherle (#18)
-- ( 19 ) Tequila - Champs (#4) -- ( 24 ) The Clouds Will Soon Roll By - Tony Brent (#9) -- ( 25 ) Breathless - Jerry Lee Lewis (#14)
The fun goes on. David Seville has the highest new entry with the Witch Doctor. The chorus features his voice sped up as a backing to his own regular voice, which subsequently led to The Chipmunk Song with sped up voices, and later Chipmunks would feature heavily in most of his music. (Ok, maybe it didn't happen like that).
In any case the Witch Doctor was a very popular song in 1958.

In 1999 "Witch Doctor" by Cartoons was kept off #1 by "Flat Beat". On my chart in April 1958 David Seville's original is being kept off by "The Little Blue Man". Actually Petula Clark covered "Little Blue Man" as a B-side. Don't You Just Know It was a hit cover for Amazulu in 1985. Oh Lonesome Me was covered by Craig Douglas in 1962, and All I Have To Do Is Dream was covered too by Bobbie Gentry & Glen Campbell in 1969.
And then of course Chanson D'Amour was covered by Manhattan Transfer in 1977 and reached #1 in the UK. Their arrangement was very "faithful" to the Art & Dotty Todd version except that in the original they sing "I Adore" whereas Manhattan Transfer keep the French with "Je T'Adore" which isn't an exact translation (I Adore You) but it scans better. And in early 1977 I was learning French at school which was probably what fascinated me most about the song.

26 April 1958:
1 ( 5 ) All I Have To Do Is Dream - Everly Brothers < 3rd #1 > 2 ( 2 ) Witch Doctor - David Seville 3 ( 1 ) The Little Blue Man - Betty Johnson (#1[3]) 4 ( -- ) Johnny B Goode - Chuck Berry 5 ( 8 ) Chanson D'Amour - Art & Dotty Todd

11 ( 10 ) Believe What You Say - Ricky Nelson (#10) 12 ( -- ) Happy Guitar - Tommy Steele 13 ( 19 ) Kewpie Doll - Perry Como 14 ( 14 ) The Grand Coolie Dam - Lonnie Donegan 15 ( 12 ) My Bucket's Got A Hole In It - Ricky Nelson (#12)
16 ( 20 ) Return To Me - Dean Martin 17 ( 11 ) The Big Beat - Fats Domino (#9) 18 ( 9 ) Buona Sera - Louis Prima (#1[5]) 19 ( 23 ) I May Never Pass This Way Again - Ronnie Hilton 20 ( 16 ) Twilight Time - Platters (#16)

The Everly Brothers get their first 3 singles all reach number one, the first artist to achieve this. Anne Shelton got to #1 with her first two hits on the chart and hasn't had a 3rd yet. Guy Mitchell reached the top with his first 2 hits but has had many hits since then none of which have reached #1. (Of course if I stretch my chart back further then Guy Mitchell will have loads of back catalogue. To get to Anne Shelton's though I'll have to go back to the early 40s).
All I Have To Do Is Dream is a classic, of course, but it's under threat from Chuck Berry who enters at #4 with his most definitive song. Not really a question of "if" except for the next chart. More a matter of "when".

Finally a number one for Chuck Berry. This was always his most likely number one... (in 1972 "My Ding-A-Ling" did chart but fizzled out at #30. He has however had quite a few #2 hits).
