I've been using the US top 25. Wikipedia is not correct, there was no "Hot 100" in 1956, there was a "Top 100" which is what I use and it peaked there at #28. It peaked at #24 in the US Best Sellers chart but was just outside of range for me.

30 August 1958:
1 ( 4 ) Summertime Blues - Eddie Cochran < 1st #1 > 2 ( 2 ) Born Too Late - Poni-Tails 3 ( 1 ) Fever - Peggy Lee (#1[4]) 4 ( 7 ) Rockin' Robin - Bobby Day 5 ( 9 ) Stupid Cupid - Connie Francis
6 ( -- ) It's All In The Game - Tommy Edwards 7 ( 3 ) Left Right Out Of Your Heart - Patti Page (#2[2]) 8 ( 8 ) Bird Dog - Everly Brothers 9 ( 6 ) Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu - Domenico Modugno 10 ( 5 ) Trudie - Joe Mr Piano Henderson (#4)
11 ( -- ) Tears On My Pillow - Little Anthony & The Imperials 12 ( 12 ) Devoted To You - Everly Brothers 13 ( 20 ) Little Train - Max Bygraves 14 ( -- ) Got A Match - Russ Conway 15 ( 14 ) Are You Really Mine - Jimmie Rodgers
16 ( 11 ) Everybody Loves A Lover - Doris Day (#8) 17 ( 22 ) Little Bernadette - Harry Belafonte 18 ( 10 ) Ginger Bread - Frankie Avalon (#4) 19 ( 23 ) Susie Darlin' - Robin Luke 20 ( 13 ) Early In The Morning - Bobby Darin & The Rinky Dinks (#11)
21 ( 15 ) Somebody Touched Me - Buddy Knox (#13) 22 ( 25 ) Carolina Moon - Connie Francis 23 ( 18 ) Wonderful Things - Frankie Vaughan (#14) 24 ( 16 ) Jacqueline - Bobby Helms (#7) 25 ( 21 ) Western Movies - Olympics (#17)
-- ( 17 ) When - Kalin Twins (#1[3]) -- ( 19 ) The Only Man On The Island - Tommy Steele (#4) -- ( 24 ) Think It Over - Crickets (#21)
Eddie Cochran gets his classic to #1 beating the Poni-Tails who are not there not because they were born too late but simply because a better song came along.
The highest new entry was a UK and US #1 for Tommy Edwards, originally written as an instrumental in the 1910s but with lyrics by Carl Sigman and recorded by Tommy Edwards in 1951 but re-recorded in 1958, and later covered by Cliff Richard and also The Four Tops.
The second highest new entry was also successfully covered with Kylie Minogue taking it to #1 in 1990.

1 ( 1 ) Summertime Blues - Eddie Cochran < 2nd week at #1 > 2 ( 6 ) It's All In The Game - Tommy Edwards 3 ( 2 ) Born Too Late - Poni-Tails (#2[2]) 4 ( 4 ) Rockin' Robin - Bobby Day 5 ( 5 ) Stupid Cupid - Connie Francis
6 ( 11 ) Tears On My Pillow - Little Anthony & The Imperials 7 ( 3 ) Fever - Peggy Lee (#1[4]) 8 ( 14 ) Got A Match - Russ Conway 9 ( 8 ) Bird Dog - Everly Brothers (#8) 10 ( 13 ) Little Train - Max Bygraves
11 ( -- ) Moon Talk - Perry Como 12 ( 7 ) Left Right Out Of Your Heart - Patti Page (#2[2]) 13 ( 12 ) Devoted To You - Everly Brothers (#12) 14 ( 9 ) Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu - Domenico Modugno (#9) 15 ( -- ) Near You - Roger Williams

21 ( 22 ) Carolina Moon - Connie Francis 22 ( -- ) Girl Of My Dreams - Tony Brent 23 ( 16 ) Everybody Loves A Lover - Doris Day (#8) 24 ( 18 ) Ginger Bread - Frankie Avalon (#4) 25 ( 21 ) Somebody Touched Me - Buddy Knox (#13)

No change at #1 but Tommy Edwards climbs to challenge for the #1 whilst Perry Como gets the highest entry with "Moon Talk". The strangest entry this week is comic actor Bernard Bresslaw who already had a hit with that Army Game theme and now has a solo hit about two birds mating. He has a rather awful singing voice too.

13 September 1958:
1 ( 1 ) Summertime Blues - Eddie Cochran < 3rd week at #1 > 2 ( 2 ) It's All In The Game - Tommy Edwards 3 ( 4 ) Rockin' Robin - Bobby Day 4 ( 5 ) Stupid Cupid - Connie Francis 5 ( 6 ) Tears On My Pillow - Little Anthony & The Imperials

Finally, the week has arrived when Cliff Richard makes his chart debut. He is one month short of his 18th birthday at this point in time, and actually the single is credited to Cliff Richard & The Drifters, though his backing group is actually not Clyde McPhatter's group but Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch and others (yeah, The Shadows).
He will later in his career cover the song currently at #2 which didn't make it to the top this week (but maybe will next week?). In the UK chart though he was kept off the top by Connie Francis (who moves up to #4 this week). In my chart those two will have a battle also at the end of 1962 when Connie Francis will take the top spot from Cliff Richard for a week leaving the Shadows at #2.
Note: there is one more 1958 chart before the break.

I was intending to post this one on 27 July then I forgot... simply because of the title of the highest new entry.

The highest new entry is another rock 'n' roll classic ready to take over from Eddie Cochran. Sadly Big Bopper would die only a few months away in the same plane as Buddy Holly, whilst Eddie Cochran would meet his own fate a year later in a car crash.

The Big Bopper gets to #1 - ooh baby that's what I like! The highest new entry is by Elvis Presley, who has not yet had an NM #1 in 1958 and I don't think this is the song to get him there, but it will probably peak at #2. I am expecting him to get a #1 in 1958 towards the end of the year. In the UK chart he topped the chart in 1958 with "Jailhouse Rock", but in my chart that was a #1 in 1957, staying on top for 4 weeks and the last time so far he has been #1.

Jane Morgan's entry reached #1 in the UK, making her at this point the oldest living person to have had a #1 with the recent passing of Vera Lynn. Harry Belafonte holds that record on my chart with Burt Bacharach and Betty Johnson the next two after that. At present Jane Morgan is 96, Harry Belafonte 93, Burt Bacharach 92 and Betty Johnson 91 assuming her birth year was 1929. Jane Morgan has not had a #1 in my chart at this point.

Ricky Nelson had 3 songs on this playlist. The Applejacks are a US instrumental band and are not therefore the same as the band who did "Tell Me When" in 1964 (and got to #1) although Spotify lists all their music together (as they sometimes do).

The highest new entry by Lord Rockingham's XI, a UK #1, probably sold a lot particularly in Scotland but we love it south of the border too.
As the Kalin Twins get a second hit they are not going to end up "one hit wonders" on this chart.

The Big Bopper's "Chantilly Lace" is the 2nd single in a row to top the chart for 5 weeks following "Summertime Blues". The longest stay on top this year though has been 7 weeks for Chuck Berry's "Johnny B Goode".
If Lord Rockingham's XI do get to #1 next week it will be the first #1 of the year by a British act. The closest otherwise has been Marion Ryan reaching #2 with "Love Me Forever", and the last to do so was Frankie Vaughan & The Kaye Sisters with "You Gotta Have Something In The Bank" last year.

Lord Rockingham's XI, from Scotland, get to #1. This is the first UK act to reach #1 in 1958, only one did in 1957 but we had 4 #1s from UK artists in 1956, including Anne Shelton topping the chart twice, and Dave King & The Keynotes having the biggest hit of the year. The first two #1s that year were by UK acts with "Arrivederci Darling" by Anne Shelton followed by Gary Miller with the Robin Hood theme.
Elvis Presley gets the highest entry and I think he will get the next #1 but not with that song either. There's another Elvis song likely to enter next week that will be more likely to achieve this.

Crashing in at #4 this week, the Elvis Presley classic. In the UK, "One Night" became Elvis's 3rd number one following "All Shook Up" and "Jailhouse Rock". In my chart those two both reached #1 last year but he has also reached #1 with "Heartbreak Hotel", "Don't Be Cruel" and "Teddy Bear". So "One Night" may well be his 6th number one.

No change for Elvis at the top, as the highest new entry is the Platters' version of Jerome Kern's "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". The song dates back to the 1930s - but in 1958 the 1930s was not as long ago as it now feels. Jerome Kern was however no longer alive and apparently Mrs Kern wasn't that keen on this cover. (Song actually dates back to 1933, so the it's as old in 1958 as a song from 1995 is now).

Elvis still number one, there are 3 weeks of the year to go, and I hope to get the playlist for this scored up tomorrow night in time to post the chart of 13 December, then the charts of 20 December on Sunday and 27 December on Monday so I can listen to my chart of the year of 1958 on the bank holiday.
I also plan to do a big clean and tidy that day and my cleaner will help me, so I wonder what she'll think of all the old rock and roll interspersed with twee stuff like "The Little Blue Man" and "The Witchdoctor", which held the #1 and #2 spot on the same week at one point.
Then we can soon get going on 1959 which will fill the last gap here. When the other retro chart finishes 1976 I will essentially have charts covering a period, though I plan to take that into 1977 and redo it with all the US hits, so there may be some changes but basically I'll stick with what was big then so most of the #1s should still be #1.

For the first time ever the chart has a new entry at #1. Note, even the first chart did not have a new entry at #1 as I phased entries in with placeholders. The first "chart" had just 3 songs in it at #3, #9 and #19. Will I ever go back and fill in 1952-55? Not sure, I'm sure Johnnie Ray would have appreciated it, he just missed out on getting to #1 three times but Such A Night would almost certainly get him there in 1954.
In any case Johnny Mathis, who reached #2 earlier in the year with Teacher Teacher, gets a Christmas #1 18 years before he gets one in the UK. (When A Child Is Born will be in the Christmas chart in 1976 but won't be #1). This is the only "official" charting version of Winter Wonderland in the UK but Perry Como's version reached #8 in 1947 according to the British Hit Singles 1940-57 book. Guy Lombardo's version is generally recognised as one of the "original" versions but the song dates back to 1934 - so one year later than the song currently at #3 this week.
Shirley Bassey gets the second highest entry. Whilst I think it is very likely she will get the next #1, I don't think this is the song that will get her there, even though this one did get her to #1 in the UK. But she has another one coming next week which I think is so much better!.
