3 January 1959
1 ( 4 ) Kiss Me Honey Honey Kiss Me - Shirley Bassey < 1st #1 > 2 ( 1 ) Winter Wonderland - Johnny Mathis (#1[2]) 3 ( 2 ) Smoke Gets In Your Eyes - Platters (#2[2]) 4 ( 5 ) As I Love You - Shirley Bassey 5 ( 9 ) You Always Hurt The One You Love - Connie Francis
6 ( 3 ) One Night - Elvis Presley (#1[4]) 7 ( 11 ) Manhattan Spiritual - Reg Owen 8 ( -- ) (I Love To Play) My Ukulele - Max Bygraves 9 ( -- ) Baby Face - Little Richard 10 ( 12 ) Woman From Liberia - Jimmie Rodgers
11 ( 8 ) That Old Black Magic - Louis Prima (#6) 12 ( 7 ) Problems - Everly Brothers (#4) 13 ( 6 ) Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late) - Chipmunks (#6) 14 ( -- ) The Diary - Neil Sedaka 15 ( 19 ) Donna - Ritchie Valens
16 ( 18 ) My Happiness - Connie Francis 17 ( 10 ) Come On Let's Go - Tommy Steele (#2[1]) 18 ( 13 ) Whole Lotta Loving - Fats Domino (#10) 19 ( 16 ) Lonely Teardrops - Jackie Wilson (#15) 20 ( 15 ) Gotta Travel On - Billy Grammer (#13)
21 ( 25 ) 16 Candles - Crests 22 ( 20 ) Real Love - Ruby Murray (#20) 23 ( 14 ) Fallin' - Connie Francis (#6) 24 ( -- ) Goodbye Baby - Jack Scott 25 ( 17 ) High Class Baby - Cliff Richard (#7)
-- ( 21 ) Bimbombey - Jimmie Rodgers (#9) -- ( 22 ) Hoots Mon - Lord Rockingham's XI (#1[2]) -- ( 23 ) The World Outside - Four Coins (#12) -- ( 24 ) Gee But It's Lonely - Pat Boone (#17)
The first number one of 1959 is by Welsh singer Shirley Bassey, and she is also #4 this week. Scottish group Lord Rockingham's XI leave the chart having reached #1. Ruby Murray is from Northern Ireland but her hit only reached #20 and her UK #1 was before the chart era here. Englishman Max Bygraves gets the highest entry this week. This song has to be done at a ukulele cabaret sometime... but if I do I plan to change "Sweet Adeline" or whatever he sings to "Sweet Caroline" - a song that was nearly a decade away at the time of this hit. A different American singer called Neil though does make his debut this week, having already appeared in the chart as a songwriter of Connie Francis' hit "Stupid Cupid". He's just ended his career on the other side of my retro chart, in 1975.

That ukulele song climbs to #2 - although the next couple of weeks unleash two classics and then tragic events unfold regarding both those singers within a couple of weeks.

Buddy Holly gets to #1. I've marked it as his 2nd #1 but actually his only previous #1 "Oh Boy" was a Crickets song, and at this point he had separated from them and recorded a load of songs which will get rolled out over the next few years. He therefore joins (albeit he's the first) John Lennon and Freddie Mercury as people who reached #1 in my chart just before they died.
Apart from the fact I didn't know that version of the Peter Gunn theme but Duane Eddy reached my chart with it in 1960, I note an entry from Alma Cogan on the date I visited the cemetery where she is buried because my father is buried in the same cemetery as her and today is his Yahrzeit.

The day the music died. The early hours of Tuesday morning (3 February 1959), Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper were on a plane during a tour. It was a small plane so not everyone could get on it, others used the cold tour bus. Dion DiMucci was among those who was not on the plane.

And there you go, Buddy Holly gets the highest entry to have two songs in the top 3. "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" was my highest placed song of the 1950s in the number ones poll, ahead of "Diana" by Paul Anka, who also wrote the above song, and apart from them I think only Elvis Presley represented the 1950s for me. (Not sure if I listed Reet Petite which is a 50s song and was #1 for me in the 50s but was a UK #1 in the 1980s).

When I redo 1960 I now have to go all the way up to June or so as "Kookie Kookie" by Edd Byrnes and Connie Stevens has turned up in May 1959 so will have to be removed from the chart a year later. It reached #9 when I originally charted it in 1960, we'll see how it gets on in 1959. Might not get as high.
Other than songs that have already appeared in the same version (not in a different version) there will be no change in 1960 once it merges in.

Buddy Holly remains at number one, as Elvis Presley enters with 2 songs which were a double A-side in the UK. "A Fool Such As I" is a cover version, first recorded in 1953 but "I Need Your Love Tonight" is a new song (he didn't write it but he is the first to record it).
Between those we have Tommy Edwards with a song best known in the UK for Donny & Marie Osmond's rather awful cover whilst Tommy Edwards remains pretty much a one-hit wonder. He recorded this song (and It's All In The Game) in the early 50s (actually 1951 for this song).
However there is a much older song entering the chart this week "By The Light Of The Silvery Moon" was written way back in 1909. (I looked up how old this song was when it got onto my playlist, then jumped in to the "song from each year going backward" topic to post it when that topic reached 1909).

Elvis Presley takes over from Buddy Holly who has had 9 weeks at number one in total this year. Elvis Presley will have to be the king of rock and roll now, given we've lost 3 major stars.

Buddy Holly co-wrote the song that is this week's highest new entry but doesn't feature on this version, which is perhaps the Crickets "tribute" to him.
I mentioned Kookie Kookie will be removed from the 1960 charts when I replay them (they will be otherwise unchanged).
