Bobby Darin takes over #1 with Lloyd Price getting the highest entry this week and Brook Benton getting a new entry too with what was his biggest UK hit. He had very few UK hits though and lots of hits in the USA (and my chart).
Cliff Richard gets a second hit in the chart at the same time (yesterday was his 80th birthday at the time of posting) and Russ Conway's second UK #1 enters the chart too.

Bobby Darin remains at #1, but now there is a threat from Connie Francis, who has not yet had a number one single in the NM chart (although she will at the end of 1962).
In one of many chart battles between herself and Cliff Richard, this song was stuck at #3 for her with Cliff Richard at #1 with "Living Doll" and Bobby Darin (Dream Lover) at #2 between them. Last year "Stupid Cupid" by Connie Francis spent 6 weeks at #1 in the UK keeping Cliff Richard's debut "Move It" off the top. In my chart at the end of 1962 "Warm This Winter" replaced "Bachelor Boy" at #1. "Living Doll" isn't due to enter this chart until 11 July. Cliff has two other songs in the chart to keep it warm in the meantime. Of course so does Connie Francis as "Frankie" also gets an entry this week.

Two my favourite 60s singers (Heidi Bruhl, Anita Bryant) started their music careers in 1959.

At one point Connie Francis and Bobby Darin were a couple. This week she knocks him off number one. The highest entry is a Lieber & Stoller composition that was later a hit in my chart for Ray Stevens - quite suited to him as it is comic in nature and he added some silly voices to it, so a worthy chart cover.

No change at #1 and Lloyd Price goes back up to #1. Both Connie Francis and Lloyd Price are still alive, as are Paul Anka, Cliff Richard, Freddy Cannon, Dion Dimucci, Frankie Avalon, Jane Morgan, Stonewall Jackson and Gary Stites.
They were all alive at the time of this chart (having had Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens with posthumous hits a few weeks ago). The first on this list to die (of the soloists) was Johnny Horton, then Nat King Cole, Johnny Kidd and then Tommy Edwards. Preston Epps is the most recent to die, about 1 year ago.

The highest new entry is by Ray Peterson, and Elvis Presley would have a massive hit with the song 11 years later, but the song was recorded a year before by Vince Edwards but was not released as a single. Ray Peterson would also record the original of "Tell Laura I Love Her" in 1960, which was also a UK #1 in a cover version.

This is the sporting winners topic, I'll just briefly put in that Wolverhampton Wanderers won the league for the 2nd season running, but as of yet have not ever won it again since.

Cliff Richard crashes in at #4. This is one of two songs where a new version has meant you can never think of the song in its old straight way anymore, the other is "Living Next Door To Alice" - my other retro chart is still a year away from that one coming up.
In any case the song was credited to Cliff Richard & The Drifters but there is also a Drifters who enter at #18 this week and they are not his backing band... Confused, anyone?

Good and bad news for Elvis Presley this week. His song "Big Hunk O' Love" climbs up to #3, one place behind the song he'll later record himself for a massive UK hit, but his wish hasn't come true for the flip-side which is credited separately although that will be given another attempt for the next chart. I was singing "We Have A Dream.." when I was hearing it, i.e. the Scottish world cup song of 1982. Seems like B.A. Robertson may have ripped this off.
Jackie Wilson gets the highest entry, above a song by Hugo & Luigi that my mum taught us a long time ago in an attempt to help us learn some French.

Phil Phillips gets the highest new entry with the classic Sea Of Love, a song that was also a hit in the 1980s for the Honeydrippers. Ray Charles gets an entry with the classic What'd I Say.
Buddy Holly's back catalogue starts appearing now, so in spite of him dying about 6 months ago there are more of his songs to come out.

Cliff Richard remains at #1 above Jackie Wilson, who may get another #1 next week. In the UK he's only really known for 3 songs, and this isn't one of them.
The highest new entry by the Browns isn't their song, but the character of the song who experiences birth, marriage and death (with the latter maybe a long long time later) called Jimmy Brown whilst the lead singer was called Jim Brown, so that may well have been the inspiration for them to record the song. It reached #1 in the USA.
Mona Lisa was recorded by Nat King Cole as a slow song in the early 50s but both Carl Mann and Conway Twitty recorded uptempo versions in 1959 and Carl Mann wins the honours of getting his version into the chart.
Johnny Mathis scrapes in with one song, fails with the other, with Brook Benton getting an entry that is unlikely to do as well as his last single "Endlessly" which peaked at #4 and Winifred Atwell getting another tinkly piano song although Russ Conway has taken over now as the chief pianist and will be back soon.

Jackie Wilson gets his 2nd #1, although its his 3rd #1 because my 1968 chart was compiled before 1959, but it counts as his 2nd. Cliff Richard also got to #1 in 1968 (as well as 1962 and 1963). Elvis Presley did in 1969 but not 1968 (as well as 1960-62 inclusive). Sam Cooke has the highest entry and he will get to #1 in 1961 and again in 1962. Bobby Rydell will also have two #1s, in 1960 and 1963 and Ray Charles will manage it once in 1962. Buddy Holly will have a #1 in 1960. So that's the list of artists in the current chart and what years they will have number ones during the 1960s. Only Cliff Richard and Elvis Presley managed them beyond those years. (In the UK Johnny Mathis had one in 1976 but I doubt he will do so in my chart).

A new number one in the form of Santo & Johnny's instrumental. It's only the second instrumental #1 so far, Leroy Anderson's "Forgotten Dreams" being the first, in 1957. Russ Conway got to #2 with "Side Saddle", but "Sleep Walk" is a slow beat with a twangy guitar, similar to "Albatross" which was partly inspired by this tune.
Its biggest threat comes from a jolly tune with a children's chorus by Frank Sinatra. Can the king of swing finally get a chart-topper (in the second half of the 50s anyway). That enters above the Everly Brothers who are back with one of their classics.

Frank Sinatra gets to #1. He had a song on a playist near the end of 1975 that didn't get into my chart. It was also not on Spotify whereas pretty much everything else he has done is, so one of those I find inexplicable, other than it wasn't on a compilation. Maybe because it wasn't that good.
Manuel & The Music Of The Mountains (who is Geoff Love) perhaps surprisingly turns up in 1976 too on the latest playlist, and Dr Hook covering "Only Sixteen" was not selected to be added (nor was Craig Douglas's version).
Of the new entries, Poison Ivy was covered in 1980 by the Lambrettas.
