Stretching the point of this thread somewhat I guess, but this song popped into my head this morning - no prizes for guessing why - and then my MP3 player brought it up as the next-but-one-track. I thought the coincidence worth noting.

John Matthews had actually recorded dance/soul music prior to this. [snip] I was rather disappointed then obviously when he started murdering some of my #2 hits from 1978. Gerry Rafferty and Andrew Gold have both died within the last year or two. I just hope this isn't a bad omen or Gallagher & Lyle should be running scared. It's even worse than you realise - Undercover made a comeback with a version of the Only Fools & Horses theme tune for the 2006n World Cup, and John Sullivan also died earlier this year.

Now you're talking! I've been a fan of his for years - I really liked the Longpigs too. I saw him live the day after Spike Milligan died.

Final Straw is deffo the one to start with - it's a combination of their commercial side and their early slightly quirkier style. My personal favourite is still the first album, Songs For Polarbears.

Did you know Nicky Hopkins was the only session musician to have played with all four Beatles as solo artists and with the Beatles? Yeah, you probably did.

Keifer Sutherland's favourite band, apparently.
I'd also recommend Fossil Fuel as one of the all-time great singles compilations: but here's a song that isn't on it. It is on a limited edition vinyl LP available only at the Victoria & Albert Museum, funnily enough.

Do you think maybe potential buyers were distracted by the incredibly high-budget video for 'Life Begins At The Hop' there? Big faves of mine those both.

I reckon 1991 was a better year for albums than singles: not that I'm a particular fan of Nevermind or Screamadelica but I recognise their importance - and when you add in Out Of Time, Achtung Baby, Bandwagonesque, Seamonsters... not that I liked much of that stuff at the time of course.

To be fair to them, they weren't contractually able to include 'The One I Love' on their previous compilation. But this is advertised as a career-spanning retrospective so that's pretty sure to make the cut this time around.

My brother once won a book by Edward De Bono as a school prize. He said "I've seen another book that's similar but not quite as good - it's by Edward De Timbooth". After that I could never take James as seriously as they seem(ed) to take themselves.

Yeah. There's a Facebook group for POTP and the old chart shows and Ashley the presenter on Bay FM Retro chart posts there. Bet my wife he'd mention me if I asked and he did! My daughter heard it too and was gobsmacked! I hope you mean you had a bet with your wife!

I would tend to agree with Suedehead, although obviously it is a damned-if-they-do, damned-if-they-don't situation. It's not a decision I'd necessarily condone (except on musical grounds!) but I can't say I blame them for it. Also, I don't think Ike Turner quite fits in the same category, because he's dead.
But this was months ago, why is he only writing a column about it now?

Doesn't 'Suicide Alley' (which isn't on there either) predate 'New Art Riot'? In a way that's an even worse omission since Sony own the rights to it already. I notice they've also left out the secondary A-sides 'Repeat' and 'PCP' (neither of them an insufferable loss) and they've also written that version of 'Umbrella' out of history, for which they can only be applauded.
It's a pretty impressive set of singles in the right order, but I have got most of the ones I actually like already so I might be giving this one a miss.

I saw the word "unctuous" in the recipe book I was cooking from last night, and that reminded me of the only song I know with that word in it.

He he good one. Going back to the original point, just because it rhymes with maggot doesnt justify it. We all know a word that rhymes with bigger but we wouldnt accept that one But in a play about a violent racist one of the characters would be expected to use it, surely? Indeed, to return to the subject of Number 2 singles, Elvis Costello does use the rhymes-with-bigger word on 'Oliver's Army', presumably in such a context. Oh yes, I completely see that you can make a case for it - it's just that there seem to be too many people around (in the wider world, I mean, not here) who don't even think they need to, and who don't seem to understand the notion of context.

What else rhymes with "maggot"? Taggart? "Haggard" on Ronan Keating's version. I mean obviously the record is what it is and I can understand why people feel it should be left as it is now, but I do think some are too quick to dismiss the offence of that word.
