Written and composed by Motown's main production team Holland–Dozier–Holland, it became the 2nd consecutive USA number-one pop single from the Supremes' album The Supremes Sing Holland–Dozier–Holland and the group's 9th overall USA chart-topper "Love Is Here & Now You're Gone". It stalled at UK #17. Lamont Dozier claimed it was written for The Four Tops (I can totally believe it, as I can hear in my head Levi Stubbs ringing the emotion out of this, especially on the spoken bits), once Berry Gordy heard the demo, he suggested otherwise, and the rest is history.

Donovan's follow up single was "Mellow Yellow" rising up the USA charts to peak at USA #2 & peak at UK #8 early in 1967. This "easy-going, sophisticated blues number" was (according to the songwriter himself) not about smoking dried banana skins, which was believed to be a hallucinogenic drug in the 1960s, but a yellow dildo called the mellow yellow! The track features Beatle' Paul McCartney on bass guitar & background crowd noises.
