"A Design For Life" should definitely have been a No.1, in my view, luckily they got one two years later, and also the first new No.1 of the new millennium. Everything Must Go was a great album too, it was great that they finally got that deserved success from that point on. I think they said recently that they're not wanting to release singles anymore, probably because Nicky Wire was disappointed with the chart positions of their last couple of singles.
"Born Slippy" is such a memorable song for me, especially when I saw Trainspotting for the first time back then and I was playing the soundtrack a lot as a teenager, both very era-defining. :-)
Was an X-Files fan as a teen too, I think from the beginning up until David Duchovny left and Robert Patrick (he of Terminator 2) joined the show, was a surprise to see the original theme chart at No.2, used to play that tv soundtrack Songs In The Key Of X often too, the highlights on that were the Foo Fighters cover of Gary Numan's "Down In The Park" and William Burroughs narrating R.E.M's "Star Me Kitten".

Slight Return was ace and their Expecting To Fly album was and still is a great album. I also liked "Marblehead Johnson" and "If..." too. Very understated band who, like Shed Seven, didn't do very well sales wise after Britpop peaked, but still maintained a live following. They split this year but it's definitely worth rediscovering them again

I find it astonishing that The Beatles were kept off the top spot by the very person who bought the publishing rights to their back catalogue, I bet Sir Paul was well p*ssed. They still had to make do with the tied record with Elvis at the time for most UK No.1 hits.
I like Free As A Bird, such a languid song and the video is fantastic - any devoted fan will spot all the references to the Fab Four's songs. The follow up, Real Love, was good too although the original version was already heard in the opening credits of the John Lennon 1988 film Imagine.
"Father and Son" as a song is good, not that I care much for Boyzone, just that I prefer the original. And years later the tune of it would be heard again on the Flaming Lips song "Fight Test", and Cat Stevens (now as Yusuf) sued Wayne Coyne for it.

Queen song is not the best they've done but is ok. Personally, I think Brian and Roger should have just wrapped up the band after that, John Deacon retired from the music business 2 years later too. Simon Cowell should be bloody shot. Not only does he ensure that two of my fave songs ever be kept from No.1, but also, because of him some of my friends don't want to come to the pub with me on a saturday evening now, they'd rather stay in and watch X-Factor "Wonderwall" I feel is the greatest No.2 hit ever, and still sounds as good now as it did then. I also like the Ryan Adams version too, Noel went through a period of not wanting to perform the song until he heard Ryan's version that he begun to appreciate the song again. Ryan's version

I like both sides of the Pulp single, but it's "Sorted" that I like more .

"Country House" was the wrong song for that sort of battle, but the NME were the ones who hyped it all up and they wanted Blur to win that. I think personally it should really have been "The Universal" vs "Wonderwall", because those were far better songs. Blur's "Great Escape" album is my least favourite album of theirs and you could say it was the final part of their "Britpop trilogy" after "Parklife" and "Modern Life Is Rubbish", but thankfully they moved away from that and would become much more experimental as a band. "Roll With It", is the weakest song on "Morning Glory", but the album itself is definitely one of the greatest, it became massive at the school I was at, if you didn't have that album you were nothing. "Champagne Supernova" was our anthem too and even now when I hear it, the hairs still stand up and I'm instantly taken back to those times.

I love Supergrass but I must admit it did seem like "Alright" was becoming bigger than them, which was why they began to exclude it from live performances, I Should Coco was a great album, but it's what they did next that I really loved and we'll see that from the next No.2 hit that they'll have soon.
My first ever gig was Supergrass at Edinburgh's Corn Exchange in 2003 on their Life On Other Planets tour (aged 22, late bloomer but making a start) and they were just amazing live, such power. They were supported by The Raveonettes and Ed Harcourt who were also great. It was also the very gig where my first mobile phone got stolen also.
It is a shame that they split last year, and that the last thing they recorded (their Release The Drones album) hasn't been released. Was surprised to see Danny Goffey appearing on Celebrity Masterchef recently too.

Common People, such a fantastic song and such brilliant lyrics too. Jarvis is a genius. I loved Different Class and it's certainly one of the defining albums of the 90's.

I loved Set You Free at the time, but then I went off N-Trance went they started doing those awful cover versions. Speaking of cover versions, a new version of Set You Free is on the Matalan ads at the mo, but I also heard Frightened Rabbit do a nice version from 2008:

As a huge Stone Roses fan and as much as I like "Love Spreads", I share that belief that had "Ten Storey Love Song" been the comeback single, that probably would have gotten to No.1.
"The Second Coming" album, if anything, is more of a John Squire album than a Roses album, as he had written the lion's share of the songs and his interest in Led Zeppelin shows up quite often ("Tears" for instance is their answer to Stairway To Heaven). It's not a bad album, but then it's certainly not as sublime as their debut.
I was amazed at the fact that they reformed last week, and the fact that they promised new songs, it may be difficult to top that debut album but I'll be interested to see what they deliver this time round.

I have completely given up on them, their song "Paradise" is just so bad, I just want to put the first 3 albums on and pretend that their current conversion never happened.

I'm not the biggest fan of Kylie, but I like Confide In Me. Nerina Pallot does a great version of that too

"Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm", ridiculed a lot over the years and possibly the only song I know to have a chorus of just one word (or one letter) repeated through it (unless you count "Oily Water" by Blur?)

I'm stunned that Bruce Springsteen has never had a UK No.1 hit, and he came so close with that one. So beautiful and so moving.

I'm pretty blown away. I thought it was just gonna be another of those "bogus" rumours like there had been in the past but still, this is the best news I've heard all year

You don't seem to get any reggae songs in the top 40 anymore, the last reggae-sounding one I can think of was "Welcome To Jamrock" by Damian "Junior Gong" Marley, but then I stopped listening to the top 40 altogether 2 years ago.

In the same way MTV asked Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine for lyric sheets before playing their stuff in case there was anything rude in them. They used to submit any old rubbish and nobody noticed... Bet they never asked Sigur Ros either, who sang in a made-up language.
