Murray and Salisbury through to the doubles quarter-finals, Liam Broady through to the last 16 in the singles after beating Hubert Hurkacz in 3 sets. Bianca Walkden suffered a last second defeat in her taekwondo semi-final but will fight for bronze later. GB through to the men's rugby semis after coming from 21-0 down to beat the USA. Team dressage underway... Murray and Salisbury beat Krawietz and Puetz 6-2 7-6 (7-2). That pair can't have been far off the seedings. Another amazing win! I didn't actually realise that Murray's replacement in the singles, Max Purcell ranked 190, beat Felix AA in straight sets! He wasn't due to compete but got his opportunity when Alex De Minaur pulled out last week. Liam Broady won 7-5 3-6 6-3 in about 2hr 15 and was 4-1 down in the first set. Brilliant win! Both play their next matches tomorrow. Salisbury and Heather Watson didn't make it into the mixed doubles. The big shock was Naomi Osaka going out. Japan needed her to medal at the very least, but they have still got Nishikori.

DAY 4 MEDAL WINNERS GYMNASTICSTeam (W) 1. ROC2. United States3. Great BritainTRIATHLONWomen's 1. Flora Duffy (Bermuda)2. Georgia Taylor-Brown (Great Britain)3. Katie Zaferes (United States)Watched most of the triathlon live and it was quite a good watch. Deserved win by Flora Duffy making Bermuda the least populous nation to win an Olympic gold medal. A great silver medal from Georgia Taylor-Brown, who was on crutches a few months ago in the lead up to the games. All bodes well in the mixed triathlon event on Saturday.
A surprising bronze for GB in the Women team gymnastics. Even more strange that Simone Biles pulled out of the team competition after just doing 1 routine on the vault and leaving for her other teammates to complete. Not sure whether it is the weight of expectation being the poster girl for these Olympics or to save herself from embarrassment on what appears to be a poor Olympics for her that made her withdraw. I just wish her attitude wasn't so diva-ish, otherwise I might have believed she mentally wasn't there.
The face of the Olympics Naomi Osaka also lost in the 3rd round of the tennis. Women's singles draw looks wide open again and another shock winner on the cards
I see the mixed doubles draw for the tennis has been published now and no GB team. Possibly due to Watson not ranked high enough in the doubles?

VIRTUAL MEDAL TABLE PREDICTIONS
Gold: Jack Laugher & Dan Goodfellow, Men's Four
Silver: Men's 4x200m Freestyle relay
Bronze: none
Two predicted gold medals for GB on day 5, though the best chance might actually be in the freestyle relay, where GB were predicted to win silver. There's also the women's 200m IM, where Abbie Wood qualified 2nd fastest and Alicia Taylor is also in the final.
Jack Laugher is aiming to retain the synchro springboard title he won in Rio with Chris Mears, this time joined by former platform diver Dan Goodfellow.
There are six rowing finals, some of which are delayed from day 4. GB qualified 2nd fastest behind Australia in the men's Four and are aiming to win this event for the 5th Olympics in a row. GB is also in the final of the women's Four, though they had to come through a repechage to reach the final. Australia look the team to beat, while Ireland could have a chance of winning its first medal of these Games. Graeme Thomas and John Collins go in the double sculls final for GB and a medal can't be ruled out, though a top 3 finish in the quadruple sculls might be beyond the British quartet.
Joe Fraser and James Hall are in the final of the Individual All-around in gymnastics. Fraser qualified in 5th place.
Karriss Artingstall could guarantee GB's first boxing medal when she faces Australia's Skye Nicolson in her featherweight quarter-final.
In cycling both time trials take place on the road. Anna Shackley goes for GB in the women's event but isn't expected to challenge for a medal. In the men's, a fully-fit Geraint Thomas would definitely be a medal contender but after the battering his body has taken over the last month or so, it might be a bit much to expect, even with the absence of Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar. Tao Geoghagan Hart also goes for GB.
Charlotte Dujardin, Carl Hester and Lottie Fry all go in the individual dressage but it will take some effort to challenge the Germans. Any medal for Dujardin would make her the first British woman to win six Olympic medals.
The men's rugby sevens reaches its conclusion with GB facing New Zealand in the semi-finals. It'll then be either Fiji or Argentina for gold or bronze.
In tennis, Andy Murray and Joe Salisbury face Croatia's Marin Cilic and Ivan Dodig in the quarter-finals. A win would mean a guaranteed medal match. Liam Broady faces Jeremy Chardy in the last 16 of the singles.

Yep Watson not ranked high enough. Can't say I'm surprised they missed out although it has been noted that ROC have two teams involved when it's only a 16 team draw. My favourite day by far. Obviously you've got the tennis wins but amazing gold for Tom Dean breaking various records along the way and putting Maidenhead on the sporting map! And like you said a great silver for Georgia Taylor-Browne, didn't know about her injury before.

That's sad news about the mixed doubles for GB. That was actually a predicted medal on the Virtual Medal Table (I assume based on Joe Salisbury's Grand Slam performances, without really taking into account who his potential partner would be).

I presume it was predicted based on Konta partnering Salisbury maybe? Perhaps, though the VMT was published a week after Konta had already withdrawn. It could be that those who compiled the table didn't really understand the qualification rules and may have assumed Harriet Dart would be going to Tokyo to partner Salisbury or maybe even Skupski.

Three 4th places in rowing for GB. The men's Four looked like they were challenging Australia for victory but completely fell apart in the closing stages and almost ended up wiping out the Italians.

GB beaten 29-7 by New Zealand in the men's rugby semis and will play for bronze later today. Not that you'd have seen it on TV because BBC were busy showing swimming semi-finals and interviews with rowers and Eurosport were showing judo and yesterday's football.

Gold for GB in the 4x200m Freestyle relay!! Tom Dean gets his second gold of the Games and Duncan Scott adds to his silver yesterday. It's the first time since 1908 that GB has won 3 swimming gold medals at one Olympics.

It's Day 5 and that's GB's 15th medal of the 2020 Olympics. That's the same number we got in the whole of the 1996 Games in Atlanta.

Bronze for Charlotte Dujardin in Individual dressage which is a great result considering the inexperience of her new horse Gio.
He has been groomed from the start for Paris 2024.
Murray and Slaisbury lose in Tennis doubles from a set and 4-2 up.
According to the experts the only way what befell the mens's rowing four is if one of the crew blew up.
Recriminations are flying.

GB lost 17-12 to Argentina in the rugby sevens bronze medal match after what was, to be honest, a poor performance. However, the fact they came close to a medal shows what they would be capable of if they had the right funding. It was cut last year in the wake of Covid before a deal was agreed between the unions to ensure GB could send teams to Tokyo.
