So there are 4 weeks left of 1980 and I put them all onto one playlist, which came to about 46 songs, with the first of the weeks (is one) having 20 of those songs. I will consider throwing some of them back onto the playlist, so we may at least see Bow Wow Wow chart next week.
Adam & The Ants have the highest new entry this week with "Antmusic" and they were the defining act of 1981, but actually have 2 songs on the playlist. At the time I thought "Antmusic" was how they described their music because it was so different and therefore didn't fit into any normal genre, and perhaps "sounding a lot different to everything else, whilst still sounding good" was what made them so fascinating at the time.
So next in is Barry Manilow. "Lonely Together" was still in the UK chart at this point and would peak at #21 but that one flopped here, whilst "I Made It Through The Rain" only reached #37 in the UK, but was also a #10 hit in the USA so they agree with me this was a far better song. Originally written and recorded by Gerard Kenny with different lyrics, mostly about trying to break through as a musician, but Barry Manilow had them changed and actually I think it's the lyrics that is what is so great about this song, as it's about getting through hard times and making it to the other end.
Eddie Rabbitt's single reached #1 in the USA, battling it at the top for 4 weeks with another country song which will enter next week.
Queen's "Flash" was from the Flash Gordon movie and contained snippets of quotes, the most memorable (and rather corny) being "Flash, Flash I love you, but we only have 14 hours to save the earth!". One to go in the file along with Des'Ree's "toast" lyric.
Maybe add to that list also Bad Manners' "So I bought her lots of things, diamond ring, brand new bed" which they even laughed at themselves with one of the members questioning him. Having said that, a few months before I got married we also bought a brand new bed.
So many Haven Factor acts entering this week, and two of them on the playlist got
Whitneyfan into trouble (both coming up).
