This is the first time I've ever listened to Double Fantasy. Really he'd have been best off leaving Yoko off the singing. The album is fine when it's just John singing.

* means it crossed over from 1979 ** means it was in the last chart of 1980, but some (like Ace Of Spades) have dropped quite far and are unlikely to add much to their totals whilst others (like Antmusic) are very likely to. Madness have the top single of the year and the best second-placed single, although when we roll into 1981 we may find Jona Lewie's "Stop The Cavalry" will surpass his other hit which sits once place above the second hit of Madness. It's not likely to catch "Baggy Trousers" though. Having listened to the whole top 150 and also in random rotation, it's a pretty strong list. I mean "Coming Up" and "Start" right at the bottom - that shows the overall standard. The following songs on the list were considerably older than 1980 but were hits in this year. It is considered for the list if the artist has released a new album since the one this came from, thus Bob Marley is included. Elvis Presley - It's Only Love (1971) AC/DC - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (1977) Bob Marley & The Wailers - Three Little Birds (1977) Police - So Lonely (1978) The year I have given is either when it was recorded or first on an album or first released as a single (but flopped). Another song that would have been included in that list is M*A*S*H - Theme From MASH (Suicide is Painless) (1970) but it isn't in the top 150. (It is actually quite a long way short, at #204).

I'm going to post the top 30 acts of the year. This is based on points, and where artists are credited together the points are given to both, so "Xanadu" contributes to the points totals of both Olivia Newton John and Electric Light Orchestra, full points for both.
But I haven't combined the Jacksons into Michael Jackson's total, nor does Kate Bush's uncredited vocals on "Games Without Frontiers" count towards her total. (I will say later where they would finish if we counted those). In 1981 similarly Phil Collins and Genesis won't combine.
30 Motorhead. 1 hit, "Ace Of Spades". They also had "Dead Men Tell No Tales" (from an EP) plus an EP of old tracks but neither charted. 29 Lipps Inc. 1 hit, "Funkytown". 28 Diana Ross, 4 hits, biggest "My Old Piano". 27 Boomtown Rats, 3 hits, biggest "Someone's Lookin' At You". (Diamond Smiles was in the chart as the year started, having reached #1 in 1979) 26 Olivia Newton John, 3 hits (one with ELO and one with Cliff Richard). Biggest hit "Magic". 25 Christopher Cross, 3 hits, biggest "Ride Like The Wind" 24 Hazel O'Connor, 2 hits, biggest "Eighth Day" 23 Police, 5 hits (including Walking On The Moon crossing over into the year, and De Do Do Do De Da Da Da still in the chart at the end). Biggest "Don't Stand So Close To Me". 22 Michael Jackson, 4 hits (with 2 crossing into the year). Biggest "She's Out Of My Life". 21 Electric Light Orchestra, 4 hits, biggest "Xanadu". Note that Olivia Newton John's "Magic" was therefore a bigger hit but they had more hits and overall were more successful. 20 Cliff Richard, 3 hits, biggest "Carrie". 19 Specials, 4 hits, biggest "Too Much Too Young" (Do Nothing still in the chart at year end)) 18 Clash, 3 hits, biggest "London Calling" 17 Frank Sinatra, 1 hit "Theme From New York New York" 16 John Lennon, 1 hit "(Just Like) Starting Over"

Madness actually won by a landslide, 45% higher total than Blondie.
Kate Bush also among the leaders as well as one of the leaders in 1978, Elvis Costello was among the leaders in 1979 (#34 this year, his biggest hit "New Amsterdam" which was a reserve choice for me to use in Haven Factor). Stevie Wonder is all the way down at #82 and the Rolling Stones a lot further down, but they'd have been higher in earlier years (the Rolling Stones probably 2nd in 1965 behind the Beatles, I'd have to add it up). I'm expecting Stevie Wonder to be in the top 20 in 1981, with 3 hits, one of which will be massive.
Emotional Rescue finished #251 in the chart of the year. However "Army Dreamers", which got Kate Bush into a sing-off, was #27.

"Suddenly" is my second favourite Cliff duet, only behind "The Wedding" (I Do Not Love You Isabella).
