I have a new gig James Editors Maximo Park The Pigeon Detectives Pale Blue Eyes Kairos I was at this last night, taking a roadtrip from Glasgow to Darlo, and honestly it was one of the best days of live music I’ve ever seen. James for me are probably the greatest live band around now

We were very lucky with the weather - we’ve been at a couple of outdoor gigs this summer where we’ve been deluged with rain. Definitely not fun. Got a good insight into Darlo on the lengthy wait for taxis after 😆

I've seen James 3 times at festivals and they never disappoint.

I'll definitely go see them somewhere, Nottingham is way too far for me though probably be London. In other news I'm this close to buying a day ticket for ArcTanGent tomorrow... Svalbard, Empire State B astard, Pigs x7 and Brutus are all playing... really want to go but I'm scared of going to a festival on my own 😅

Never been to Nottingham I don't think - I will have to fix that at some point though not sure if mid-December is the best time. Managed to grab a very cheap ticket for ArcTanGent tonight so will report back later

ArcTanGent yesterday! A smallish festival near Bristol that specialises in rock and metal, especially anything of the 'post-' variety. I've had this on my radar since last year but wasn't able to go then, and almost missed this year's too until finding a cheap resale ticket for just the Thursday. Arrived late and had to leave early due to needing to get home on a work night but got to see all 3 of the bands I was most hoping to catch Svalbard - female-fronted, black metal-influenced post-hardcore trio from Bristol. I've had my eye on this band for a while as they hit that 'savage vocals but melodic instrumentals' sweet spot, but their previous material has always fallen short for me. Their next album is out in October and on the face of the three singles, it will be their best so far. Energetic and engaging live performance, too. Next up were two bands I was vaguely interested in - Cave In and Chat Pile, though I was really hungry so I heard most of their sets while sat in a field eating Both sounded pretty good from what I heard; I need to check out Cave In's most recent album. Chat Pile aren't entirely for me I think though I really like 'Cut' from their split EP with Nerver earlier this year. Parachute For Gordo - I'd not heard of these; they are billed as a 'blissfully noisy math-punk-post-rock noise from Aldershot trio', whatever that means. Mostly instrumental from what I could tell. Just OK, not really for me, but caught a bit of their set while taking a break from Chat Pile. Empire State Bastard - familiar to a few people here as the metal side project of Biffy Clyro frontman Simon Neil, this technical 'supergroup' also features a certain Dave Lombardo on drums for their live performances This was probably the best set I saw in terms of convincing me of a band I was sort of on the fence with - the singles just sounded so much better live, and the unreleased material was a lot more diverse and intriguing than I was expecting. Simon is always a blast live and they really stole the show for me. Their debut album comes out next month and they're touring in November; I am tempted to go see them again although my ears probably wouldn't thank me. A couple of shots of ESB's set (yes, I was standing a long way back!): Sadly I had to leave before 'The Looming' which is my favourite of their 3 singles, so that I could make it in good time for... Brutus - again, you'll all be familiar with this band by now Easily my most-anticipated set and probably the reason I decided to go as I adore this band and still hadn't seen them live. Another great performance, taking in most of the singles from 'Unison Life' and a couple of album tracks as well as some highlights from past releases. If you think Stefanie sounds great on record, you need to hear them live - her voice is just incredible. Again tempted to see them again when they tour in December but I don't think the dates line up with my holiday plans. Pigs x7 were on after Brutus, but it was a 2-hour drive back for me so alas I had to leave without even a single Pig. Overall really glad I went and will try and go again next year, hopefully for the full thing depending on the line-up. The biggest win for me, though? I remembered to wear earplugs this time and my ears are totally fine

Sounds like you had fun, I love Cave In, they have such an interesting history, their debut album and first few EPs were just pure metalcore screaming which I didn't care for but their next album "Jupiter" was a decent prog rock album with the title track being the stand out track but then from nowhere they release "Antenna" one of the best commercial rock records of the 00s, "Stained Silver", "Anchor", "Inspire", "Joy Opposites", "Lost In The Air", "Penny Racer". It was an album the Foo Fighters would've been proud of at their peak.
They weren't happy with their softer sound so went for a hybrid alternative metal/rock for their next album "Perfect Pitch Black", which had some great songs on it like "Tension In The Ranks", "Trepanning" before going on hiatus
They came back years later with a banger of an EP called Planets of Old which featured Retina Sees Rewind
From their new album "Reckoning" was my favourite by a long way, I'm not a massive fan when they get too heavy but this one was a bit Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

yeah I think I'd mostly only heard their metalcore stuff before which was why I wasn't so bothered about seeing them! I should have timed my lunchbreak better From what I did hear they sounded good though. I will add them to my list to investigate further. I do know 'Reckoning' as well actually, they definitely played that.

Not really a conventional gig but have just booked to see Ash at Bristol Rough Trade on the 19th of September, it's a Q&A, signing and acoustic set and includes a copy of the new album. Only cost £14 which is about what the album would've been on its own on CD, and I figure since I was going to buy it anyway might as well

Already bought my ticket for ArcTanGent 2024 as they were doing a 30% off offer it's their 10-year anniversary as well so should be a good one. Also eyeing up PÆRISH who are playing a few UK dates in October including London on the 1st

Just back from Ash's acoustic gig + Q&A in Bristol! Got to meet the band and have them sign my CD too They only played 6 songs but it was a great night, and considering you got all that plus the CD for £14 it was pretty insane value for money
